12 best raid enclosures
These enclosures are designed to provide data storage, backup, and fault tolerance for both personal and professional use. Here's what you should know about RAID enclosures:
Common RAID levels include RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10, and more. Each RAID level offers a different balance of performance, capacity, and redundancy.
RAID levels like RAID 1 and RAID 5 achieve this through mirroring or parity data.
This is particularly useful for users who require additional storage space over time.
This can be beneficial for tasks that require high data throughput, such as video editing.
Regular backups can be scheduled to ensure that data remains safe even in case of drive failure.
This minimizes downtime and is crucial for businesses that require continuous operation.
The choice of interface affects data transfer speeds.
Hardware RAID controllers often offer better performance and reliability.
Ensure that the enclosure you choose supports your preferred operating system.
Some RAID levels allow for easier data recovery than others.
The choice of RAID level and enclosure features depends on your specific storage needs and use cases, whether for data backup, capacity expansion, or enhanced data performance.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you practically start with one drive and add more later? Would you still be able to keep the contents on the one drive when you add another one |
Answer: | If it's set to RAID 0 Spanning (JBOD), yes. You can add more drives to that and not have to format. |
Question: | Can this device be hooked up directly to a Router instead of a PC |
Answer: | No This is not a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device, unless your router has a USB Port for external storage this will not work. |
Question: | Anyone has tested this unit with 6 TB hard drives |
Answer: | Yes, I have one built with 4x6TB WD RED drives in an 18TB RAID-5 volume. I was able to format it with GPT, NTFS. I tested copying files, and I ran a chkdsk /r to test the free space. Everything looks good so far. I am going to be using it soon to fill with data. |
Question: | Amazon has 2 boxes from this manufacturer. The HFR2-SU3S2 ProRaid ,, and the HFR2-SU3S2 drive enclosure. WHATS THE DIFFERENCE |
Answer: | The HFR2-SU3S2 drive enclosure is just an inclosure for consolidating your hard drives or for running something like Windows Home Server (WHS). If you are trying to run a raid configuration then you will want the ProRaid version. I wanted something to run a raid 5 config and got the ProRaid. It was just a matter of dropping in the hard drives and doing the initial format for file type. The box includes all the software to run everything in the raid configuration that you want. I have had it for about a year now and have drug it around the world with me and have never had any problems with it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What hardware raid modes are supported on the multibay models |
Answer: | Actually, it depends on the model. Some have no hardware RAID and others support RAID 0 / 1 / 3 / 5 / 10 / JBOD/ CLONE Raid array modes. |
Question: | Can it be powered with a regular 5V wall adapter |
Answer: | 1. No it cannot it's a 12v4A device so 5v is cannot power this enclosure |
Question: | The 5 bay usb c version says its usb 3.1 but the transfer speed of 5gbs. 3.1 is 10gps. is just an error in the description |
Answer: | You realize that no sata drive especially 3.5 inch drive can even Saturate USB 3.1 gen 1 5 Gb, so why are you wanting/bitching about more bandwidth that you cannot use. |
Question: | At unit the model you can set raid. can i set raid 5 start with 3 drives & later expand/grow array size by adding drive #4 and #5 without losing data |
Answer: | I tried that by starting with 4 drives and then adding a 5th. The 5th drive didn't get used until I reinitialized the array (losing the data). I don't know if a drive can be replaced with a bigger drive to grow the array over time. TL; DR: No, you have to build the array with the number of drives. |

User questions & answers
Question: | In raid 1 mode can one hard drives be removed and is readable on another computer without an qnap enclosure |
Answer: | Qnap formats by default to ex4. It will read and write to ntfs drives, but have never attempted to set up a ntfs raid. If your other computer runs Linux there's a good chance a two disk raid 1 would be readable. |
Question: | Replaced 4x2tb drives with 4x 4 tb drives one by one while in raid 5, i expected the tr004 to recognize extra space on last replacement. not. so how |
Answer: | RAID does not work like that. When you create an ARRAY, the configuration is written to a configuration file that is either stored on the drives/array or whatever software RAID file you are using. Even in Enterprise Storage, this is how it works. Swapping out to a larger drive will not increase your disk space. You would need to backup your data, then wipe and create a new ARRAY. |
Question: | Can i put my existing hdd (with files) from my pc to this das |
Answer: | Hi Myk, No, the DAS will reformat the drives. Thanks! |
Question: | Can i set this up for raid 1 with 2 drives and jbod/single with the other 2 drives |
Answer: | I think the question is implying can you set this unit up with two concurrent RAID volumes. A) A RAID 1 set with drives in slot 1 & 2 and concurrently B) a JBOD set with drives in slot 3 & 4. Based on DIP switches, no. It would need multiple sets of dip switches to accomplish this and it appears there is only one set of switches on the chassis. By software, it is a possibility if the management software is slick enough to support this. It would come down to what QNAP provided in the software management console. As I don't have one of these yet, I can't confirm. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone converted their old ps4 hdd using this |
Answer: | I just upgraded my ps4 hd to a 2tb and used this device to turn my original 500gig into an external for my WiiUWorked like a charm |
Question: | Can this be powered by sata port |
Answer: | Thanks for asking. This 2.5" drive enclosure (NST-266SU3-BK) has two external interfaces, eSATA or USB 3.0. If you are using USB 3.0 connection, the USB 3.0 cable will provide power to the drive, this called Bus-powered. If you are using eSATA, it comes with eSATA cable and a power cable to connect and get power via USB port. Here is a link to the QIG that shows the connection in step6 and step7. https://www.vantecusa.com/CKEdit/images/files/nst-266su3_qig_copy.pdf This is not an eSATAp device. |
Question: | How many GB does it have |
Answer: | To make sure what the topic is here, my comments are just about the Vantec enclosure and not about whatever drive + enclosure Vantec may sell. My drive, for what it's worth, though, and it doesn't matter, was a 225 GB HP drive pulled out of motherboard-fried HP laptop. I wanted to keep it because there was nothing wrong with it to hook as an external USB drive to either my desktop or a tablet. |
Question: | Does this fit a 7mm, 9mm, or 12mm (or all three) thickness types of 2.5 drives |
Answer: | Yes 2.5” drives like SATA ssd’s and laptop-size hard drive in all three thicknesses for the form factor. Example: Seagate Firecuda SSHD works great. RAID0 on XBOX ONE X! (2TB x2 Drives). |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am considering this enclosure to set up two 6 tb hard drives on raid 1. which would you recommend: western digital black, blue or red drives |
Answer: | All versions should work paired in the enclosure, but are rated for different applications. Black is the higher performance drive: Video work and higher access speeds at 7200rpm. Red is for long life in constant "trickle" streaming as in security, or for building a NAS, at 5400rpm. Blue is for general "consumer" storage applications at 5400rpm. There is also a Purple that is specified for security video use, but I usually use Reds for that application due to availability. |
Question: | If one drive fails, is it as easy as just pulling the failed drive and adding a new one if configured in Raid |
Answer: | Yes - though pulling involves powering the unit down and disassembling it, especially if the failed drive is in bay #1. It no longer matters which bay the new drive is in - the unit will rebuild to the empty drive. This is a huge improvement from their older RAID units where the good drive had to be in bay 1 because it copied from bay 1 to bay 2 no matter regardless of which was the empty drive. |
Question: | In raid 1, if one drive fail and after the failed drive is replaced, can this enclosure rebuild its raid 1 without being connected to the pc |
Answer: | Hello. This enclosure would need to be connected to a computer in order to properly power on and rebuild the RAID after a failure. |
Question: | Does this enclosure work with ssd (solid state drives |
Answer: | Hello! Yes this enclosure will work with SSD's. However they will not fit in the drive bays without the use of a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter Bracket. We recommend the Newertech Adaptadrive (found here: http://a.co/8beqOas) for situations like this. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it fit a 15mm drive? Some reviews say Yes, some others say No |
Answer: | Yes, it does. I am using a 5TB HDD. |
Question: | Will it suits the new 5tb 2.5" hdd |
Answer: | I am using Seagate 5TB 2.5" HDD, with 15mm of height, and so far it works -- I use it for Mac backup. However, the enclosed robber does not fit the 15mm height of the HDD, and it looks like the metal touches the HDD circle board if you install without the rubber. So I added plastic washer for each screw to prevent the short circuit. FYI. |
Question: | I have raid 1 selected, have 2 4tb wd red drives in the encolsure. mac os initialized the drives but it see 8tb. should it only see 4tb being raid |
Answer: | Something is certainly wrong. 2 X 4TB in raid one should show up as a single 4TB drive as raid 1 is simply mirrored data from one to the other. If you are seeing the two drives as 8TB total, something is wrong with your raid settings, not set to raid 1 or the unit is defective. |
Question: | Does this device spin the drives down when not in use |
Answer: | The device will enter dormant state after 10 minutes unused. |

User questions & answers
Question: | has anyone tried putting a 2.5" 1 TB HDD in this thing? Do I have to use an 3.5" adapter or can I just plug in the 2.5" HDD |
Answer: | Note: A Normal adapter/brace will not work that you would used for mounting a 2.5 in a PC case. The connections for the power and data transfer are fixed solid to the board in the back of the case. A normal adapter will leave the 2.5 drive well short of the connections and you will need to run cabled for the power and data, very very short cables. Additionally, the metal plate that functions to hold the drives in place will not fit snugly with the 2.5 drive adapter meaning it will float around in there just a little to make some noise. Due to these reasons I would suggest only using it for 3.5 drives as they fit perfectly in the drive bays. |
Question: | If I install 4 x 4TB drives on this unit and connect it to my computer, I see 4 new USB hdds in my PC or just one big drive |
Answer: | You will see 4 separate drives, but if you want, you can use the RAID option that is built into windows 10 (assuming you have windows 10) and you can merge disks together, I have four 4TB drives in mine, two of them run on RAID 1 where I keep important files, and the other two drives are set up as single drives and that's where I got all my games installed and stuff I wouldn't mind losing, all the drives work great so far in any configuration I try. |
Question: | Is there any way to make these units turn on after a power fail w/o pressing the button? I tried the 3 sync modes and regardless of what the attached server does it seems I have to manually press the power on button to get these to start responding after a power failure (USB |
Answer: | A comment to Abi and Phillip on chaining UPS units: I think the issue is total current draw, and usually if someone is adding another UPS, they plan to draw that much more current through the system, and that would indeed be bad. In general, it is good advice not to chain UPS or surge power strips, given how people normally just keeping plugging things in until all outlets are occupied. But... if Abi is disciplined and only plugs the one thing into that chained UPS that otherwise would occupy a plug on the first UPS, I'm not seeing the problem. Maybe Abi should tape over or toddler-plug the remaining outlets on the chained UPS as a reminder to avoid dangerous current draw situations? The total load on the first UPS then is almost unchanged (modulo the power overhead of the chained UPS itself), and if there is some reserve capacity on the first UPS, that shouldn't be a problem. Is there some other consideration I am missing here? |
