User questions & answers

Question: Is the cobra rad 450 360° coverage & ivt filter
Answer: Yes. Radar uses radio waves which bounce around the environment causing all radar detectors to detect radar in 360° (just as your radio detects radio stations in 360°). Detectors that use "360" in their name have arrows which point to the radar source. The RAD 450 does not have directional arrows. RAD 450 does have an IVT Filter. It filters out many radar based vehicle safety systems.
Question: Does it have Bluetooth to connect with iRadar app on the phone
Answer: Yes, it works with the iRadar app.
Question: How long is manufacturer warrenty
Answer: It is 1 year from date of purchase, also you have to pay for one way shipping for warranty work. http://www.cobra.com/sites/default/files/manuals/RAD450_MANL_ENG.pdf
Question: whats in the box
Answer: The basic detector as you see, the power cord with cig lighter plug in and standard 12vdc round power connector at other end - about 7ft long, and a small manual. Works good at rejecting false alarms and detecting police radars. Very good value for the money.

Question: Funciona para comunicacion en 2 vias
Answer: This model comes with a USB cable that can be used in conjunction with any 5 volt power adapter-- both wall and vehicle-- and most people find that their phone/tablet charger works well. Please note that while the batteries are charging within the unit the scanner cannot be powered on so I would recommend using an external charger for your rechargeable batteries.
Question: Is this scanner analog or digital
Answer: Yes, there is a 1/8-inch (3.5 mm) miniplug for earphone or stereo headphones on the top of the scanner.
Question: my local police have gone digital will this work
Answer: Yes, most if not all passenger and freight operations in the USA and Canada operate around 160 mhz so you can absolutely program the scanner and listen in. The EOT (End of Train) devices, broadcast over the 400 mhz range which you should be able to hear also. User questions & answers

Question: If I order this now, will I receive a new unit that does not have the bug where it has to be returned to Uniden to fix
Answer: *IF* the seller returned his stock as they were instructed to, all current stock should be fixed. Only the seller would know that. You would have to contact them directly before purchase. I would *think* all the old stock with the bug has been sold by now, as everyone was sold out for a few weeks during the recall. Id think its safe now. Even if you got the old version, Uniden will swap it with a new unit, and give you a 3 year extended warranty for your trouble. Not to shabby. Since I see the seller answered already, just disregard my comments and grab one!
Question: can you power this unit from the usb cable in the car
Answer: The Unit cannot be powered from the USB cable the scanner comes with a cigarette lighter adapter and hardwire cable to connect to a car battery. You can use either one of those cables to power the unit but the USB cable is for data transfer only for this scanner.
Question: i had read that all you have to do is put your zip code in and your good to go is that true or not
Answer: Yes that is true but I also use program ARC536PRO to help me monitor what I receive. This receiver is great. The Zip code is all you need to get started. I learned a lot from YouTube video's. Have fun :-)
Question: Has Uniden fixed the WiFi dongle or Add the siren app yet? It has been a year since this thing came to market and still no updates
Answer: I purchased the BCD536HP scanner and the BC-GPSK antenna. From my view point this is nothing but a big fat lie from Dan M.This App was a MAJOR selling point of this unit; the scanner even comes with the Wi-Fi dongle; the package even shows the Wi-Fi dongle on it!It's been over a year? REALLY?!? .....REALLY?!?!I would recommend no one buy ANYTHING from Uniden until they keep their promise on the MOST expensive scanner system they have ever sold. I know I'm over $600 into it and it still isn't complete.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the SOS alarm, and does it actually send a signal
Answer: No
Question: If the 2000mh power bank is depleted and my phone is plugged into it, would the phone still charge off of the triple a batterys
Answer: There is no indication that the battery is replaceable. If it were, it would probably cost more than a new flashlight anyway. When/if it gives out, you'd throw the battery away anyhow. That is the bigger pollutant than the rest of the plastic case. With all due respect to the environment, I'd say it's a minor worry.
Question: How long of a life does this radio have? And I am talking about it’s full life after charging over and over? 1 year? 2-3 years
Answer: It says on the instruction sheet that it s NiMH
Question: Can you keep the 2000mah battery going indefinitely with cranking in case of a hurricane that knocks out power for weeks
Answer: Not very bright. I'd say around 50 lumens

User questions & answers

Question: I know nothing about scanners in general. Is this a good scanner for beginners, and does it come with everything needed to set up and listen
Answer: In short, it is a good basic starter scanner. It will get you all analog transmissions from 27Mhz all the way up to 800Mhz.For a beginner scanner though, it can be a little tough to program manually. I learned through google searches and youtube videos. But if you want to just figure out what is going on around you, the scanner is preset to scanner different frequency stretches with the push of a button. So you can tell it to search just the standard police/fire/ems frequencies, or just the aircraft frequencies instead of manually programming.Oh, and yes this comes with enough accessories to permanently (wiring harness) or temporarily (cig lighter) set up in your car/truck or in your home as a base scanner (wall plug).Hope that helps..
Question: What is the difference between the Uniden Scanner model number BC355N and the Uniden Scanner with model number BC355C
Answer: The 335N is just an updated model. The BC355C is no longer in production by Uniden instead the newer BC355N is the current production model. Both scanners are essentially the same aside from very minor technical specifications, just one is currently in production and the other isn't.
Question: what type of external antenna connector does it take I want to use it in my RV and I have a car type push in plug does that work
Answer: This is a helpful tool, now in most area police use a different type of radio. They use a p25 phase 2 to help prevent people from hearing them. The scanner for that kinda of radio comes at a high price! I work in EMS, I use this radio when I’m not working to try to avoid any road that has a MVA. I also go to calls sometimes if man power is requested
Question: does the scanner recieve annalog or digital transmissions
Answer: Perhaps the a new model was released under the same part number, because there are many answer from 2013 stating this is not a digital scanner and that this is not a trunking scanner, but today in 2017 it clearly is. The description lists P25 Phase I and II as well as X-TDMA. P25 is the digital radio standard for public safety. X-TDMA is the digital standard for multimedia data over radio. There is also a lengthy list of trunking technologies that are supported by this model. Amazon should clean up and delete the old misleading answers as they no longer apply.

User questions & answers

Question: do you have to use a computer? My husband wants a scanner to hear local fire, police, etc reports. Will this one do it
Answer: The SDS200 unit had better digital reception, more features and better circuitry than that older discontinued model you mention. The SDS200 can also receive Phase 2 digital systems, which the 197 can't do, and with optional firmware update the SDS200 can monitor DMR and ProVoice Digital, which the 197 can't do.
Question: What are the exact dimensions of this unit? I would like to mount this in my semi truck on my rack with my CB radios that are approximately 7 3/4" w
Answer: If that is 14218 kilohertz, the answer is no. If the frequency is 142.180 megahertz the answer is yes.
Question: Is this radio battery operated or can you plug into electricity
Answer: Yes, a telescoping antenna comes included.
Question: My metro area uses p25 phase ii for all trunked emergency dispatch. will this scanner be of any use or do i need a different unit
Answer: Yes! Your scanner’s Replay feature will instantly replay the transmissions you’ve just heard. You can set how long a period Replay records for instant playback. This period can range from 30 seconds to 4 minutes.

What is Object Oriented Scanning?

Programming scanning receivers can be challenging, but object-oriented programming simplifies the process by using common conventions for scanning concepts that have common characteristics.

User questions & answers

Question: Does anyone believe this scanner is easier to use than the Whistler
Answer: The GPS receiver is installed but you need the plugin GPS antenna that must be purchased separate. (about $100.00)Any antenna can be used with the proper adapter. If you are using a outside antenna you just need to know what type of connector is on the end of the cable coming from the antenna and purchase the proper adapter. The stock antenna is SMA, but it comes with a SMA to BNC adapter. Adapters range in price from 5 - 10 dollars.
Question: Can I use an external battery such as used to recharge a iphone to power this? This is to be used at nascar race. Connected by usb
Answer: It will not allow most "Noise canceling" headphones as they are 600ohm, and the earphone jack is 32ohm!
Question: Does this scanner have a jack for earphones or earbuds
Answer: The BCD436HP comes with the handheld unit, a USB cable for data transfer and charging, an SMA to BNC adapter, rubber duck antenna, wrist strap, belt clip, printed manual, and 3 rechargeable AA batteries. It does not come with AC or DC adapters for the USB cable.

User questions & answers

Question: I can only hit two where I live. Is the extra 3 watts going to gain any range
Answer: ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA The extra watts will do less to improve transmission and reception than a quality antenna. As others have said, to increase your signal strength at the receiving radio by one S unit you have to quadruple the power output. The difference between the UV-5R standard radio and the "8 watt" "high power" radios is only a doubling of power. If you are on the move use the Nagoya 771 antenna (and watch you don't poke out your eye). If you are stationary, a homebrew 2 meter dipole or the Ed Fong antenna will significantly improve your transmission and reception. Amateur Extra HAM instructor VP local HAM club
Question: what kind of range can I expect
Answer: With the included antenna, you will get about 10 kilometers on open area land. About 5 kilometers in suburban settings. In urban settings, aabout a kilometer or two. In a boat, a bit further than 10kilometers. With the Nagoya extended antenna, you can make 20 kilometers, more or less, on open ground. However, use an external antenna on the roof of a building and you can double that range! Power does increase range. But, antenna increases range far more than more power.
Question: I am trying to receive frequencies in the 800mhz range but it will not allow me to enter
Answer: You can program these for whatever frequencies you want by downloading CHIRP and modifying the radio drivers with a text editor... Then just change the frequency range to 900mhz or whatever you want... I would not suggest trying to transmit at those frequencies but people have had some success with receiving frequencies out of band that way... You may also want to try an RF downconverter if you would rather go the hardware way instead of the software way... More info at http://www.brickolore.com/2012/05/baofeng-uv-5r-extreme-receive.html
Question: Which frequencies will I be required to become licensed for? How do I know which repeaters I might use and their associated membership fees? Thank you
Answer: You cannot use this radio in any unlicensed frequency. It is not type accepted for any radio service and is therefore illegal to sell, advertise, market, or ship to anywhere in the US. It is probably legal to use in a Ham band if you have a ham license. Ham licenses come with some great benefits, such as being able to use un-aproved radios, it is well worth the effort to get one. BTW, I have two of these radios. They work about as well as a UV-5R, of which they are a derivative They just over-powered a 5 watt radio to make it spit out 8 watts. It gets you VERY little extra distance and the transmission is really really dirty. It blows all over the 2 meter bands. If you want to see what the FCC does to out of service marketing Google "FCC DA-18-980A1". This radio has no legal use in the US except on the ham bands by hams. It is very illegal to use for MURS and FRS, and not even OK for FMRS. It transmits so dirty it is pretty obvious to anyone with a good HR rig with a display or an FCC truck that you are using a BF-F8HP. It's got a rather unique signal signature. If you want a Baofeng get one of these. They are all certified part 90 which makes them legal to sell and ship, and no questions about using them for Ham use. And get a ham license, it really opens up your options. User questions & answers

Question: My audio completely shut off on me after 3 months of ownership. Anyone else have this issue
Answer: It would be recommended to send the unit in for repair under warranty. Please contact our Customer Service on steps to send it in. 1-800-297-1023.
Question: can you hide the wire
Answer: You are not gonna hide the spiral stretch wire very easily. If you use hard wire kit and it's mounted up high on the windshield then you can run the wire under the edge of the trim and to the fuse panel. That's what I did.
Question: Can i simply plug this into a cig lighter to usb adapter and use my car's usb port to power it
Answer: Standard USB ports only deliver around 5 volts. Most detectors need 12 volts, which is what the cigarette lighter socket supplies.
Question: Why it’s not notifying me when there’s a cop close to me every time
Answer: As the other gentleman said, it's a radar detector, not a cop detector. It will only go off when you detect a police officer using his radar gun. Whether hand-held or the stationery type that operate as the police car is stopped or even driving. But when an officer isn't actually doing speed checks, they often turn the radar unit off. Even then, not all police cars are equipped with radar. A lot of police agencies may only have less than 10% of their units equipped with radar.

User questions & answers

Question: Can the programming be done on an Apple Mac
Answer: Yes it can and it's relatively straightforward IF you have the right cable. You need CHIRP http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download (get the latest daily build) and then you need this cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HUB0ONK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The beauty of this particular cable is zero drivers are needed, the Mac (at least Yosemite) automatically recognizes it. I wrote about my experience on this at my blog: https://chris.gonyea.com/2015/03/setting-up-a-baofeng-uv-5r-2-chrip-on-my-mac/
Question: Can I get basic NOAA Weather stations on this everywhere (or, everywhere 'within reason
Answer: Yes. NOAA uses 7 frequencies from 162.400 to 162.550 MHz. You can check the National Weather Service website at for specific frequencies used in your area. There are over 1000 stations, covering all 50 states. Most NOAA stations operate with fairly high power, some with as much as 1000 watts, so they should be very easy to hear.
Question: If you transmitt with this unit how can effected partys trace to the source
Answer: Bottom line is this: If you can put out an RF signal you can be found. Yes many variables go into finding the source and they can find moving signals also. Tens of Thousands of hams and or T-Hunters or Transmitter Hunters are around the globe. If you screw around with the HAM bands you will get caught.Get your Ham license it's easy and enjoy the hobby.
Question: Can this be used as a FRS 2-way radio
Answer: Reasons this makes a good "walkie talkie" (even though it is a HT - Handy Talkie 1) Removable antenna - can upgrade your antenna for your specific needs/significant improvement to performance 2) Can program the channels - not just FRS/GMRS channels 2a) Can set adjust power levels to more legal levels 2b) Can program NOAA freqs giving more value 2c) Can use/listen MURS (Multi Use Radio Service) - license free but kinda like GMRS 2d) Can set channels to receive only so nobody transmits channels they should not (NOAA) 2e) Can listen to school bus drivers, some fire departments and anybody else who uses radio (see 2d) 3) Can get test free GMRS license to legally use GMRS at full handheld power 4) Can get you a HAM license (technician class) and program Amateur UHF/VHF channels - impress your friends and ladies at bars 5) Can monitor two channels at once 6) Lots off menu options - customizable 7) Will learn about radios, "bands", frequencies and other cool stuff 8) Has more power than most walkie talkies - i.e. better range - especially if you upgrade the antenna Reasons this DOES NOT makes a good "walkie talkie": 1) To program you need to purchase the programming cable and to download CHIRP (freeware). Of course only one cable is needs for all the radios 2) Have to read instructions, try stuff on computer/radio and have it not work and you need to figure out why and maybe a youtube video or two.

The MURS-V1 is FCC certified (Part 95J) for use on MURS frequencies.

MURS channels do not share the same channels used by common walkie talkies or the store bought bubble pack children's radios.

MURS is a private, two-way, short-distance voice or data communications service for personal or business activities of the general public.

The MURS-V1 is easy and straight forward to use. The MURS-V1 comes with 3 banks of the 5 MURS two-way channels pre-programmed (allowing shared frequencies separated by tones for different departments or users). You can easily modify the MURS-V1 to transmit a Privacy tone, right from the radio menu. You can even require a privacy tone for incoming transmissions. The MURS-V1 will save any modification to the channel (even during a reboot) and will remember any channel change you apply.

There is no guesswork involved anymore between brands. The MURS-V1 can work with any MURS radio - and has every single privacy tone option available (more than any other MURS radio). Even if other users don't know which privacy tone is being used on their MURS radio; you are able to scan for which tone is being used. This ensures easy compatibility with all brands. The MURS-V1 has a high /low power toggle (2W High Power, 500mW low power)

You can modify the channel bandwidth for channels that are approved for either Narrowband or Wideband use. MURS 4 and MURS 5 (blue dot business and green dot business channels),

User questions & answers

Question: Can these work between 2 houses about 2.5 miles apart? Whats the best replacement antennae for better range
Answer: Great question and the answer is it depends. The best antenna replacement in you opinion is a J-pole antenna. Premium KB9VBR J-Pole Base Antenna can be purchased on eBay for about 30-40 bucks. It’s two meters long and you need the coaxial cable and an antenna adapter so the coaxial cable can stew into the radio. Make sure you annotate to have the J-Pole tuned to MURS frequency. On good days I get much better range than 2.5 miles. The great thing is that I have one and my family does not and we can still talk between the two. My J-Pole is also mounted above my roof so I get the maximum range possible. So the answer really depends where you mount the external antenna for range and that includes weather and other obsticals.
Question: beginner question: do you recharge these? how? does it come w/battery? any way to plug in for continued use? sorry, i know nothing yet
Answer: You can operate the radio while it's plugged in to the cradle to charge. If you want to bypass the battery entirely there is a battery eliminator for all the radios in the UV-82 family (of which this is a part). That can plug into a 12v cigarette lighter socket and allow the radio to run without a battery. With either solution if you think you'll primarily operate the radio while plugged in then might be worth getting the BTECH QHM22 to go along with the radio.
Question: Does this radio have a call button like the Dakota radio
Answer: I don't know anything about the Dakota radio. If you mean a button that will send a tone to all radios on that frequency, PL, etc. then the answer is no, but you can accomplish the same thing by pressing any DTMF button while transmitting. It does have an alarm function, which I do not recommend you using as a call button. The alarm will get everybody's attention, alright. This radio does have an extensive array of CTCSS, DCS and tone burst options that permits programming and select calling, well beyond the capabilities of a call button. It is a great radio.
Question: i need a pair for my business, one inside at my desk, with the ability to speak to people outside the business on the street. these work for this
Answer: You got some good answers. However, the question is questionable. You didn't give any idea of what distances you're talking about. A good strategy for finding "how much antenna" you need is to start somewhere. Easiest is to start with a handie talkie on your desk. See if that gives you comfortable coverage over all your requirements. If it almost gives you sufficient coverage, try installing a base-station antenna indoors, maybe hanging from a ceiling, which might be sufficient. The least antenna that gives you your necessary coverage will also provide the most privacy for your base signals, since they won't extend further than necessary. If that's not good enough, you can put the antenna outside. The base-station antenna should be cheap, a small vertical antenna mounted on a pole. Find an antenna-installer with experience, whom you trust to drill a hole in your roof or wall to bring the transmission line through. Their rates for doing the job will be the most expensive part. An experienced installer will put the antenna in a spot that can never hit an electric line -- e.g., if the antenna might fall or if an electric line might fall. A test to see if an installer is experienced is if they bring up the subject of "lightning protection," such as when summarizing the parts list of the installation. If you put base-antenna right outside your window, it doesn't have to be the highest point on the building unless you need to talk 5 miles away. Major increase in signal strength going from a walkie talkie on your desk to putting the antenna just outside your window, which also means the shortest length of coax cable, the transmission line between your radio and the antenna. Shorter coax means less signal-loss between your radio and the antenna, and there's cost savings too. There are different sizes and prices of different coax; the antenna installer should help determine which type of coax to get. You didn't say, but if your required coverage is citywide, then you should go straight to putting the antenna on the highest point of the roof. Use RG6 coax, same as used for DirecTV (microwaves), if there's a long run between the roof and your desktop radio. No concern about the radio being 50 ohms and RG6 being 75 ohms. The impedance mismatch causes a slight loss, but the RG6 is such a popular coax that the cost savings are significant, and the antenna installation will be so superior being on the roof, the slight impedance difference won't hurt nuttin'. It's uncomfortable to hold the handie talkie with that thick coax hanging off of it. You could end the RG6 with a 6 foot length of RG58 (pigtail), which is much thinner and more flexible, and easier to deal with plugged into your handie. You'll want to hook up an external microphone to the handie for your comfort. A more professional answer, instead of a handie talkie on your desk, is for your base station to be a proper desktop radio -- a "base station" radio. There are "mobile" MURS radios that can fit the bill. You'd need to get a 12 Volt power supply to power the mobile radio. Compared to handie talkies, mobiles have superior receivers for rejecting interference, which will be useful if it's hooked up to a bigger base-station antenna. And a mobile has better receive-audio, able to drive a more powerful external speaker, which the boss deserves. Amazon item B004K370GA is a tiny, MURS "base station." Might be ok. It can be upgraded to a bigger external antenna if necessary.

MURS is a two-way license-free radio service for personal or business activities. MURS can transmit farther in open areas compared to traditional FRS walkie talkies

The MURS-V1 is a MURS handheld radio compatible with all brands of MURS Radios. The MURS-V1 is a license-free two-way radio.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this unit come with a mount
Answer: Yes it does. Windscreen suction mount.
Question: Is there’s a big difference between this one and the dfr
Answer: They will pick up the same bands.
Question: does the detecter only detect when the triger on the laser gun is pulled
Answer: Yes because until the trigger is pulled the radar gun is not transmitting ANY kind of signal to detect
Question: does the mute feature quiet all bands including laser
Answer: It does. I'm not sure why you would mute though. I have loud music when i drive and have this thing turned all the way up. Pretty dang accurate so far. Cops turn off their speed lasers sometimes until your right next to them.
