7 best deep water fish finders

Deep water fish finders are specialized electronic devices designed for anglers and boaters to locate fish and underwater structures in deep bodies of water. These devices use sonar technology to send sound waves into the water and analyze the echoes to create detailed images of what lies beneath the surface. Here's what you need to know about deep water fish finders:

  1. Sonar Technology: Deep water fish finders rely on sonar (Sound Navigation and Ranging) technology. They emit sound waves (sonar pulses) into the water, which bounce off objects, fish, and the seabed. The device then analyzes the returning echoes to create a visual representation of the underwater environment.

  2. Transducer: The transducer is a crucial component of a fish finder. It is typically mounted on the boat's hull or transom and sends and receives sonar signals. The transducer's placement affects the accuracy and performance of the fish finder.

  3. Display: Deep water fish finders feature a display screen that shows the sonar data in real-time. The quality of the display, including screen size and resolution, can vary among models.

  4. Depth and Fish Detection: These devices can provide information about the depth of the water, the location of fish, and the presence of underwater structures. Some advanced models can even differentiate between fish species and display fish arches or icons on the screen.

  5. Frequency: Fish finders often come in different frequency options, typically ranging from low to high. Higher frequencies are suitable for shallower waters, while lower frequencies penetrate deeper, making them ideal for deep-sea fishing.

  6. GPS Integration: Many modern deep water fish finders are equipped with GPS functionality, allowing users to mark and save waypoints, track their routes, and return to specific fishing spots or locations of interest.

  7. Chartplotting: Some fish finders combine GPS and chartplotting features, providing detailed maps of the waterbody and helping users navigate while fishing.

  8. Connectivity: Fish finders may offer connectivity options such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, enabling users to pair their devices with smartphones or tablets for additional data sharing and control.

  9. Power and Battery: Deep water fish finders require a power source, and most are designed to connect to a boat's electrical system. It's important to ensure that the device has a reliable power supply to avoid interruptions during fishing trips.

  10. Installation: Proper installation is crucial for the accurate performance of a deep water fish finder. The transducer must be mounted correctly, and the device should be calibrated according to the water's depth and conditions.

Deep water fish finders are valuable tools for serious anglers and boaters who want to improve their fishing efficiency and increase their chances of a successful catch in deeper waters. These devices provide real-time information about underwater conditions, helping users make informed decisions while on the water.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use my phones 5g data while connected to deeper's wifi signal
Answer: Android devices will not work with mobile data when connected to this type of wifi direct device.
Question: Do you guys have an answer for all the reviews saying it has limited range? What would cause this issue
Answer: Hi there, we do. The maximum connection range that the Deeper Start can achieve is 165 ft. However, the range can be reduced if your smartphone or tablet has a weak Wi-Fi antenna. Other than that, there are couple of steps you can follow in order to get the best kind of connection range, and you can find them here: https://deepersonar.com/us/en_us/manual/maximizing-connectivity
Question: It says it connects through WiFi. What if there isn't WiFi available? Do I need an internet connection to use this
Answer: You don’t need a Wi-Fi internet connection or mobile data at your fishing spot! The Deeper device has an internal Wi-Fi access point that you can connect on your smartphone or tablet. All you have to do is to turn on Wi-Fi on your smartphone and connect to Deeper access point. You can connect your Deeper device in any place of the world - even the rain-forest of Amazon.
Question: I fish in a pond in Florida with lots of turtles. Would the finder show these as fish
Answer: Thanks for the question! Due to air-bladders, fishes provide a slightly different kind of ultra-sound return compared to other underwater objects, so you shouldn't have any issues - Deeper is smart enough to distinguish what kind of sonar return is a fish or not.

Product features

Deeper Start Fishfinder

The Start smart sonar is an easy-to-use, wireless, castable fish finder for recreational bank, dock or shore fishing. Paired with the user-friendly Deeper App, you’ll be able to see fish location, their size and suspended depth as well as underwater bottom contour and vegetation. It easily casts out and scans down to 165 ft. Now you’ll spend more time catching and less time searching, sweating and swearing.

Comes with user-friendly instruction manual and USB charging cable.

Key Start Features

  • Fish Finding – Fish icons in three sizes to indicate size. Fish depth tags so you’ll know where they are in the water column. Fish alarm so you’ll never miss a fish.
  • Discover Underwater Details – Displays bottom contour, vegetation and depth scale so you can pinpoint fish feeding spots or ambush points.
  • Data Retrieval – All scans automatically saved with date/time stamp and view-able in app History.

How the Wi-Fi Works?

The Start utilizes smart technology to send sonar readings directly to your smartphone via Wi-Fi. You do not need an internet connection or cellular data for the fish finder to work. It generates its own Wi-Fi signal, which syncs with your smartphone, anytime, anywhere. Wi-Fi connectivity is 10x better and more reliable than Bluetooth.

Charging

Make sure your fish finder is fully charged. The Deeper Start charges in 2.5 hours and uses a USB cable that is compatible with any USB port. The battery lasts for 6 hours of continuous usage. Keep in mind that it isn’t necessary to use it continuously, unless you’re having fun scanning.

Connecting

Use the barrel swivel to securely attach the fishing line to your Start fish finder. Place it in the water and it will automatically switch on. Connect to your fish finder via your phone settings. Then, open the Deeper App (make sure it’s up-to-date) to start scanning the water.

Important: Make sure you have turned off all Wi-Fi assistance on your smartphone (e.g., “Wi-Fi Assist” on iOS) or switch off Cellular Data altogether. This will ensure an uninterrupted connection.

Casting

Once connected, you’re ready to cast out. Your Start has a connection range of 165ft. To ensure a solid connection, do not put your phone on the ground or in your pocket. We recommend using the Deeper smartphone mount for your rod.

Scanning

Once your fish finder hits the water, you’ll start to see fish and depth data on your smartphone screen. Slowly reel in the fish finder and you will see changes in depth and fish location. If you don’t see any fish icons, that means there aren’t any fish! Try another spot until you find fish.

Important : The screen will scroll from right to left even if your sonar is stationary. That’s because your fish finder is constantly sending out scanning beams.

User questions & answers

Question: can you cast this by its own with no hook on one pool and cast a compleat ring with another pool. That way the ibobber scans and gives me readings
Answer: I am considering a release clip on the I bobber to a separate line. It won't work for casting but if you are letting it out in a current it may be neat to see the fish hit the bait. But I would hate to lose it on a fish.
Question: Can I use it as a simple depth finder white 5mph trolling ? ANd what is minimum depth
Answer: You may find it tough to troll with it if not impossible. I just use it on my Kayak while paddling and it loses total accuracy. It skips bottom detail and depth is completely inaccurate. It tends to "artifact" on the screen. Also, the 3' minimum is pretty close although at times I've wondered exactly how accurate the depth is.
Question: does this work with Amazon fire OS
Answer: I got it working on my 2018 Kindle ...wouldn't know about older or newer models
Question: Anyone compare the iBobber to the very similar (but 2x more expensive) Deeper portable fish finder
Answer: Yes. I had the Deeper first, but lost the device in a rainstorm. I decided to get the iBobber as a replacement to the Deeper. The Deepers hardware and software is much more detailed than the iBobbers. The iBobbers only has a 90 degree scan, as opposed to the Deepers 90 degree, and 120 degree scans. The Deeper shows 4 different sizes of fish, along with several types of "fish" alarms. Both offer a 15 minute sonar scan replay. Please note that both sonar bobbers require re-syncing upon each and every use. As the sonar bobbers only turn on when in the water or charging. The Deeper has quicker syncing time than that of the iBobber. If I had to buy another sonar ball, I might first look at the sonar scanners available in a RC boat package. The RC option seems much easier to get the sonar scans "where" you want them, and less water noise when casting your sonar bobbers out. If I had to get another sonar "bobber" I would recommend the Deeper.Does this justify Deepers cost of roughly 2X the iBobber? What the iBobber brings to the table is simple easy to use scanning. The Deeper offers much more than the iBobber in regards to hardware and software

Product features

iBobber Wireless Fish Finder

The mobile fish finder and app that you can bring with you wherever you fish. The iBobber was designed with portability and flexibility in mind so anglers of all skill levels and types could take the latest in portable sonar fish finding technology with them on the go. The iBobber is one of the best personal fish finder on the market for fishing from shore and docks, and is ideal for kayak, raft or canoe fishing and for bottom sounding areas not accessible by boat. It works in saltwater and freshwater, and is very effective at locating fish and structures on ponds, lakes, streams, and rivers. It even works for ice fishing.

The free app syncs via Bluetooth Smart to the iBobber device, and allows you to map waterbeds, mark spots, log water temps and depth, add lures, species, and photos in the trip log. The built-in LED beacon, and the strike and fish alarms, are great for ice fishing, carp, and night fishing. Fishing Gifts

Do you have an angler or outdoors lover in the family for whom you'd like to buy some fishing gear for but don’t know what to get? Are you an angler worried that your spouse is going to spend a bunch of money on some gear you don’t need or already have? In either case we have a great solution for you. The iBobber portable fish finder and app is a great fishing gift for the angler on the go, the young angler just getting into fishing and even the seasoned pro with all the gear imaginable. There are several reasons why we think the iBobber makes a great fishing gift at the holidays, on birthdays, Father’s Day or Mother’s Day. The relatively low price and high quality are immediate advantages and even for the fisherman who has everything, including a fishing boat and lots of gear, chances are they don’t have a portable fish finder in their tacklebox.

A lot of anglers are very picky about their gear, especially rods, reels and lures and the iBobber is a great new piece of tackle that they most likely don’t already have. The iBobber is a personal sonar device that helps anglers catch fish in a wide variety of situations and will augment anyone’s individual fishing style. Plus, it’s cool and uses the latest in sonar and mobile phone technology and anyone who loves tech will enjoy using the iBobber. You can think of it as an iPhone fish finder or Android fish finder and it even works with the Google Watch and iWatch.

If your favorite angler loves ice fishing it makes a great Christmas / Holiday season gift because they will be able to go out and use it immediately. The iBobber and app are ideal tools for ice fishing due to the light weight and portability, making it easy to bring along on the ice, but also for the ice fishing features like the fish alarm, when fish are present, trip log to save your favorite spots, water temps, depths and species caught and GPS marking for future trips.

The app is free and so it’s especially useful for sharing with others like when camping or at a house on the water where lots of people come and fish and folks take out rafts, canoes, kayaks, rowboats, jonboats etc. The light weight and portability are features that make it perfect for camping, RVing and hiking trips and for times when using a boat is not practical or allowed. If the angler in your family has their phone, the ultralight iBobber and their current fishing gear they can find fish anywhere they go.

Shore Fishing

Catching more fish from shore requires some preparation and using a castable fish finder is a great way to figure out what the bottom looks like. The iBobber is one of the lightest of the portable fish finders that can be cast long distances to map the bottom contours and locate schools of fish or structure, ledges and holes where the big ones lurk. You can GPS mark spots, laydowns (trees that have fallen), weed beds, dropoffs and other underwater structure where fish might be lying in wait to ambush baitfish.

Dock and Pier Fishing

The iBobber is great addition to your tackle bucket for pier fishing. You’ll have the advantage over all the other anglers who don't know where the fish are. Whether in freshwater or at the ocean, just cast out to map the waterbed, mark fish and save GPS locations and you’ll catch more and larger fish every time. Use the iBobber fishfinder feature to locate and warn you when schools of fish gather under docks and piers and use the fish alarm to let you know when they are biting.

Kayak and (SUP) Fishing

Portable watercraft fishing is the fastest growing segment in the fishing industry and for good reason. Whether fishing in saltwater for redfish or freshwater for large or smallmouth the appeal of these craft is obvious, especially when many great fishing waterways don’t allow powered watercraft. There’s something primeval about getting closer to nature and your targets and doing battle with a big fish from a small boat. The iBobber is one of the perfect kayak accessory as a fish and depth finder that doesn’t require permanent installation and allows for reach beyond the hull.

Ice Fishing and Night Fishing

If your favorite angler loves ice fishing it makes a great Christmas / Holiday season gift because the recipient will be able to go out and use it immediately. The iBobber and app are ideal tools for ice fishing due to the light weight, portability and the fish finder and fish alarms, that let you know when fish are present and when they bite. Also use the trip log to save your favorite spots, water temps, depths and species caught and GPS marking for future trips.

STRIKER 4

3.5-inch CHIRP Fishfinder with GPS.

Navigate Easily with Waypoint Map

Since the STRIKER fishfinder series includes high-sensitivity GPS, you can see your position in relation to waypoints you have marked. Use the waypoint map to easily view, mark and navigate to locations such as brush piles, stumps and docks. It’s also a great tool for finding your way back to the boat ramp.

Check Your Speed on Screen

You can quickly and easily see your boat’s speed on the screen of your STRIKER fishfinder. It’s a great tool to make sure you are trolling at the right speed for the lure you’re using and for a particular fish species. It’s also a good way to tell if you are going the right speed in wake-controlled areas.

Take Your Fishfinder Anywhere

A portable kit is available to protect and carry your STRIKER fishfinder with GPS, so it’s perfect for kayak, canoe or ice fishing. It includes a sealed, rechargeable battery with charger, built-in transducer cable management and storage and suction cup transducer mount and float.

Experience the Clarity of CHIRP

STRIKER 4 fishfinder includes a Garmin CHIRP (77/200 kHz) transducer, which provides a visibly higher level of clarity and detail for fish and structure than traditional 77/200 kHz transducers.

Instead of sending just 1 single frequency, CHIRP sends a continuous sweep of frequencies, ranging from low to high, then interprets them individually upon their return. Since the frequencies provide a wider range of information, CHIRP sonar technology can create crisper fish arches with greater target separation.

You also can upgrade to high-performance Garmin CHIRP technology, which provides crystal-clear sonar images with even more remarkable target separation and resolution from shallow to deeper depths. For better fishing, bottom contours are more visible, even at higher speeds, and signal noise can be suppressed at greater depths to provide a more timely interpretation of what’s below.

User questions & answers

Question: Can anyone tell me how long four aa batteries last in either the 1x or 1c? i'm assuming the 1c eats up batteries more than the 1x
Answer: I have the 1C, It uses AAA not AA. A set will last about 6 hours. That's non stop use. I wanted to make a AA converter to get a longer run time because when we're out fishing, we won't be back at camp for 8 to 10 hours. I would always use good name brand batteries. you can chew through batteries.
Question: Like to find out if the hawkeye ft1px fishtrax portable dot matrix fish finder would work while trolling at a slow speed
Answer: Hi. Nope. Have three of these. That's with the stock transducer. BUT, they sell a high speed transducer that I'm going to install shortly. Hope that helps, need to be at a standstill. Good hunting..... Paul
Question: Does this one use the AA batteries
Answer: It uses 4 AAA batteries.
Question: Is this responsive with a jig
Answer: Yes, You can certainly watch your jig while ice fishing. See this article that also has an image that a customer sent in: https://support.norcrossmarine.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045152253-Can-you-you-see-the-jig-on-the-FishTrax-1C-while-icefishing-
Question: Please i need a trasceduser cable replacement. How much will it cost me
Answer: Usually we didn't sell the transducer alone. If you already bought fish finder from us before, please contact us through amazon message and we will give you the offer for the transducer alone.
Question: It works in salt water
Answer: Yes,this Lucky fish finder can work well in salt water. It is suitable for ocean、lakes and rivers. Hope this helps.
Question: can you mount the transistor in side the kayak
Answer: Usually people will fix the transducer on the hull of the kayak (the outside). Because the transducer can only be working when it touches the water.
Question: Does it work well for ice fishing
Answer: Yes it works well for ice fishing, although you must drop the transducer below the ice in order for it to read depth accurately. I also found that it has the potential to mis-detect large tube jigs as a fish, but I actually don’t mind that as it tells me how deep my bait is. I also use this with my kayak mounted with the bracket, so I get double duty. Battery life is fantastic even in below zero temps. I’ve been out with it on several outings below freezing and I’m still on the same set of batteries! I would recommend this product.
