Answer:	I have a Dell Alienware M17 laptop and it works perfectly with that. It is a mini display port adapter which is ALSO compatible with the Mac Thunderbolt stuff. The mini display port on the Dell XPS 12 is the same as the one on my Alienware so you should be good to go. A note though, I had to restart my computer with it plugged in before it worked the first time.

Answer:	This will not help with that setup. This allows you to get video from a device with a display port connection to a device with an HDMI connection. It has nothing to do with USB. You would need a different connector to get video to your tv.. Cable Matters makes a USB 3.0/2.0 to HDMI/DVI connector. You should check that out.

Answer:	In the context of adapters between different video technologies:1) An ACTIVE adapter means it converts the signal being output (in this case DisplayPort) into HDMI. The active adapter will have either some sort of converter chip/electronics in order to do this conversion. As part of this conversion, (and in this context) the active adapter will generate the correct HDMI output clock corresponding to the DisplayPort input signal.2) A PASSIVE adapter implies it is simply a cable that is wired correctly to go from (in this case) DisplayPort to HDMI. The video card in a laptop/PC must be able to detect and negotiate the correct mode to the input device (e.g. monitor, HDTV) via the response (EDID) it receives from the device.
