3 best mics
Microphones are transducer devices that convert sound waves into electrical signals. They are commonly used in various applications, including computer peripherals, audio recording, video conferencing, and more. Here are some key points about microphones in the context of computer accessories:
Types of Microphones:
- Condenser Microphones: These are sensitive and provide high-quality audio. They require power (often through USB) and are commonly used in professional settings for studio recording and broadcasting.
- Dynamic Microphones: These are rugged and less sensitive, making them ideal for stage performances and live sound applications.
- USB Microphones: USB microphones are popular for computer use. They connect directly to a computer via USB, eliminating the need for external audio interfaces.
Polar Patterns:
- Microphones have different polar patterns that determine their sensitivity to sounds from different directions.Common patterns include:
- Cardioid: Picks up sound mainly from the front and rejects noise from the sides and rear.
- Omnidirectional: Picks up sound equally from all directions.
- Bi-directional (Figure-8): Captures sound from the front and back while rejecting noise from the sides.
- Microphones have different polar patterns that determine their sensitivity to sounds from different directions.Common patterns include:
Applications:
- Voice Recording: Computer microphones are often used for voice recording, podcasting, and voice-over work.
- Video Conferencing: Integrated microphones in webcams or external USB microphones improve audio quality during online meetings.
- Gaming: Gamers often use dedicated microphones for clear communication while gaming online.
Accessories:
- Microphone accessories include pop filters to reduce plosive sounds, shock mounts to reduce vibrations, and foam windscreens to minimize wind noise.
- Some microphones come with adjustable stands or desk mounts for convenient placement.
Compatibility:
- When purchasing a microphone, it's essential to check its compatibility with your computer's operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux) and any specific software you plan to use.
Price Range:
- Microphones vary in price from budget-friendly options to high-end studio-grade microphones, catering to a wide range of users.
Maintenance:
- To ensure the longevity of your microphone, it's important to keep it clean and handle it carefully.
Remember that the choice of microphone depends on your specific needs, whether it's for professional audio recording, gaming, or video conferencing. Selecting the right microphone and accessories can greatly enhance your audio experience when using your computer.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this amplify the voice if it is not plugged into an amp. I was hoping to be able to plug into an iTouch or laptop |
Answer: | It does not need a battery, but you do need to connect it to an amplifier that has a mic XLR connection. Mostly this would be a separate pre-amp which is then connected to a larger console or amplifier system, though some systems combines both. |
Question: | do u need a wire to use this |
Answer: | If the official Shure part number SM58-CN is selected, the "CN" means a 25' XLR microphone cable will be included. Other variants include SM58S which is microphone with an on/off switch, SM58-LC which is microphone only with no cable. |
Question: | Would this be okay for a 6 yr old? She loves singing and wants a microphone for her birthday |
Answer: | There are too many questions to be answered here. Are your speakers powered or non-active? How many mics are you running? Any other systems involved, like instruments, computers, ipods etc? Are you looking for built in EFX? Although my first amp was a Pyle 3000W for $100 and I used a cheap Behringer 4 bus mixer, I have moved on from that purchase. Best advise I can give someone, is to buy a book or video on live sound and mixing, it will save you time, heartaches and maybe even money. |
Question: | does it work with a computer |
Answer: | I'd like to correct a statement that's been made about the SM-58, which is the most popular, universal "performer's mic," found in every band that can afford it and serving as the White House microphone for heads of state. It's a "dynamic" rather than a "condenser mic," which means it's durable, tough, long-lasting, made to take abuse. But it's not the preferred microphone in the recording studio, which is where the more sensitive, nuanced condenser microphone shines (but don't toss it in a bag and "take it on the road"). Condenser mics require more power than dynamic mics, and that power is called "phantom power," which is found in most mixing boards and in many amps--and in this handy adapter. But you do NOT require Phantom Power for an XLR connection: you require it for a CONDENSER MIC. And since the popular SM58 is a DYNAMIC MIC, the Phantom Power is wasted, a needless add-on. If you want to convert your XLR to USB (or to a phone plug), there are many adapters and cables for $10 that will do the trick You certainly don't need to invest a hundred in the pictured adapter--that's sheer "overkill. It's a bit of a mystery why sellers are showing the SM58 with a Phantom-Powered Adapter for condenser mics. You may be wasting $100 on one or the other of these incompatible devices. |
