10 best car speaker bass blockers

Car speaker bass blockers, also known as bass blockers or high-pass filters, are electronic components used in car audio systems to limit the lower frequency signals (bass) that are sent to certain speakers. These devices are designed to prevent low-frequency sounds from being played through speakers that cannot handle deep bass frequencies, such as small or factory-installed speakers. Here's what you need to know about car speaker bass blockers:

  1. Purpose: Bass blockers are used to protect smaller speakers, such as tweeters and mid-range speakers, from receiving low-frequency signals that they are not designed to handle. These speakers can easily become damaged or distorted when playing deep bass sounds.

  2. Frequency Cutoff: Bass blockers have a specific frequency cutoff point, often set between 200Hz and 500Hz. This means they allow higher-frequency audio signals to pass through to the speakers while blocking or attenuating lower frequencies below the set point.

  3. Components: Bass blockers typically consist of capacitors and resistors. The capacitor allows higher frequencies to pass through while blocking lower frequencies. The resistor may be included to fine-tune the cutoff frequency and match the impedance of the speaker.

  4. Installation: Bass blockers are usually installed in-line with the speaker's wiring. They can be connected between the amplifier/receiver output and the speaker input. This simple installation helps prevent excessive bass from reaching the speaker.

  5. Speaker Compatibility: Bass blockers are particularly useful when you have small or factory-installed speakers that lack the ability to reproduce deep bass frequencies accurately. Larger, dedicated subwoofers are better suited for handling low-frequency signals.

  6. Improved Sound Quality: Using bass blockers can help improve the overall sound quality of your car audio system by ensuring that each speaker is playing frequencies within its designed range. This prevents distortion and speaker damage.

  7. Speaker Protection: The primary benefit of bass blockers is protecting your speakers from potential damage caused by playing frequencies they cannot handle. This can prolong the life of your speakers and maintain audio quality.

  8. Crossover Networks: Some car audio systems come with built-in crossover networks that perform a similar function to bass blockers. These networks direct different frequency ranges to the appropriate speakers, ensuring optimal sound reproduction.

  9. Customization: Bass blockers are available with different frequency cutoff points, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your specific speaker setup and preferences.

  10. Compatibility: Before installing bass blockers, ensure they are compatible with your amplifier or receiver and the speakers you intend to protect. Check the power handling capacity of both the speakers and the bass blockers.

In summary, car speaker bass blockers are valuable accessories for car audio enthusiasts who want to protect their smaller speakers from low-frequency signals and ensure that each speaker plays within its designated frequency range. By limiting the bass frequencies sent to these speakers, bass blockers help maintain audio quality and prevent potential damage. Proper installation and compatibility considerations are essential for their effective use in your car audio system.

User questions & answers

Question: Does anyone know if there is a rated power these can handle, im thinking of using these on an amplifier that has about 250 watts @ 4 ohms, bass wise
Answer: These bass blockers are designed for a speaker application . Manufacturer specs these at 50 watts RMS.
Question: Could I use theses with jl c2-350x speakers on a jk with a jl amp and kenwood headunit
Answer: what you would need would be the bass blockers designed for the 3.5" speakers.
Question: Can these handle 100watts ? I have a separate sub , so I want only light mids and highs for my door speakers
Answer: I would say yes. The wires coming off of them are a pretty thick gauge.
Question: Does this crossover work only with 6" and 6 1/2" speakers (as said)? what does the speaker size have to do with blocking certain frequencies
Answer: No it will 'work' with any speaker size. The size of the speaker has more to do with the amount of air it can move and, generally, the amount power it can handle (all things being equal). Typically, a larger speaker has more cone area than a small speaker and can move more air--thus can respond more faithfully to lower frequencies. For example, it's typical to see 6.5" respond within a -3 db limit down to 60 hertz. A 3.5" speaker typically responds down to ~ 120 hertz within those same limits. Also, typically, the power handling capabilities of a speaker has more to do with the voice coil's ability to disappate heat (power). The voice coil is that little round thing in the middle of your speaker glued to the cone in the center, extending into the magnet structure, and covered by a dust cap. Dome drivers (typically tweeters) are driven by a voice coil around the perimeter of the dome. The bigger the voice coil, typically, the better it can disappate heat (power). Larger drivers can have larger voice coils (but they don't HAVE to).The reason you would buy a capacitor is you are limiting the lowest frequencies that can pass to your speaker through 'capacitance'. By limiting the lower frequencies, you can effectively reduce the amount of energy (power) the speaker's voice coil can receive, and protect it from overheating (blowing). The different capacitance values expressed in microfarads (uF) change the frequency at which the speaker received signal (power). But a capacitor can only roll-off that power at 6db per octave. So if I bought a capacitor for a 600hz crossover point, it would be 6 decibels down at 300 hertz, 12 decibels down at 150 hertz, etc.The sellers labeling of the capacitor as for 6.5", 5.5", 4" or 3.5" speakers is based on typicalness for size, power handling, and frequency response for the respective speaker....not any precise science. Also be sure to note the impedance (expressed in ohms) of the speaker and the capacitor's crossover point at that impedance meet your needs. Typically, car speakers between 3.5 and 6.75" are 4 ohms, but can be as low as 2 ohms, and as high as 8 ohms. Hope this is helpful!

User questions & answers

Question: Can these be wired for 2ohm
Answer: These will just block the bass from coming threw the speaker you put them on. Not sure what ohm has do do with it
Question: Do these have polarity
Answer: If you mean directional, no they are not. You just splice them in on the positive wire of your speaker and you are good to go
Question: Does it matter where in the line you install this? closer to amp vs closer to speaker
Answer: Directions show close to the speaker. I don't think it matters. Correct size speaker wire for amp wattage is what's important
Question: Which bassblockers should i use on a 370 watt amplifier
Answer: Not sure but my understanding it depends on the size of the speaker. These are specifically designed for tweeters for the dashboard. There are others for 5" and up speakers check out YouTube there is a video that explains it. Hope this helps

User questions & answers

Question: Is one order for two speakers
Answer: It is a pair - for two speakers
Question: I have a pair of 2-way 3.5s that handle 150W. Trying to get a vocal sound. Do you have anything that will work with this application
Answer: I have these on my 2 way pioneer 3 1/2 and nothing but clear vocals easy application too
Question: When buying these I searched for ones that work for 6.5" and 5.25" kickers and then received them and it says they are for 6x9's can I still use them
Answer: although I cannot assure you with certainty that they work with (your) 6.5 and 5.25's, I would have to assume they do... maybe look more closely at wattage rating but it really doesn't seem as though you're exceeding they're natural ability... best luck~
Question: Do they eliminated all the bass
Answer: Just to clarify, a capacitor is a first-order filter. That is -3dB at the cutoff frequency (eg 300Hz @ 4ohm or 150Hz @ 8ohm and so on) then -6dB per octave below that. This is not an absolute cutoff. The amount that actually reaches the speaker drops fairly quickly, but some still gets through. At 4ohms (typical for car speakers) the filter should be fairly effective since by the time you reach the ranges that cause significant distortion in a mid-woofer (approximately 100 or so) it should be reduced significantly. At 8ohms it would depend very much on the quality of the speaker, but I do find that aiming for ~150Hz will probably actually be fairly tolerable for a good quality speaker in a good enclosure. Just make sure whatever you use your subwoofer is tuned to complement it. User questions & answers

Question: Will these fit 6 3/4in P1675-S Fosgates
Answer: This is Second focal plane.
Question: Do you still get the same bass sound output while having these on your speakers or does it muffle it
Answer: I don't think these fit any AK rail. I think this was originally designed for airsoft or something.
Question: do they go behind the speaker
Answer: Not sure, I have never used or worked on a SDS Lynx 12 gauge shotgun before, if it has the push pin setup like a normal AK-47 then it should work, however Amazon has a good return system that you can use to see if it does not fit send it back and put the information in the review section.
Question: Are these for all 4 speakers front and back
Answer: The only screw that I can remember is the one that tightens the latch at the bottom that locks the bracket onto the bracket holder on the side of the firearm. I don't remember any other screws that came with mine. If it did come with some, I didn't need them. But I save everything extra. Might need them later for something.

  • Easily handles power of up to 50 watts

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this with a low level input and output? Like from an iPhone (aux) to a self powered computer speaker
Answer: These are designed to be hard wired close to tweeter speaker (high frequency range of our hearing) to stop the base notes from reaching the tweeter speaker. Tweeter speakers cannot respond to the lower frequencies but with the low frequency signal applied to the tweeter speaker, it causes noise and greatly reduces the clarity of the high notes. What you are looking for to patch your phone audio output into self powered computer speakers is an attenuater. This device reduces the output voltage of your phone to a pre-amp level in order not to overdrive the computer speaker amplifier. type in attenuater in the amazon search and you will get everything from hard wire to RCA plug in.
Question: My full range speakers are dayton audio nd65-8 2-1/2 (8 ohm) and i want to add the dayton audio dc25t-8 (8 ohm), will this blocker work fine
Answer: If you are wanting to eliminate bass being emitted from your speaker, then yes, this will work.
Question: I am replacing factory tweeters that I believe are 2 ohms since the doors are. Will this be ok
Answer: So at 2 ohms all frequencies from 0 -11200Hz which is way too high up. The mids and most of the highs will also be blocked. Yes, they would work however; I don't think you would be happy with the sound produced. At 2-ohms I think these "PAC BB-5PR Pair of 3.5" Bass Blocker" would work better as this one would only block 0-5600Hz. I would not assume the tweeters are 2-ohms just because the door speakers are; it would be best to test the speaker to ensure that is correct. Good Luck
Question: Can I use these along with the capacitors that comes on the tweeter
Answer: Just swap them out
