3 best sonar fish finders
Sonar fish finders are electronic devices used in fishing and marine applications to detect fish and underwater structures by emitting sound waves and analyzing their reflections. Here's some information about sonar fish finders:
Principle of Operation: Sonar (Sound Navigation and Ranging) fish finders work on the principle of sending out sound waves, usually in the form of high-frequency pulses, into the water. These sound waves travel through the water and bounce off objects like fish or the bottom of the water body. The fish finder then listens for the echoes of these sound waves and interprets the data to create a graphical representation of what's beneath the water.
Transducer: The key component of a sonar fish finder is the transducer. This device sends out the sound waves and receives the echoes. Transducers are typically mounted on the hull of a boat, on a fishing pole, or even as part of a portable handheld device. Different transducers have varying frequencies, with higher frequencies providing more detailed images in shallow waters, while lower frequencies are better for deep-sea fishing.
Display: Sonar fish finders come with various types of displays, such as LCD screens or LED displays. The data received from the transducer is processed and presented on the screen as a visual representation of the underwater environment. This can include fish arches, depth readings, and bottom structure.
Features: Modern sonar fish finders often come with advanced features like GPS integration, chart plotting, and water temperature readings. Some models allow you to create maps of your favorite fishing spots, mark waypoints, and track your boat's path.
Types: There are different types of sonar fish finders available, including portable handheld units, fixed mount units for boats, and ice fishing models designed for cold weather use.
Applications: Sonar fish finders are widely used by recreational and commercial fishermen to locate fish, identify underwater structures, and determine water depth. They are also essential tools for navigation and safety, helping boaters avoid hazards hidden beneath the water's surface.
Maintenance: Proper maintenance is essential to ensure the accuracy and longevity of a sonar fish finder. This includes regular cleaning of the transducer, checking for any cable or connection issues, and keeping the unit protected from extreme weather conditions.
Overall, sonar fish finders are valuable tools for anglers and boaters, helping them increase their chances of a successful fishing expedition and navigate safely in various water environments. They have become an integral part of marine electronics, aiding in the pursuit of fish and exploration of underwater terrain.

Answer: | Android devices will not work with mobile data when connected to this type of wifi direct device. |
Question: | Do you guys have an answer for all the reviews saying it has limited range? What would cause this issue |
Answer: | Hi there, we do. The maximum connection range that the Deeper Start can achieve is 165 ft. However, the range can be reduced if your smartphone or tablet has a weak Wi-Fi antenna. Other than that, there are couple of steps you can follow in order to get the best kind of connection range, and you can find them here: https://deepersonar.com/us/en_us/manual/maximizing-connectivity |
Question: | It says it connects through WiFi. What if there isn't WiFi available? Do I need an internet connection to use this |
Answer: | You don’t need a Wi-Fi internet connection or mobile data at your fishing spot! The Deeper device has an internal Wi-Fi access point that you can connect on your smartphone or tablet. All you have to do is to turn on Wi-Fi on your smartphone and connect to Deeper access point. You can connect your Deeper device in any place of the world - even the rain-forest of Amazon. |
Question: | I fish in a pond in Florida with lots of turtles. Would the finder show these as fish |

Deeper Start Fishfinder
The Start smart sonar is an easy-to-use, wireless, castable fish finder for recreational bank, dock or shore fishing. Paired with the user-friendly Deeper App, you’ll be able to see fish location, their size and suspended depth as well as underwater bottom contour and vegetation. It easily casts out and scans down to 165 ft. Now you’ll spend more time catching and less time searching, sweating and swearing.
Comes with user-friendly instruction manual and USB charging cable.
Key Start Features
- Fish Finding – Fish icons in three sizes to indicate size. Fish depth tags so you’ll know where they are in the water column. Fish alarm so you’ll never miss a fish.
- Discover Underwater Details – Displays bottom contour, vegetation and depth scale so you can pinpoint fish feeding spots or ambush points.
- Data Retrieval – All scans automatically saved with date/time stamp and view-able in app History.
How the Wi-Fi Works?
The Start utilizes smart technology to send sonar readings directly to your smartphone via Wi-Fi. You do not need an internet connection or cellular data for the fish finder to work. It generates its own Wi-Fi signal, which syncs with your smartphone, anytime, anywhere. Wi-Fi connectivity is 10x better and more reliable than Bluetooth.
Charging
Make sure your fish finder is fully charged. The Deeper Start charges in 2.5 hours and uses a USB cable that is compatible with any USB port. The battery lasts for 6 hours of continuous usage. Keep in mind that it isn’t necessary to use it continuously, unless you’re having fun scanning.
Connecting
Use the barrel swivel to securely attach the fishing line to your Start fish finder. Place it in the water and it will automatically switch on. Connect to your fish finder via your phone settings. Then, open the Deeper App (make sure it’s up-to-date) to start scanning the water.
Important: Make sure you have turned off all Wi-Fi assistance on your smartphone (e.g., “Wi-Fi Assist” on iOS) or switch off Cellular Data altogether. This will ensure an uninterrupted connection.
Casting
Once connected, you’re ready to cast out. Your Start has a connection range of 165ft. To ensure a solid connection, do not put your phone on the ground or in your pocket. We recommend using the Deeper smartphone mount for your rod.
Scanning
Once your fish finder hits the water, you’ll start to see fish and depth data on your smartphone screen. Slowly reel in the fish finder and you will see changes in depth and fish location. If you don’t see any fish icons, that means there aren’t any fish! Try another spot until you find fish.
Important : The screen will scroll from right to left even if your sonar is stationary. That’s because your fish finder is constantly sending out scanning beams.

What is CHIRP?
A traditional sonar sends out a single frequency pulse at a time. A CHIRP (Compressed High Intensity Radiated Pulse) sonar sends out a continuous flow of frequencies, ranging from low to high and because of this, the sonar readings are much clearer and have a higher resolution compared to traditional sonars.
Powerful
Deeper CHIRP is the only castable fish finder that: Scans down to 330ft and casts out to 330ft. Finds fish 6” from water’s surface. Has three beam frequencies (Wide 100kHz 47°, Medium 290 kHz 16°, Narrow 675kHz 7°) and a superior 0.4” target separation.
Versatile
Portable, wireless and castable. Use it for fishing on or offshore, in saltwater or freshwater. Troll from a kayak or small boat or cast from the shore or SUP. It has a traditional ice flasher display so you can take it ice fishing….take it practically anywhere.
Fast
Charge battery to 80% in 45 minutes and 100% in just 75 minutes.
Excellent Target Separation
With a 0.4” target separation, you’ll be able to easily differentiate between objects underwater, pinpoint target species even when they are amongst a school of bait fish and track the tiniest lure when vertical jigging.
Extreme Depths Precision
With CHIRP, surface clutter and noise are minimal, so you can expect precise sonar readings in very shallow water and locate fish as close as 6” from the water’s surface. To the other extreme, you will be able to distinguish bottom huggers in water as deep as 330ft.
3 Beam Frequencies for Versatility
Discover fish holding spots faster by scanning an area with the wide-angle beam, 47° (100 kHz). Use the mid beam, 16° (290kHz) to drill in on that hotspot you've located. Home in on your target species with the very detailed, 7° (675kHz) narrow beam.
Deeper Lakebook
Every sonar scan and bathymetric map you create with your Deeper CHIRP, every point of interest (aka waypoint) you mark using the Fish Deeper App, all in one place with Deeper Lakebook, your personal journal for better fishing.
Boat fishing
Ideal for small boats. Cast out or troll from your pontoon, jon boat, dingy or belly boat. Troll smoothly at a low speed of 2mph (3kph) for accurate sonar readings or cast out to hard to reach places.
Kayak/SUP fishing
With the Flex arm mount, the Deeper CHIRP installs on your kayak in seconds, no drilling, no cables or batteries. Ideal for SUP fishing, it fits comfortably into a hatch or tackle box. Troll and map or cast out to reach those hard to access areas.
Ice fishing
As an ice fishing flasher, Deeper CHIRP makes hole hopping easier with no transducer or wires. The 0.4” / 1 cm target separation lets you see when your target species are about to strike.
Shore fishing
CHIRP sonar technology with an outstanding target separation, makes it the best portable and castable fish finder on the market for shore anglers. Scan the water to locate holding spots and find fish.
