11 best raid controller with cables

Here's what you need to know about RAID controllers and their associated cables:

  1. RAID arrays are configurations of multiple hard drives or SSDs that work together to provide enhanced storage performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both.
  2. RAID 1: Mirroring for data redundancy.
  3. RAID 5: Striping with parity for a balance of performance and redundancy.
  4. RAID 10: Combines mirroring and striping for both performance and redundancy.
  5. Common cable types include SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) cables, SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) cables, or even specialized backplane cables for certain server setups.
  6. SAS cables, for example, are often used in enterprise environments for their high-speed data transfer capabilities.
  7. These controller cards often come with multiple connectors for attaching multiple drives.
  8. You can choose the RAID level, set up hot spares, and monitor the health of the array using these tools.

The choice of RAID level and cables depends on the specific requirements of your storage setup, whether it's for performance, redundancy, or a combination of both.

Below you can find our editor's choice of the best raid controller with cables on the market

User questions & answers

Question: Where's the manual
Answer: My wife has a kindle fire with a USB-C port, and because the wifi in our home stinks has used it there. It's a good network adapter going from a wireline USB-C port in the bottom of the fire to a wireline Gigabit Ethernet port. Beyond that you're going beyond what it's built to do.
Question: Is there a download link for the drivers? My optical isn't reading the disk
Answer: I'll depend both on the hardware capabilities and the firmware. Might have to try it.
Question: Has anyone tried this card, or any other pci sata controller with vmware esxi version
Answer: I have a 2017 macbook pro 13". If the first one you get works it is just plug and play. Amazon was great about sending a replacement (that works fine)
Question: Does this card support linux or freebsd? debian in particular if it is linux. thank you
Answer: Yes

User questions & answers

Question: Will the is work on a R710 H700 controller with 2.5" disks
Answer: Yes. The R710 comes in many different configurations with 2.5 drive caddies or 3.5 drive caddies. You can use 2.5 drives in a 3.5 drive caddy with a 2.5 to 3.5 enclosure adapter. These adapters can be sourced easily on eBay or Amazon. These cables are long and they are long enough to go all the way from the rear of the case to the front right side of the case where the 2.5 drives are located.
Question: Will these cables fit H700 on my R
Answer: Unlike a couple of reviews I saw here, I want to confirm these cables DO indeed fit perfectly in the 1U R610 Server. The connectors that attach to the backplane are precisely the same height as the original cables and are the perfect length to reach my new H700 RAID in the embedded slot where the original PERC 6/i resided.
Question: I have a dell r720xd with 12x lff (3.5 inch drives). which version of this cable should i buy - the right angle or left angle? should i 3 pk
Answer: Dear Customer, You should choose the right angle version. If you purchase the 2-pack, you will get two cables. Any further question, please feel free to contact us. Thanks!
Question: Could someone clarify the difference between right angle and left angle cables? Which server uses what angle cables? Thanks
Answer: Just went through this with an R720xd. If you are moving to an LSI HBA card use either one right and one left or two lefts to get to either of the full height slots. If you use the two drive backplane on the rear remove the SASA1 jumper cable to it, then take the onboard SASA to the rear backplane directly (cable is long enough). Tuck SASB somewhere since you can't disconnect it. This gets you on board hardware RAID1 for the boot drives and a nice 24bay direct SAS enclosure for storage spaces.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i insert this card in a pcie 4.0 x16 slot that runs in x4 mode (due to the motherboard configuration) and run it at the full supported speed
Answer: First I booted up with the empty card. after windows installed it, I shut my computer down and pluged in my ssd drive. then started up in cmos, to see if it was their, it was. Every thing booted fine. So i ran a speed test and found that it ran 60% slower than my 1.5 onboard sata. Even though it showed as a 6g it does not have the speed. So i now use it for my cd rom. I there is some settings i missed, sure would like to know.
Question: Does it come with bracket
Answer: Sorry, the two slots are NOT standard USB slots. Although, they may look similar they are not. They are both eSATA ports, a kind of USB hybrid. Used to connect external drives. They are faster than USB or the older fire-wire. Look for an external hard drive that uses eSATA. For speed, eSATA is a huge jump over USB. It can be as fast as adding a hard drive straight into your computer.
Question: Will this work on Linux
Answer: Updating this answer for modern motherboard and more modern kernels. No, it is not plug-and-play. This card does not support AHCI specification 1.3.1, finalized in 2014, which means it will not work with most modern motherboards, or at least fully. WIth Linux, there is a sort of work-around though, you can set iommu=soft on the grub line (/etc/defaults/grub on Ubuntu and Debian-based). iommu=soft tells the kernel to ignore some of the ATA errors that result due to the failed AHCI commands. Still, if you want a fully working card in modern Linux and hardware, this is not it. Look at LSI.
Question: Any cache on this card
Answer: I contacted startech & they said it will work with up to 6 drives per port with multiport external bays. SO a a total of 12 drivers per card will work. They said they have tested & has been verified. I have 2 mediasonic non raid bays i will try to see if it works when i get the card

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with sas drives
Answer: Very likely. I installed it in a 1U.
Question: I have 2 x wd 10tb sas disk, can i use this pci on pc as data disk
Answer: From the firmware of the card (Ctrl + C) at boot up, you can setup RAID 0, 1, 1E, 10. If you download the "MegaRAID storage manage", you can setup RAID 5. With Windows 8 and 10 you can setup RAID 5 using the built-in Disk Management of windows as well. I use this card with 6 x (3TB SAS 6Gbs HDDs) in a RAID 0 for gaming. For me this has been the best option as SSD for the amount of space I need is to costly. With Gaming you want to stay away from software RAID, as you want all your CPU clocks to work on your game.
Question: Using Windows 10, can I use for a boot drive
Answer: Hi, Yes you can. I believe you can backplane and backplane again.Hope this helps. I run 3 spindals, 2 solid state hybrids, and 2 solidstates. Have a good oneJim
Question: Only half of my drives show up. one sas connector appears to be dead. is there a bios i can access
Answer: The number of ports is the actual number of physical connections on the card. Each of the SAS SFF connectors has four SAS/SATA capable connections and you can buy a fan out cable that will allow you directly to connect 8 physical drives to the card - four drives on each of the two SAS ports. However, you can also get an interface known as an SAS expander. An expander will have one or two SAS input connectors and multiple SAS connectors for output. You can plug those into the card and control many more drives. For example, if you had one of these cards and two expanders which each had one input and four outputs, you could plug one expander into each of the SAS ports on the card and that would give you 8 SAS connectors and you could plug 4 drives into each SAS port on the expander using the same type of cable that would allow you to connect four drives directly to each port on the card. You can plug expanders into expanders too to support more and more drives. The quoted maximum number of drives just tells you how many physical SAS or SATA drives you can plug in if you have lots and lots of expanders.
