Answer:	I don't have the 5-port. I do have the 3-port from Cable Matters and I know that their customer service is exceptional. When my remote failed shortly after purchase they replaced it almost with "No Questions Asked". The only thing I had to provide them was the order number. It was done through email with no return required by me.

Answer:	TL/DR: 1. It needs power. 2. always. LONG version: the unit needs power to function properly hence why it comes with a power cord, BUT the HDMI standard has 5v out on devices outputting video and this device takes advantage of that. Some devices (like cameras with HDMI out) are not required to output the 5v thats why its "optional" sometimes its needed sometimes its not

Answer:	I wanted to comment on this question because I based my purchase on the answer from Cable Matters which is misleading. I could not get the "auto switch when turned on" feature to work as the answer says. I asked Cable Matters and below is their response. This feature may or may not work with your equipment. In my experience I tried with two different bluray players, PS3, PS4. The only one that would switch over when turned on (most of the time anyway) was the PS4 if you turned hdmi control on.
