12 best handheld vhf radios
Handheld VHF radios are essential communication devices commonly used in marine and outdoor settings. These radios operate on the Very High Frequency (VHF) band, typically between 156.000 MHz and 162.025 MHz, and are widely used by boaters, sailors, hikers, campers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. Here are some key points about handheld VHF radios:
Marine Two-Way Radios: Handheld VHF radios are often referred to as marine two-way radios because they are primarily used for communication on the water. They are essential for ensuring safety, coordinating activities, and contacting other vessels or rescue services while at sea.
Waterproof and Floatable: Many handheld VHF radios are designed to be waterproof and even floatable. This ensures that they remain operational even if accidentally dropped in the water.
Channels and Frequencies: VHF radios have specific channels designated for various purposes, such as distress calls, weather updates, and general communication. Channel 16, for example, is internationally recognized as the emergency and hailing channel.
Digital Selective Calling (DSC): Some modern handheld VHF radios come with DSC capability, which allows for automated distress alerts and position sharing in emergency situations.
Battery Life: The battery life of handheld VHF radios can vary, but it's important to choose a model with sufficient battery capacity for your needs. Rechargeable and replaceable battery options are available.
Range: The range of handheld VHF radios can be affected by various factors, including antenna height, atmospheric conditions, and obstacles. In open water, they typically have a range of several miles.
NOAA Weather Alerts: Many handheld VHF radios include NOAA weather alerts, which provide up-to-date weather information, including warnings and forecasts.
Accessories: Accessories like external microphones, headsets, and extra batteries are often available to enhance the functionality and convenience of handheld VHF radios.
Licensing: In many countries, operators of VHF radios are required to obtain a license. It's important to understand the licensing requirements and regulations in your area before using one.
Emergency Situations: Handheld VHF radios are crucial for calling for help in emergency situations. They can be used to issue distress calls, communicate with the Coast Guard, and coordinate rescue efforts.
User-Friendly Interface: Manufacturers often design these radios with user-friendly interfaces, making them relatively easy to operate even for those with limited radio experience.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as antenna checks and battery charging, is essential to ensure the reliable operation of your handheld VHF radio.
In summary, handheld VHF radios are important tools for communication and safety in marine and outdoor environments. They offer a reliable means of staying connected, especially in emergency situations, while also providing access to valuable weather information and other relevant channels.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this radio as a scanner to listen to great lake freighter radio traffic |
Answer: | Yes, but if you only want to listen to voice traffic, a cheaper VHF, without DSC and GPS, will also work fine. Most are about $100 cheaper. This radio is suitable for recreational vessels involved in racing and coastal cruising. |
Question: | is this pair of radios? (2 radios for |
Answer: | Nope, it is a single radio. The two-way designation means it both receives and transmits, as apposed to, say, your car radio, which only receives. |
Question: | how far off shore will this radio work |
Answer: | Dennis, I have only used it in local waters but believe this VHF will work 15 to 20 miles away. If you go off shore (15 to 50 miles) you should rely on a VHF with large antenna etc. |
Question: | If I buy 3 of these radios can I talk and listen to others on the same channel |
Answer: | Recent FCC change makes it legal to talk from shore to a boat on the water. Must restrict oneself to marine related traffic. Effective January 2017, the use of portable VHF radio ashore is allowed, “so long as it is limited to enhancing the usefulness of marine VHF radios without negatively affecting maritime communications.” From BoatUS Magazine, April-May, 2017 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the programming be done on an Apple Mac |
Answer: | Yes it can and it's relatively straightforward IF you have the right cable. You need CHIRP http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download (get the latest daily build) and then you need this cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HUB0ONK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The beauty of this particular cable is zero drivers are needed, the Mac (at least Yosemite) automatically recognizes it. I wrote about my experience on this at my blog: https://chris.gonyea.com/2015/03/setting-up-a-baofeng-uv-5r-2-chrip-on-my-mac/ |
Question: | Can I get basic NOAA Weather stations on this everywhere (or, everywhere 'within reason |
Answer: | Yes. NOAA uses 7 frequencies from 162.400 to 162.550 MHz. You can check the National Weather Service website at for specific frequencies used in your area. There are over 1000 stations, covering all 50 states. Most NOAA stations operate with fairly high power, some with as much as 1000 watts, so they should be very easy to hear. |
Question: | If you transmitt with this unit how can effected partys trace to the source |
Answer: | Bottom line is this: If you can put out an RF signal you can be found. Yes many variables go into finding the source and they can find moving signals also. Tens of Thousands of hams and or T-Hunters or Transmitter Hunters are around the globe. If you screw around with the HAM bands you will get caught.Get your Ham license it's easy and enjoy the hobby. |
Question: | Can this be used as a FRS 2-way radio |
Answer: | Reasons this makes a good "walkie talkie" (even though it is a HT - Handy Talkie 1) Removable antenna - can upgrade your antenna for your specific needs/significant improvement to performance 2) Can program the channels - not just FRS/GMRS channels 2a) Can set adjust power levels to more legal levels 2b) Can program NOAA freqs giving more value 2c) Can use/listen MURS (Multi Use Radio Service) - license free but kinda like GMRS 2d) Can set channels to receive only so nobody transmits channels they should not (NOAA) 2e) Can listen to school bus drivers, some fire departments and anybody else who uses radio (see 2d) 3) Can get test free GMRS license to legally use GMRS at full handheld power 4) Can get you a HAM license (technician class) and program Amateur UHF/VHF channels - impress your friends and ladies at bars 5) Can monitor two channels at once 6) Lots off menu options - customizable 7) Will learn about radios, "bands", frequencies and other cool stuff 8) Has more power than most walkie talkies - i.e. better range - especially if you upgrade the antenna Reasons this DOES NOT makes a good "walkie talkie": 1) To program you need to purchase the programming cable and to download CHIRP (freeware). Of course only one cable is needs for all the radios 2) Have to read instructions, try stuff on computer/radio and have it not work and you need to figure out why and maybe a youtube video or two. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it transmit gps when transmitting a mayday |
Answer: | No, this is not a GPS equipped unit. You'll have to spend significantly more for that capability. |

Answer: | They shipped my order to NZ within a few days |
Question: | Can the Atlantis 155 be recharged with an optional or universal AC charger |
Answer: | The unit I purchased included a 120v AC adapter. If using a universal type AC charger, make sure to pay attention to the voltage/amperage/polarity requirements as you can destroy electronics very easily if using the wrong type. This information can be found in the included manual. We really like this radio for what it is, but do not expect a $500 radio at this price. |
Question: | Want to connect the handheld to my mast antenna that has PL259 Is the antenna on the 155 removable and what type of connection is it |
Answer: | Kids have it at beech house might not see it for weeks |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can even the frs work on hp |
Answer: | From page 63 of the UV-82HP manual available online. "You may be tempted to use FRS, GMRS, MURS (in the USA) or PMR446 (in Europe) frequencies. Do note however that there are restrictions on these bands that make this transceiver ILLEGAL for use" Don't follow the advice, based on personal opinions of those who know little about radio communications and even less about the law. |
Question: | can alert tones from fire and ems be programed into this radio |
Answer: | When fire and ems transmit they automatically send out a tone before they start talking. You can look up the RadioReference dot com website (click Databases) and it will give you the frequencies for fire and ems by state. Texas gives the tones before broadcasting the audio. I would assume the rest of the country does the same. It may be the law to broadcast tones, but not sure of other states. Try it and see. I use a UV-82hp and the tones are automatic. |
Question: | Can you switch the backlight on and off manually? the automatic on/off drives me crazy(er |
Answer: | Using CHIRP, you can extend the backlight time out. |
Question: | Which would you recommend more, this uv-82hp or the bf-f8hp |
Answer: | I own both. Offhand I prefer the feel of the UV-82HP. Same with the keypad The BF-F8HP feels "overstuffed". Advantage of the UV-82HP is the Dual PTT - Toggle up tor transmit on A and toggle down to transmit on B. Very nice for dual channel use Disadvantage of the UV-82HP - MUST reboot to change between channel and VFO mode. I don't do that much - but it's annoying. Menus pretty much the same. I have become the "radio man" for our Boy Scout Camporees - and the BF-F8HP has a very nice bulk charger available. One base 6 or 8 radios. For a "field deployment" one power and one base sure beats 6 to 8 bases, cables, power warts. For that more than anything I've been procuring more BF-F8HP and that's what the staff is familiar with. I sure wish there was a bulk charger base for the UV-82HP. |

BaoFeng UV-82HP
The UV-82HP is the second generation of the classic UV-82 Series. Some new features found in the UV-82HP are the three selectable power levels (Low - 1 watt, Medium - 5 watt, High- 7/8 watt ) allowing for a high-output of up to eight watts.
What Makes it Unique?
It has 3 Power Levels (1, 5, 7/8 watt).
VFO/ MR (Frequency Mode) can be locked via software.
The Dual Push-to-Talk Switch can be synchronized via software to simplify operation of the radio.
A new 80 Page In-Depth User's Guide.
It includes the High Gain V-85 Antenna to Optimize Performance.
Full Accessory Compatibility with all UV-82 accessories.
Customize Your Operation With Channels, Programmable Buttons, And More.
You can program your UV-82HP exactly how you want it. There are 128 programmable memory channels. You can add or remove channels from scanning list using the free computer software. You can give channels alphanumeric names, using a computer. The radio has 3 power levels (8 watt maximum), allowing you to choose how far you can communicate.
Dual or Single Push-to-Talk Selectable
The UV-82 Series come with a dual push-to-talk button. The dual PTT allows you to transmit on two frequencies by the use of the rocker push-to-talk switch. By pressing 'up' you can transmit on 'Frequency A' and by pushing down you can transmit on 'Frequency B'.
Frequency A or B can also be used as a scanner of channels, frequencies, CTCSS and DTS tones.
Note: The BaoFeng UV-82HP allows you to synchronize the PTT button to re-enable a single Push-to-Talk switch. This simplifies the use for those who require only one frequency to talk on.
See the Full Comparison Chart
Click the image to zoom and compare the UV-82HP to other BaoFeng Models.
The UV-82HP is a major update to the previous UV-82 model with firmware, hardware, and even packing upgrades.
There are a variety of BaoFengs models in existence, but generally no differences exist. Some models are even re-manufactured units.
No matter the model number BaoFeng radios are based on one of these chipsets.
The UV-82HP is a upgrade from the UV-82 and UV-5R series with the addition of features, power levels, and the updated chipset revision that supports the High Power.
Versatile Radio
The UV-82HP also includes: External Accessory Compatibility, FM Radio, Flashlight, Emergency Alarm.
The UV-82HP has one built-in receiver but can 'watch' two channels/frequencies (semi duplex). The UV-82HP will monitor both frequencies giving priority to the first station to receive an incoming call.
The UV-82HP supports CTCSS, DCS, and DTMF calling methods. Tone calling (private line) is required by most repeater applications and the UV-82HP supports the latest standards.
The UV-82HP can send DTMF tones. This allows for sending ANI (Caller ID) or remote commands that require DTMF tones.
The UV-82HP is able to Transmit on Narrowband (12.5kHz) and Wideband (25kHz).
BaoFeng UV-82 Series Radio
The UV-82 series is BaoFeng's most commercialized radio series. Compared to the UV-5R and other previous series; the UV-82 radios come with a much louder speaker (1 watt), while other current BaoFeng radios use a 700mW speaker.
The UV-82 series radios also have a more solid case that employ larger buttons as well compared to the previous BaoFeng series. The UV-82HP uses the latest BaoFeng chipset and PCB board that outperforms the range, accuracy, and output of the previous BaoFeng chipsets.
It is not simply a remake but a new radio from the ground up.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be charged with a USB power bank |
Answer: | Mine can only be charged in the charging cradle that came with the unit. It can be connected to either AC or 12V DC. I'm not aware of an adapter to charge off USB. |
Question: | Can you actually navigate with it |
Answer: | This is an excellent product. The menu and screens are a little difficult to learn, however the time taken is worthwhile. Navigation and waypoints are easy to establish. Deleting waypoints is rather difficult to do. The battery life is very good, and lasts over 24 hrs with limited use. Great backup. I recommend this product. |
Question: | What is the maximum range in miles |
Answer: | 4-5 miles line of sight flat water. Land/island interference a lot less. Higher External antenna extends range considerably. Good radio and features for the price |
Question: | I noticed the package says hx890 is for us and hx890e is for asia and others. can someone tell me the difference as i reside in asia |
Answer: | There is a difference in the assignment of frequencies to channel numbers as well as different default hailing and emergency frequencies. You could use either radio with a conversion table handy, but it is far easier to use the appropriate local configuration. |
