14 best graphic sound equalizers

Graphic sound equalizers, often referred to as graphic equalizers or EQs, are essential components in car audio systems. They allow users to adjust and fine-tune the audio output to suit their preferences and the acoustics of their vehicle. Here's what you should know about graphic sound equalizers in the context of car audio and car electronics:

  1. Audio Equalization:

    • Graphic sound equalizers are devices designed to modify the frequency response of an audio signal in a car audio system. They provide control over different frequency bands to enhance or attenuate specific parts of the audio spectrum.
  2. Frequency Bands:

    • A typical graphic equalizer features a series of sliders or knobs, each corresponding to a specific frequency band. These bands typically span from low frequencies (bass) around 20 Hz to high frequencies (treble) up to 20,000 Hz.
  3. Customized Sound Profiles:

    • Car audio enthusiasts use graphic equalizers to create custom sound profiles tailored to their musical preferences and the characteristics of their vehicle's interior. For example, users can adjust the equalizer to emphasize bass for a more robust low-end or enhance mid-range frequencies for clearer vocals.
  4. Room Acoustics in Vehicles:

    • The acoustics of a car's interior can significantly affect the audio quality. Graphic equalizers help compensate for factors like the size and shape of the vehicle, upholstery materials, and speaker placement.
  5. Integration with Car Stereos:

    • Graphic equalizers can be integrated into car stereos or installed as standalone units. Many modern car audio head units feature built-in equalization controls.
  6. Presets and Memory Settings:

    • Some car audio equalizers offer preset sound profiles or memory settings, allowing users to switch between different EQ settings for various music genres or listening environments.
  7. Crossover Functionality:

    • Some advanced car audio equalizers include crossover functionality, allowing users to separate audio frequencies and direct them to specific speakers or subwoofers. This is useful for optimizing the sound distribution in a car audio system.
  8. Digital vs. Analog Equalizers:

    • Car audio equalizers come in both digital and analog forms. Digital equalizers offer precise control and may include display screens, while analog models provide tactile sliders or knobs for adjustment.
  9. Sound Quality Improvement:

    • By fine-tuning the audio with a graphic equalizer, car audio enthusiasts can achieve improved sound quality, reduced distortion, and a more immersive listening experience.
  10. Installation:

    • Proper installation is essential for the effective use of a car audio equalizer.Users may choose to install it themselves or have it professionally integrated into their car audio system.

In summary, graphic sound equalizers are valuable tools in car audio systems, allowing users to customize their listening experience and optimize audio quality within the constraints of a vehicle's acoustics and speaker setup.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I route this straight from my computer, and equalize any noise output coming from there
Answer: The spikes with the rods slip into holders on fence sections with nothing other than gravity to hold them in place. So,yes, the spikes can easily be removed from the fence sections for storage.
Question: How long this equalizer is warrantee from manufacture
Answer: I have had mine for two years and no rust. They have a thick, black enamel on them. Still look like when I opened the box.
Question: Could I use this for vocal EQ
Answer: I couldn't find a gate so I just attached two panels (where I wanted the gate to be) with bungee cords so it was easy to move one of them open.
Question: Can I use this for a 2 channel stereo
Answer: Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience. If you contact us via Amazon customer message centre with your address we will organise a replacement to be sent.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i connect speakers to the equilizer
Answer: Mixer to eq then eq to powered speakers or mixer to eq then eq to amp then amp to unpowered speakers
Question: can this EQ to subwoofer
Answer: Its good i hve 1 single channel but it qorks great..
Question: Would this work to boost the bass up a good bit in my home 2 channel stereo? I like a lot of bass without a subwoofer
Answer: As any equalizer it is just going to help arrange the different frequencies. If you want more bass you should get a subwoofer. What an eq does is re-arrange what power is already there. You could make it sound more bassy by turning down the higher frequencies but that's working backwards. If you want more bass I would suggest using the money to buy a more powerful amplifier. (Or again getting a subwoofer)
Question: Is the output for each channel stereo or mono
Answer: Mono per side. Use both channel for stereo. For few bucks extra I suggest you to get Behringer EQ instead. Amazon always have great price for those EQ.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with denon avr 2112ci receiver
Answer: Yes you can. I only use 2 channel receivers. Not into cinema and avr receivers. I use an external audio source selector. Available on Amazon. Mine handles 3 sources. But selectors with more source inputs are available. I run my sources to the inputs on the selector. Then run the single output to the auxiliary input or in the case of newer receivers, input 1,2 or 3. For my application it works very well. Technically you can connect this eq to your Denon or any other receiver without the in out loop.
Question: what would cause this to make an awfull hissing sound ? right now its useless
Answer: Trying to diagnose sound equipment is not always easy. A hum usually means a bad ground. A his could be a lose connection or a bad cable. First see if the noise is on both sides or just one. Single side noise try changing a cable from the left to the right to see if the hiss changes sides. If it does change does change out the cable. If the his stays then you have a speaker problem. If the his is on both sides check your ground. Hope this helps.
Question: Can I connect this to a yaqin mc-13s
Answer: You should beable to if u use aux cables for it
Question: Can it be connected straight to a 200 watt am/fm home reciever
Answer: Yes it will work very good with all types of recievers And 200 watts that's enuff to do alittle bit on thumppin I also have 200 watt receiver and with ROCKVILLE SOUNDS EVEN GREAT DEPENDED ON UR SPEAKER SIZE I HAVE 2 15 AND 2 SURRENDER NICE

ART HQ231 Graphic Equalizer Two Channel 31 Band Constant Q Filtering Feedback Detection Circuit

ART

Based on 16 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The HQ231 Dual 31-band Graphic EQ is perfect for any live sound application where there is a high feedback potential including monitor mixes, side-fill cabinets or high powered front-of-house mixes situations. The HQ231 features ARTs proprietary FDC Feedback Detection Circuit, with constant Q circuitry capable of delivering a 3 center frequency accuracy. Professional features like LED level metering, selectable 6dB or 12dB slider range, active balanced and unbalanced input output connectors, RFI filters, independent variable Hi Pass low cut and Low Pass high cut filters, variable input level control, passive bypass switch, clip level indicator, ground lift switch, and selectable line voltage switch make it ideal for any professional application or touring system. FDC Feedback Detection Circuit - FDC Feedback Detection Circuitry designed and developed by ART Engineering instantly illuminates an LED on the corresponding EQ band fader with the greatest sustained signal. The LED indicators can immediately show which band corresponds to the feedback frequency, allowing the sound engineer to reduce gain in that band to quickly kill the feedback while having a minimal impact on the sound of the live program material. The FDC also acts as a simple spectrum viewer while the concert proceeds showing where the hot areas are. During system setup and sound check, the FDC may be used to help identify room and sound system resonances. By increasing the gain until feedback, it is easy to identify those frequencies that are likely to be problems. Reducing the gain in these bands helps tune the sound system, and, remove problem areas before the show begins. It also helps increase the gain margin before feedback.

  • FDC Feedback Detection Circuit.
  • Dual Channel 31-Band Graphic Equalizer.
  • Output Level VU Metering on Each Channel.
  • Constant-Q Filtering.
  • Individual High and Low Pass Filters on Each Channel.

User questions & answers

Question: does it have 48v phantom for both XLR mic inputs
Answer: No.
Question: I have read this unit takes two racks spaces, albeit it states above it is 5.9 inches, so which is it? Thank you
Answer: Just measured, the height is 3.5 inches.
Question: Is this true?...i have been told that i cannot connect this to a onkyo 737 home theatre receiver because it does not have a tape loop
Answer: Hi Steve. I looked up the Onkyo 737 so I could answer your question intelligently. I need to know how you want to use the EQ before I an give you a good answer. You could use the Zone 2 output to feed the EQ input and then connect the EQ output to another source input, say if you own a tape deck and you want to equalize the response, but I do not see the traditional "tape loop" that would enable you to equalize the front two channels irregardless of which source you pick. So the simple answer is no you can't use it effectively. Sorry.
Question: whay are the in put / out put in each channel are crossing? like. rca has in put and out put on same channel
Answer: RCA is unbalanced, meaning its susceptible to noise problems. XLR (and 1/4 trs - not 1/4 tr) are balanced, and more immune to noise problems picked up in interconnecting audio equipment. Balanced connections use shielded, twisted-pair cable and three-conductor connectors (like XLR or TRS connectors). This noise cancellation is called “Common Mode Rejection.” It's also good for long cable runs. And so XLR and TRS cables are used to transmit balanced audio from one balanced device to another. In an audio rack you might be tempted to use an inexpensive cable like RCA because the cable runs are short. That's your choice, but the professionals use XLR cables for the cleanest sound they can engineer.

User questions & answers

Question: How hard is it to hook up a equalizer to my Kenwood car stereo
Answer: Depends - But I'd imagine that if you are capable of installing the HU then the EQ should be just as easy. Has the 3 typical: power. ground, remote and then the input and output(s) <-- or whatever way you plan on using the EQ. All else fails, go to YouTube and watch one of the many videos. I tried "how to install a car EQ" and it came back with "about 347,000 results" I bought this EQ and am extremely pleased with what I got for the price of this thing. Buy it. figure out to install it. It is worth it
Question: Would this make a huge difference with 4 6.5 mids and 2 tweeters
Answer: It definitely would. Thats exactly what I have
Question: This can be used to take the 2 rca inputs from head unit and make them multiple rca outputs for a 5 channel amp
Answer: Yes, I have 2 AMPs connected to it. I have a 4 channel 1000 watt Rocksford Fosgate AMP pushing the highs and mids to the 6x9s and door speakers. And I have a 8000 watt Power Accoustik AMP pushing the Bass. The 1st knob is independent bass that controls my Power Accoustik AMP. The 2nd Knob is the overall volume. So the answer is Yes. It controls my 4 channel AMP and my Mono AMP at the same time.
Question: Does thing have separate inputs channels for front and rear speakers
Answer: Having trouble with my 4 channel head unit (Alpine) - I have separate front and rear L/R RCA outputs coming from the head - I plugged the front RCA outputs into the "main" which works ok, but no place to plug in the rear output RCA cables....

User questions & answers

Question: How would you wire this to a head unit that has a front, rear and subwoofer channel? Would you only use the front and rear and toss the other set of r
Answer: So with only one input from the head unit does the eq convert it to front and rear sound? What I mean do you loose the rear sound or does it just double and split the front channel?
Question: Does this product light up
Answer: Yes it lights up blue cleaned up my audio very well
Question: Anyone els experiencing a popping noise when you take key out ignition if so any ideas on how i can stop it? I already tried grounding it to radio
Answer: Had the same issue with ankther brand EQ. Problem went away when I switched the positive from the EQ and attached it to the yellow cable straight to battery not the red to ignition. That should fix it.
Question: How would you do the power wire i see theres one in picture with a fuse but isint that to short
Answer: Hello, No the Red wire with fuse holder is not to short. The longer side of the Red wire goes to the Scar SKA7EQ, On Back of the SKA7EQ is the power, ground, and Remote terminal. The Red wire will be extended with a 14awg wire to your power source. Source could be the car battery, or an Accessory fuse circuit of 10 amps 12volts DC current. Extending this red wire is Normal in the audio installation world. The coupling will be needed to successfully butt the two wires together and crimp both sides, if u like install the double red wire size with Heat Shrink Tubbing, then Couple the wires with the "Butt Connector" , slide the heat shrink over it and heat the heat shrink with a Heat Gun, or powerfully hair dryer, then run the Red wire to the Accessory, or Battery positive Red Terminal. The same thing for the ground wire, black wire has no fuse in line so Run from your battery Negative Terminal Black, to the Scar SKA7EQ next to the Red wire, and Tighten it down to the SKA7EQ. The Remote wire is "In the business of Audio Installation" Traditionally Blue, Or Purple, Strip 4mm, or 3/8" and Install it into the Scar SKA7EQ at the R terminal, R stands for "Remote" or "Trigger" this Blue, Or Purple wire goes to your amplifier, and at the amplifier you will see a Positive terminal, a Negative Terminal and the R, "Remote" terminal the Blue or Purple Remote wire tightens onto the amp in the R terminal spot. The wire should be all 14 AWG for this. Wiring your amps u should at least use 4awg for both Power and Ground, Directly to the car/boat/atv Battery. Use small spools of OFC Copper, Red Positive, Black Negative, and Blue/Purple Remote from amazon, You have to have Amplifiers in your system to use the SKA7EQ. Get an Amplifier install kit, plus the three spools of 20ft of 14 AWG Red, Black, Blue from amazon....Good Luck.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this unit be used with a home stereo receiver using 1/4" to rca adapter cords
Answer: It's not an amp. It's a equalizer unit to fine tune music. This unit goes between the head unit and amplifier. Most head units provide 2 volt signal to the amp, this eq will provide 7 volt signal to the amp.
Question: are the cables included with this EQ? If not, how much do they cost
Answer: If I understand your question correctly then yes, it does have a plug to receive hi-level input from your stereo
Question: I received a “three prong vertical” power cord but it does not fit into the back of the unit
Answer: Yes each of the 31 bands represents an octave spanning 20Hz to 20kHz. Never tried to turn off the LEDs. They are not real bright but when they flicker it helps to locate the frequency of the feedback.
Question: I want to know i put sound to equalizer than go to mixer or go to mixer than go to to equalizer
Answer: The HQ231 has XLR, 1/4 TS, and RCA inputs for each channel.

Ultra-Compact 9-Band Graphic Equalizer with FBQ

If we all lived in a perfect world, there would be no need for audio equalization. Sound systems would be perfect and would reproduce perfect signals in all their glorious perfection. Also, everyone in that perfect world would like the same amount of bass, midrange and high frequency, and there would be no such thing as feedback. But the world isn't perfect, is it? Even the best sound system can benefit from the use of a good EQ--like the FBQ800.

Even the best sound system can benefit from the use of a good EQ. Click to enlarge.

1/4-inch and RCA inputs and outputs.

Nine steps of graphic EQ.

How Does it Work?

Imagine the frequency range of the sound you hear as a highway, a very wide one with nine lanes. Each of these "lanes" represents a single octave of the sonic spectrum. The first four lanes, labeled 63 - 500 (Hz) contain the really low frequency sound content, mainly bass, bass vocals, and the kick and tom drums. The three lanes labeled 1 k, 2 k and 4 k (Hz), make up the fundamental zone of most musical instruments and the male and female vocals. 8 k and 16 k cover the frequency range of cymbals, snare drums and higher pitched percussion instruments. The FBQ800 allows you to control the flow of audio traffic in each of these nine lanes. When properly applied, EQ makes it possible to hear all of these frequency ranges equally, thus the term equalization.

Feedback Elimination

When a specific frequency, or range of frequencies, reaches too high a level, feedback occurs--that all-too-familiar squeal or howl you get when the mic is too close to the speaker. Basically, feedback happens when there is so much of a particular frequency that it is picked up by the mic and run through the system again. That's why feedback typically gets louder and louder the longer it's allowed to occur. Needless to say, this kind of feedback is very undesirable.

This is where the FBQ800's Feedback Detection System really works its magic. In this ingenious circuitry, LEDs on the individual faders light up when that frequency band is approaching the danger zone. All you need do is lower the illuminated slider until the LED blinks out--voilá, feedback problem solved! What once required a highly trained ear is now an activity that even a child can master.

Sonic Toolkit

That really is the best way to describe the FBQ800. With its nine frequency bands, you easily fine-tune your sound and instantly eliminate feedback. And each fader can be used to boost or cut the frequency range it controls by as much as 12 dB (and that's a lot!).

Special attention is paid to the low frequency zone. In addition to low frequency faders, the FBQ800 features a Low Cut filter for removing unwanted low frequencies such as fl oor rumble, room resonance, electrical hum, etc. This is especially handy if your system is being used for speech rather than music.

To Boost or to Cut, That is the Question

Raising and lowering specific frequency bands can improve the frequency response of any room's acoustics. For instance, if the room you're in is "bass-heavy," lowering the 63 and 125 Hz faders can help eliminate an overall "boomy" or "muddy" sound. Likewise, gently boosting the 8 and 16 k sliders can add sparkle to a somewhat "dark" mix. Are the vocals getting lost in the mix? Raising the level of the 1 k slider can help bring them out.

It's important to note that raising a single fader level is not always the best solution; it's often better to lower the bands surrounding the frequency you want to bring out, and then boost the overall volume level to achieve better headroom.

Built for Accuracy and Reliability

Speaking of headroom, FBQ800's 6-digit LED Input/Output meters and level control are provided for precise level maintenance. Longterm reliability is ensured, thanks to high-quality illuminated faders and switches, and our ultra low-noise audio operational amplifiers provide outstanding sonic performance. In addition, all Mini Series components may be stacked to create an ultracompact signal processing solution.

User questions & answers

Question: What type of cables are required to hook this up between an amplifier and yamaha receiver? Much appreciated
Answer: Both
Question: Can you adjust each channel (left/right) separately
Answer: Nope, the only things lit are the little indicator lights for power +/- 12dbs and something else.
Question: I see many mention that they use this for helping hearing loss by using this unit with headphones. My question is how do you use this with headphones
Answer: They are very clean sounding eqs.
Question: does it connect to amplifier
Answer: First, this is not a player. This is a tone control with instead of just the normal bass, treble and high, divides it into 31 (from 20HZ to 20KHZ). Also, this model is mono (1 channel). You can get 2 of these or get the stereo model. You still need an amplifier and a player. You hook this up between a like a CD player and your amp.

Product description

It's amazing. One little button. It has so much effect. The Type III Noise Reduction is an entirely new concept... virtually instantaneous encode/decode within the circuitry of the box. We started out to build the finest EQ's possible, boxes with the heritage and performance to rival our famous 30 Series EQ's. And to no one's surprise they came out awfully darn good. (Ask to see the Audio Precision plots compared to the competition.) But then, Roger (our chief engineer, a nice guy, as far as engineers go) got the crazy idea of putting this new noise reduction stuff in the box. We listened to it and were amazed. The EQ's sounded great without it but with it the performance was nothing short of incredible. Check it out yourself and see. But hey, Roger wasn't about to stop there. Peak Plus Limiter. Who knows more about limiting than the folks at dbx; nobody... that's who. So when the guys were developing this new series of EQ's they wanted something that would be unique to these EQ's. That's when Roger got another one of his bright ideas and said "I bet they'll work a lot better if there's a cool limiter built in." Next thing you know, all the guys are in the studio amazed at the new limiter Roger had designed specially for the 20 Series. Once again, hearing is believing... With a threshold range of 0 to +20dbu, the Peak Plus limiter is designed to tame your program material from the subtlest nuances to the rowdiest hits. Also, the four stage LED ladder gives you a great visual indication as to what the limiter is doing.

  • Revolutionary instant encode/decode Type III Noise Reduction in-circuit at the push of a button
  • Increases S/N ratio by up to 20dB
  • Patent-pending Peak Plus Limiter threshold range from 0dBu to +24dBu (off) can transparently tame the wildest hits or the subtlest nuances of any signal
  • Four segment LED bar graph for BOTH Gain Reduction AND Output Level Status LEDs offer visual feedback for all settings on the front panel
  • Inputs: ¼” TRS, female XLR (pin 2 hot), and barrier terminal strip
  • Outputs: ¼” TRS, male XLR (pin 2 hot), and barrier terminal strip
  • Includes: 1x dbx 1231; 1x AC power cord; 1x Operator's Manual; 1x Registration Card; 4x rack mount screws and washers

Question: To connect my old amplifier pioneer a777 with rca, that it would be more convenient to use 1/4" trs or xlr
Answer: I assume you are connecting this device in series with some other input device such as an external CD Player. Or in the AUX LOOP. Both being on the front end (preamp) of your Amplifier. Either way the type of I/O jacks you use (balanced/unbalanced) are only going to effect your overall S/N ratio. Which depending on just how many beers that are left in the cooler will be your Judge and Jury. Therefore, I personally would just use 1 (L) and 1 (R) Tip-Ring (unbalanced) 1/4 inch to RCA cables for input and the same for output. I would not use any adapters as that would only worsen your already weak S/N ratio because the system is truly UNBALANCED. That's the draw back of regular consumer devices which provide only RCA I/O 's in the first place. FYI. The 1215 along with it's big brother the 1231, Which is what I use. Are both really designed to be used in a TOTALLY BALANCED Analog/Digital Professional Sound Reinforcement System from source to transducers environment. But you sure will have a GREAT sounding EQ across YOUR system either way. I hope this was of some help for you. Cheer's, Doc
Question: what are you selling. Your add says a DBX 1231 Your picture is a 2231 which is it
Answer: Jeff, the Amazon catalog has the wrong image. Image feedback request has been sent to Amazon to fix this issue. This product is the DBX 1231 Dual 31 Band Graphic EQ. Thanks Jeff-Pro Audio Land
Question: can each channel handle a stereo input
Answer: Yes You can apply either channel of your sources L/R output to the 2131's Channel 1/2 input. It doesn't matter, as long as you keep your signal flow SEPARATED and in series. I never use RCA connectors. This device was primarily designed for Balanced 3 pin audio input &outputs. The use of RCA connectors only minimizes system hum & noise. This defeats the purpose of this devices noise reduction circurty. DBX realizes this. That is why they did not make RCA connections available on this device. 98% of consumer audio systems (home) use RCA connectors not Professionally balanced 3 pin audio connectors. That is the beauty of this device. Don't try to mix apples and oranges. If the connectors are not there they are not meant to be. Hope this helps.n Doc
