10 best negative scans

Negative scans refer to the process of digitizing or converting photographic negatives into digital image files. This process is commonly used in photography and is related to storage, presentation materials, photo studios, lighting studios, and electronics. Here's what you need to know about negative scans:

  1. Purpose: Negative scans are performed to preserve and archive old film negatives, which may deteriorate over time. By converting them into digital format, photographers can ensure the longevity of their images and have more flexibility in editing and sharing them.

  2. Equipment: To perform negative scans, you typically need a film scanner or a flatbed scanner with a film scanning attachment. These devices are designed to capture the details and colors present in the film negatives.

  3. Process: The process involves placing the photographic negative on the scanner bed or into a film holder, and then using the scanner's software to capture the image. The software will typically have settings for adjusting color balance, resolution, and other image parameters.

  4. Resolution: It's important to choose an appropriate scanning resolution. Higher resolutions result in more detailed scans but also larger file sizes. The chosen resolution depends on the intended use of the scanned images.

  5. Color Correction: The scanned negatives may have color shifts or fading due to aging. Color correction and restoration can be done during the scanning process using specialized software to bring the images back to their original colors.

  6. File Formats: The scanned images can be saved in various file formats, with TIFF and JPEG being common choices. TIFF is a lossless format that retains all image data, while JPEG is a compressed format suitable for web use and sharing.

  7. Editing: Once the negatives are digitized, photographers can use photo editing software to further enhance and manipulate the images, such as adjusting exposure, contrast, and removing dust or scratches.

  8. Storage: The digitized images should be stored on reliable and secure storage media to prevent data loss. Backup solutions are essential for long-term preservation.

  9. Presentation and Sharing: The digital files can be easily presented on screens, shared online, or used for printing. They can also be incorporated into various projects or presentations.

Negative scanning is an important process for photographers and archivists, allowing them to preserve and make use of analog film images in the digital age. It ensures that valuable memories and artistic work captured on film can continue to be enjoyed and shared for generations to come.

User questions & answers

Question: How well does this scanner work with APS negatives
Answer: It takes standard 35mm slides or film strips only. Most of mine are from the 50s and 60s. What size film were you using?
Question: Is this scanner compatible with Mac
Answer: I have software and a Quickstart Guide - also safety instructions - The only address I have is: World Headquarters - 200 Scenic View rive - Cumberland, RI 02864 or website www.ionaudio.com
Question: Can you push the slides through or do you have to reload the tray
Answer: I would do one slide at a time.
Question: Wht is the scanner resolution in dpi
Answer: Yes it works with mounted slides. Aren't all slides mounted? However the slider mechanism jams regularly and has to be pulled out of the ION and you have to fiddle with it to get the slides to go through.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug
Answer: While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine.
Question: Can this scan 120 film
Answer: With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer.
Question: Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement
Answer: I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative.
Question: Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card
Answer: Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product.

Answer: Not sure. I went through the manual and found no reference to 127. I only used it for 35mm slide format which also included 126 film cut into a 35mm slide. I will try to convert some photos when I can get some. Could not have been more pleased with ease of operation or results.
Question: Is the software 64-bit? macs with catalina os will not run 32-bit programs. thanks
Answer: I don’t know I returned it as I wasn’t happy with it. Couldn’t get it to work properly.
Question: will this accept 2 5/8 size slides
Answer: Which/what mode?
Question: can I scan aps (Advantix) film cannisters
Answer: This might indicate a need to format your sd card. This can be done easily in a digital camera that accepts one. You need to find that function in the camera's menu. It can also be done in a computer. Google the procedure for your particular operating system.

User questions & answers

Question: will it do round negative discs
Answer: John, Install the drivers first, so that when you power up the scanner it will be recognized. I think you will be happy with this scanner. It isn't the fastest around, but the results are worth the wait. I think some of my old slides (1960's and 1970's) look better than they did originally.
Question: I have old black and white negatives that are a out 9cm long x 5cmwide is there a negative scanner on the market that can handle these larger old neg
Answer: I also found the SilverFast software to be horrible. I HIGHLY recommend VueScan by Hamrick Software (http://www.hamrick.com). It can utilize ALL the features of the OpticFilm 82001 (including infrared) and is much more intuitive. Available for Macintosh, Windows and Linux computer at a very reasonable cost (you can either by the current edition with free upgrades for a year for $30 or the Professional version with free lifetime upgrades for $80). They have been around for a very long time and it is constantly upgraded. It supports just about every scanner imaginable!
Question: Does it work with medium format film negatives
Answer: Yes. You will probably need the latest software update from LaserSoft. Nice scanner.
Question: Really? $40 for a cardboard box and a light
Answer: This software is excellent but like any good, flexible program, one must take the time to learn it. Another issue is that Amazon keeps reviews that are old, old, and old. This is tech stuff and a 5 year old review is worthless. Heck a one year old review is worthless.

User questions & answers

Question: will it scan negatives that are larger than 35mm in black & white
Answer: Yes it will. If your negative won't fit in the included protection envelope, you can send it through with a piece of white cardstock, and it will scan beautifully.
Question: Does this scanner work with a MAC
Answer: Hi Ann, I believe it would as what you do is scan the pictures on to a SD card that is in the scanner then you place it into your SD slot on your pc. So as long as you have the slot for a SD card you should have no problems at all. I love my Kodak P811BK 8x10 Personal Picture Scanner. I do have to turn it off once in a while if I start scanning to many pictures. I have scanned over 500 pictures so far. Take the SD card and place it into my pc and there they are in their own file. Just follow the directions and it should work great. Again, I love my Kodak P811BK 8x10 Personal Picture Scanner. Any other questions, let me know.Sincerely,Mary [email protected]
Question: Was this actually made by Pandigital like many Kodak photo products, which is now out of business
Answer: This product on Amazon showed it was a Kodak product, but when I went to register the product, I was given a error message that said "call this number." which I did. The customer service rep explained to me what I put in my explanation.
Question: Does the scanner replicate the photo colors well without having to tweak the digital file
Answer: I have scanned photos from old sepia, black and white, and color. All have come through with clarity and true to original print.

Negative Solutions Film Holders 126 Film Adapter Compatible w/ V550/V600 scanners

Based on 45 reviews Check latest price

Product description

This is a 126 film format negative holder for use with the Epson Perfection V550/V600 flatbed film scanners (US Patent Pending). This was CAD designed and manufactured for use with the obsolete 126 film format introduced by Kodak in 1963. Used commonly in Kodak "Instamatic" cameras, production of 126 film ended in 2008. 126 film was actually 35 mm in width so technically an Epson 35 mm OEM holder will work with them. The issue is that the image 126 cameras recorded was square and was also offset on the negative by 5 mm in height. Thus trying to scan a 126 negative in a 35 mm holder will result in cropping of the original image.

Specifications for the 126 negative holder:

Overall: 199 mm x 55 mm

Material: Solid Plastic

Features: Unlike some designs, this holder features a recessed channel to hold your negative strip firmly which can help avoid scratches or trapped dust that other holders may cause.

This holder is designed to fit inside the stock 120 film holder that shipped with your Canon or Epson scanner. Use of an OEM holder may not be necessary with your scanner, but it aids in proper positioning and helps avoid blocking calibrations slots on the scanner bed.

If you purchase multiple holders from us, we will adjust shipping charges after sale so that your shipping costs are combined.

NOTE: Photos show top and bottom halves of holder. Only one holder is provided.

  • Compatible with Epson Perfection V550 and V600 scanners
  • Unique Recessed Film Channel
  • Reduces scratches
  • Made in USA

User questions & answers

Question: Does this holder work with the Epson V
Answer: I don't own a Epson V800, but from what I see on Amazon the V800 is one of the best and most expensive scanners on the market today, it looks like the scanner comes with film holders similar to the V550 and there should be no reason that the 126 negative holder would not fit. Why not ask the seller if they will fit, there seem to be only one seller of these after market film holders out there, when I contacted him he answered may questions very quickly and also offered a discount when I ordered the 110, 120, and 126 film holders at the same time. I hope this Information you find helpful.
Question: Would this holder fit a Plustek Opticfilm 8200i, please
Answer: No. There is one listed for the Plustek.
Question: How is the 126 film holder different from the 35mm film holder
Answer: 126 film measures 28mm X 28mm, 35mm film measures 36mm X 24mm, 126 film holder is designed to hold 126 film and the 35mm holder is designed to hold 35mm film.
Question: When you scan a 126 negative strip with an epson perf. v600 photo scanner, how do you solve the problem of the images being chopped in the middle
Answer: You have to scan in professional mode with thumbnails turned off. Please contact me via Amazon message if you have somehow lost the directions.

Product description

Until recent years, archival film storage had been associated, at least in the public mind, with museums, government agencies, libraries, or other institutions concerned with the preservation of photographic records; however, other users of photographic film, such as commercial photographers, printing houses, publishers, and schools, have long been concerned with how best to ensure permanence of their irreplaceable photography. A sophisticated generation of amateur photographers who observed how time, humidity and casual storage damaged valuable slides and prints, nowadays, have converted to using archival storage techniques. They, too, appreciate that a picture good enough to keep is good enough to keep forever. Exclusive thin backing coupled with high clarity provides excellent resolution when proofing without removing negatives from the preserver. No other manufactured preserver has this feature. Also, continuous seams eliminate the problem of negatives hanging up in the sleeve itself. You can literally load and unload Print File preservers easier and faster. The Exclusive Hanging File System is designed specifically for hanging photographic records in standard file drawers or file boxes. Simply slide the hanger into the preserver's I.D. strip, and it's ready for hanging. And you don't need to be a professional photographer to keep your negatives, prints, slides, and transparencies permanently protected. While you might not be able to maintain an o
