10 best color calibration charts
Color calibration charts, often referred to as color charts or color calibration targets, are essential tools in photography and videography for achieving accurate and consistent color reproduction. They are used in various lighting conditions and environments to ensure that the colors captured by a camera or recorded by a video camera accurately represent the true colors of the subject. Here are some key points related to color calibration charts:
Purpose: The primary purpose of color calibration charts is to provide a reference point for color accuracy in the images or videos captured. They help photographers and videographers achieve accurate color reproduction in their work.
Color Accuracy: Color charts typically feature a range of known and standardized colors.By including these known colors in a shot, photographers and videographers can later adjust their images or videos to ensure that these colors match their true, reference values.
White Balance: Color calibration charts are often used to set the white balance of a camera. By including a white or gray patch on the chart, photographers can use it as a reference to adjust the camera's white balance settings for the specific lighting conditions in which they are shooting.
Consistency: Color charts are especially important when working on projects that require consistent color reproduction across multiple shots or scenes. They help maintain color consistency throughout a shoot, even when lighting conditions change.
Post-Processing: After capturing images or video footage with a color chart, photographers and videographers can use specialized software to analyze the chart's colors and make necessary color corrections during post-processing. This ensures that the final output accurately represents the true colors of the subject.
Variety of Charts: There are different types of color calibration charts available, including Macbeth Color Checker charts, X-Rite ColorChecker Passport, and various other proprietary and custom charts. Each may have a unique set of colors and features.
Placement: When using a color chart, it's important to position it in the same lighting conditions as the subject. This ensures that both the subject and the chart are exposed to the same light, helping to achieve accurate color representation.
Calibration Workflow: Professionals often incorporate color calibration charts into their photography or videography workflow. This may involve capturing a reference image with the color chart at the beginning of a shoot and then using it as a reference for color correction during post-processing.
Video Production: Color charts are also widely used in video production to ensure consistent color reproduction across multiple camera angles and scenes. They are particularly important in professional video and film production.
Monitor Calibration: In addition to camera calibration, color charts can also be used for monitor calibration, ensuring that the colors displayed on a computer monitor accurately match the colors captured by the camera.
Color calibration charts are valuable tools for photographers and videographers who prioritize accurate and consistent color reproduction in their work. They play a crucial role in achieving high-quality and professional results, particularly in fields where color accuracy is paramount.

Testimonial Quotes
"If you do not have a target, I suggest you invest in the Datacolor SpyderCHECKR system. Probably the biggest advantage of the system is that camera calibration is not limited to Raw files, but can be applied to Jpegs, and very importantly, to video! For this reason alone, it would be highly recommended for photographers moving into video."
Lee Varis, Renowned Hollywood Photographer
“The SpyderCHECKR 24 is a highly portable, easy to use tool for creating very accurate camera calibrations. Nothing could be simpler than incorporating calibration results into your newly opened images in Lightroom or Photoshop. Once your calibration is complete, it merges painlessly into your workflow. User questions & answers
Question: | Is the grey background on the sheet the same grey color as a grey card |
Answer: | Not sure about the software download but basically take the color squares and have the talent hold it up next to the face. record or take a photo of it. Then in post, adjust the colors of the squares via vectorscope so they are correct. If you don't use a scope , maybe PS has a similar way to correct colors so they are true. Apologies if youve already figured it out. This link does a great job of walking you through it. https://youtu.be/RZS9u8vEN_0 |
Question: | At How much distance should i put this chart from camera to measure resolution |
Answer: | This card is not electronic and does not plug into a computer. If you take a photo of this card in a portrait session or to compare to the reproduced card colors on your monitor, you can judge the accuracy of your monitor or post processing. It is also useful to set white balance in post and to check tonality. I use it with Lightroom and Photoshop/Camera Raw. Sorry, I don't know how to apply it in Bridge. |
Question: | I bought a set. Does anyone know where I can find detailed instructions to go with the set |
Answer: | Yes, it's basically stiff heavy GSM paper/card. (I ordered two at the time myself when I read others reviews for wear & tear purposes in case they were overly flimsy, so far they have survived.) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with any software or manual |
Answer: | The set provises a standard to compare your work with. Take a picture of the standard and compare your results with the standard.I have a Canon DSLR. The manual has detailed instructions to calibrate the focusing of each different lens and registration in the body software, of the lens thereof. Very useful to me. Although the Canon and most any interchangeable lens focusing is already suitable for many I am more than fussy about my prints. The use of the "set" allows me to assure all but perfect focusing with the resulting improvement in quality. The detaled instructions for the uses of the set are onlline. I believe the search words are " calibration lens digital ". I know there are instructions for Canon, Nikon and perhaps others. |
Question: | is color checker video and Passport same thing |
Answer: | The short answer is no, we do not publish a data sheet for this chart. DGK Color Tools makes a variety of charts to meet the demands of our customers. Some have associated reference color values, some do not. For those with a deeper interest in color, here is the reason why: In order to market the DGK Digital Kolor Pro 16:9 chart at a price point our customers clearly prefer, the chart is produced on a digital offset press. This printing technique combines four colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black, commonly referred to as “CMYK”) to create the colors. Due to unavoidable variations in CMYK process inks and ink densities, the final colors cannot be precise enough for us to publish L*A*B* color values for the chart. DGK Color Tools sells a color chart with highly accurate reference color values, which you may find here: https://www.amazon.com/DGK-Color-Tools-DKC-Pro-Calibration/dp/B00DMA06AY. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Can i use this with movie studio? or does it only work with adobe premier |
Answer: | From DGK: So sorry. We are in the process of building a new website as our original site has been hacked. Please check back shortly. We will have the necessary downloads available on the new site. |
Question: | Is this thing really worth the money |
Answer: | I have no clue, sorry. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the color checker useless if you are just going to apply presets to the image anyway? And does it work on the entire session, shade and sunight |
Answer: | Apparently, there's a much bigger difference in camera Raw for Photoshop then there is in camera raw for elements. I did not know the answer so I downloaded a trial copy of elements 14 and found camera raw to be vastly different then the camera raw I'm able to use. "basically" my camera raw is Lightroom inside of Photoshop, the camera raw that I witnessed in elements 14 is missing two thirds of all of the controls and applications I can use. so unless there's another way to get a higher-end level of camera raw (I believe it is version 9.5.1.595; the version in elements was "for me" was 9.1.0.441) , then the answer I'm sorry to say is no it will not work. Which is a shame it can really cut down on the editing time. I use the subscription form of Photoshop about $ 10 a month |
Question: | Is the color chart Matt or glosy-Thanks Biob Acks |
Answer: | On the SpyderCHECKR24, a visual inspection will help. However if you use SpyderCHECKR with the 48 patches, you could use the FadeCheckr indicator |
Question: | For stills/video, do I need to buy both versions, or can I use this for both? what are the pros/cons of the video version? is one a superset |
Answer: | You have to buy software like Color Finale Pro 2 for FCPX, or others, for this to work in auto mode. Check out Youtube tutorials for this color checker. |
Question: | I am new to photography and want to invest in a color checker. do i need additional software? besides adobe lightroom and photoshop |
Answer: | Not exactly. The passport simply refers to a smaller-sized (pocket-sized) version of the Colorchecker. There is also a full-sized (roughly 8-1/2" by 11") of the Colorchecker. Both for both sizes there are also two different versions: one is tailored for video work (this one) and one is tailored for photography. By tailored I mean that the various targets are beneficial to that type of work. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i manually set luminance to 100 cd/m2 and white point to cie illuminant d55 with the x-rite i1display studio software |
Answer: | I own the photo version only. I use it for white balance generally, and color adjustment for shooting jpegs (rather than raw) that I don’t want to post process in photoshop or Lightroom much or not at all. But you could certainly use it for video too. The description of the video version talks a lot about multi-camera setups, where you’re shooting video with 2 or 3 cameras at the same time and want to make sure the colors are being recorded the same in all the cameras so you don’t have to do as much color correction in post production. If you’re shooting video with only one camera, there’s no reason why the photo version of this device wouldn’t be all you need. |
Question: | Is the idisplay studio compatible with dispcal |
Answer: | Hello, the x-Rite color checker comes with its own software which you need to install so that Lightroom and photoshop can recognize it and calibrate the colors accordingly. On the other hand, photoshop and Lightroom will cover 99.99% of your needs; being a beginner or a pro. |
Question: | Will this also create profiles for paper |
Answer: | Yes you can. |
Question: | I have a passport color checker. does/can this product utilize it |
Answer: | The SpyderCHECKR SCK100 comes with a tripod mont that allows you to attach the SpyderCHECKR on a tripod stand.
