14 best sony mega zoom cameras

Sony's line of "mega zoom" cameras refers to digital cameras that offer an extensive zoom range, typically well beyond what you'd find on traditional compact cameras. These cameras are also known as "bridge cameras" because they bridge the gap between compact point-and-shoot cameras and more advanced interchangeable lens systems. Here's what you should know about Sony mega zoom cameras:

  1. Zoom Range: Sony mega zoom cameras are characterized by their impressive optical zoom ranges. These cameras often feature zoom lenses with focal lengths that can extend from wide-angle to super-telephoto, providing a versatile range for various shooting scenarios.

  2. Image Sensors: These cameras typically come with relatively small image sensors, usually in the 1/2.3-inch range. While the sensor size is smaller than those found in interchangeable lens cameras, it's larger than what you'd find in standard compact cameras, resulting in better image quality and low-light performance.

  3. High Megapixel Counts: Sony's mega zoom cameras often come with high-resolution sensors, boasting a significant number of megapixels. This can lead to detailed and sharp images.

  4. Electronic Viewfinders (EVF): Some models feature an electronic viewfinder, which is a small display that you can use to frame your shots, providing a more traditional photography experience, especially in bright sunlight when the rear LCD may be challenging to use.

  5. LCD Screens: These cameras typically have large LCD screens on the back, which are handy for composing and reviewing shots. The screens are often tiltable or articulated, allowing for flexible shooting angles.

  6. Image Stabilization: Many Sony mega zoom cameras incorporate optical or digital image stabilization to counteract the effects of camera shake, particularly at the extreme telephoto end of the zoom range.

  7. Video Recording: Sony mega zoom cameras often support Full HD or 4K video recording, making them suitable for capturing high-quality videos as well.

  8. Advanced Features: These cameras may include advanced features such as manual shooting modes, RAW image capture, and various creative modes and filters.

  9. Wi-Fi and NFC Connectivity: Many models come with built-in Wi-Fi and NFC capabilities, enabling easy sharing and remote control of the camera using a smartphone or tablet.

  10. Compact and Portable: While these cameras offer impressive zoom capabilities, they are still compact and portable compared to larger DSLR or mirrorless camera systems.

Sony's mega zoom cameras are an excellent choice for photographers who want a single, versatile camera that covers a broad range of shooting scenarios. Whether you're traveling, wildlife watching, or just want a camera with a significant zoom range, Sony's mega zoom offerings provide an attractive balance between portability and functionality.

SONY RX10IV High Zoom Digital Camera

Featuring the world’s fastest1 AF acquisition time of 0.03 seconds2 and up to 24 fps4 continuous shooting with full AF/AE tracking, a 315 point phase-detection AF system as well as an exceptionally versatile 24-600mm3 F2.4-F4 ZEISS Vario Sonnar T lens, the new RX10 IV delivers an unmatched combination of mobility and speed for imaging enthusiasts and professionals looking for the ultimate ‘all-in-one’ solution.

World’s Fastest1 AF acquisition speed of 0.03 sec. 2

The RX10IV features the world’s fastest1 AF acquisition time thanks to its 1" Exmor RS stacked back illuminated CMOS sensor w/ DRAM and fast Hybrid AF system that combines the respective advantages of 315 phase-detection AF points - covering approximately 65% of the sensor - and contrast-detection AF to ultimately enable the camera to lock focus in as little as 0.03 seconds2. Subjects can be tracked and captured with precise detail and clarity within the extensive 24-600mm3 range.

Incredible Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor

This large 1” (1.0-type) back illuminated Exmor RS stacked image sensor with DRAM chip not only enhances efficiency and speed of A/D conversion through its stacked structure due to more circuit sections; it also realizes super-fast readout speed - thanks to a DRAM chip integrated into the sensor structure. Together with the BIONZ X processing engine and front-end LSI, it allows for stunning 20.1-megapixels at up to 24fps4 continuous shooting up to 249 frames5 with AF/AE tracking, blazingly fast shutter speed of up to 1/32000 sec., breathtaking 4k6 movie and super slow-motion HFR7 (High Frame Rate) movie clip recording of up to 960fps (40x), not to mention remarkable low-light low-noise capability.

ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-600mm3 ultra-zoom lens

The astonishing 24-600mm3 ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens features a large maximum aperture of F2.4-F4.0, helping it achieve outstanding image quality throughout the entire ultra-telephoto zoom range. Eight ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements including two ED aspherical and one Super ED lenses compensate for the chromatic aberration while the ZEISS T* Coating helps reduce flare and ghosting. This incredible lens also features built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization and a minimum focusing distance of 2.36 ft. with 0.49x maximum magnification for tele-macro photography.

24 fps4 up to 249 frames5 with AF/AE tracking

Designed to allow for high resolution, continuous shooting at high frame rates, the RX10 IV features a BIONZ X image processing engine with front-end LSI that achieves high-speed continuous shooting of 20.1-megapixel images at up to 24 fps4 with full AF/AE tracking, and an impressive buffer limit of up to 249 images5. With the significant improvements in processing power for the RX10 IV, EVF display lag during continuous shooting has been substantially reduced, allowing you to capture the decisive moment with ultimate confidence. Also, for convenience during image playback, continuously shot images can be displayed in groups instead of individual shots.

4K6 movie w/ direct pixel readout, no pixel binning and fast AF

RX10 IV offers the advantages of 4K6 (QFHD 3840 x 2160) movie recording, with its Fast Hybrid AF system, realizing fast and accurate focusing speed and AF tracking for video. In 4K6 mode, the new RX10 IV utilizes full pixel readout without pixel binning, capturing approximately 1.7x more information than is required for 4K6 movie output ensuring that all the finest details are captured accurately. Utilizing the XAVC S9 codec to record video at a high data rates, users have the option of shooting at either 24p or 30p in 4K6 mode up to 100mpbs, or in frame rates of up to 120p in Full HD mode.

Super-speed Anti-Distortion Shutter

The super-speed Anti-Distortion Shutter has a maximum shutter speed of up to 1/32000 second, which minimizes the “rolling shutter” effect commonly experienced with fast moving subjects. This blazingly fast shutter speed also allows the camera to capture sharp, crystal clear images with a wide open aperture in bright conditions. Shooting at wide aperture with fast shutter speed allows photographers and videographers to capture beautiful content with sharply focused subjects and defocused backgrounds under some of the most difficult, bright lighting conditions.

High-density Tracking AF technology.

For the first time on a RX-series camera, advanced high-density tracking AF technology - which had only been previously available in a select few of Sony’s acclaimed line of α interchangeable lens cameras - concentrates AF points around a subject to improve tracking and focus accuracy, allowing even the most unpredictable subjects including fast-moving athletes and birds in flight to be captured with ease.

Optical SteadyShot image stabilization

The built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to reduce image blur caused from camera shake, equivalent to approximate 4.5 stops shutter speed improvement, which is especially handy at high magnification when the lens is fully extended to 600mm, but equally as good throughout the entire zoom range.

Tele-macro up to 600mm3 as close as 2.36 ft.

With a minimum focusing distance of 2.36 ft (72 cm) and 0.49x maximum magnification at a fully extended 600mm3, the ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-600mm3 F2.4-F4.0 lens is capable of producing amazingly detailed tele-macro images.

Super slow-motion movie HFR7 (High frame rate)

See the unseen with super slow-motion HFR7 (High Frame Rate). The RX10 IV can capture super slow motion movie clips at up to 40x slower than real time. You can chose from 960fps, 480fps or 240fps4 capture rates to playback at 1920 x 1080, in either 60p, 30p or 24p. Choose between 'quality priority' (4 sec. recording) and 'shoot time priority' (7 sec. recording). There’s also an option to set 'start trigger', 'end trigger' or 'end trigger half”'which will start capturing movie before, after or before and after you press the movie rec. button so you can time those split-second moments perfectly.

Designed for a pro-video workflow

The RX10 IV has a variety of including Picture Profile, S-Log3/S-Gamut3, Gamma Display Assist, Proxy recording, Time Code / User Bit and more, as well as input for external microphone via MI (multi-interface) shoe or mic jack and output for headphone monitoring. User questions & answers

Question: I purchased a Fuji Finepix S4300 that gives me dark and yellowed photos when taken indoors. How does the Sony DSCW830/B rate for taking photos inside of an office
Answer: The pictures are great! They come out nice, whether taken outdoors or indoors. I love that the camera can take panoramic pictures. My son and daughter have similar Sony cameras that they have had for awhile so I bought one because they recommended it.
Question: How long of a lag time is there between shots? Does this camera have something like a burst mode; taking a rapid series of shots
Answer: It does have a "burst mode"; however, it is not as you would expect it to be. It is a bit slower than the traditional DSLR/SLR. Thus far, as per my usage, it has been satisfactory. Suffice it to say that if you are looking to capture a hummingbird in perfect detail and in multiple shots, this camera will fall just a bit short.
Question: Does the camera come with a memory card
Answer: No. According to the help guide, "Using internal memory: The camera has approximately 27 MB of internal memory." You can purchase other media cards to store data on as well.
Question: I am looking for something for my 80 + Mother so it needs to be simple, would this camera work for her
Answer: Frankly, I would not recommend it. I bought it to replace an earlier Sony digital camera I had, which was truly a "point and shoot"- always gave great pictures. This one has an impressive list of features (I never use 99% of them) but I'm still having trouble simply "taking pictures". It's possible that it might work fine with the right settings, but I haven't had success. Example of the complexity- I printed out (from the online manual) the definitions of all the icons that can appear on the camera's screen- it's about four pages worth (!) of tiny nondescript icons which no "normal" person could memorize. Yeah, I'm old (75) and old-school, but I suspect your mom might not get satisfaction from this camera.

User questions & answers

Question: I love the camera, but I cannot get it to capture still photos while recording a movie. Can somebody tell me how to do it
Answer: Hello Harry, Please explain what you mean you cannot get still shots while recording. Do you want the camera to display still photos when you take them and you choose when to continue taking video. Or you cannot find your still photos after you take them, you only see the video. As I explained, possibly not clearly, when you are recording a video and you press the shutter button to take a photo, the camera do not interupt your video recording to display the picture. after completing your video you press the play/review button and then you will see the photos and the video when going in reverse order. if you review from begining you will see video first then your pictures.
Question: I want to make sure I have everything I need to start shooting on day one. What accessories come in the box with the camera
Answer: I would suggest at least ordering 55-mm UV filter (acts as lense protector so you should never have to wipe/clean the coatings on your expensive lense or worry about scratches). May want to consider a circular polarizing lens (linear polarizers supposedly don't work on sensor cameras). You will also want to have an SD, SDHC, or SDXC UHS-I (letter I vs an UHS-II interface) memory card that is at least Class 10 (C with a 10 in it), UHS-1 (number 1) or UHS-3 speed class which is U with a 1 or 3 in it. I suggest at least 16 GB, with 32 GB being better. I like videos, so I got 64 GB. A case to protect your camera would be nice. I also favor a better shoulder strap and a hand strap grip. One end of the hand strap should screw into the tripod mount and supply its own tripod mount hole to allow mounting to tripod without removing the strap.
Question: can you use filters with this camera and if so what size does it take
Answer: You can use 55mm filters with the Sony HX400V
Question: can the camera be operated remotly with the smartphone for to take photos and make focus with wifi or another wireless methods
Answer: Yes this camera can be operated remotely with smartphones. You can take the picture and zoom in and out. You can see the subject being photographed on the phone. It updates every 2 seconds.

User questions & answers

Question: It looks like the camera doesn't come with a memory stick? What stick would you suggest, that processes pictures fast
Answer: forget the MEMORY STIck! Go with the sandisk 32 Micro SD and get a GOOD reader(Sandisk or Lexar 35 bucks or so). I think I have the sandisk 64's in the camera.
Question: Hello, I am hoping I can use my cell phone to remotely take pictures and view. Does this have fish eye view along with panorama? Thx
Answer: Hi. This camera does allow you to take photos remotely from your smart phone (IOS for sure) and is pretty easy to setup. It also has a fish eye mode not quite sure about the panorama however. Hope this helps. Happy shootingAlexanderlamar.com
Question: eviews say the camera works with wifi using Android OS devices. But I haven't read any references to iOS; Apple devices. Does it work with iOS too
Answer: Sony does not specifically mention iOS devices. We would advise contacting Sony directly at 800-222-7669.
Question: Does this camera have a 1/4-20 tripod screw at the bottom
Answer: It has a threaded receptacle that my tripod fits. Looks like 1/4 20 but I don't have a 1/4 20 bolt handy to test with.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you get an external charger to charge the battery, or can you only charge the battery via USB while it is in the camera
Answer: Surprised someone is still asking about this and not really sure what you mean but...If you mean how many hours I ran it or its reliability I used it hundreds of hours over years and many drops and bangs and last I checked it still worked. If you mean battery life I think it was about 30 hours maybe 40 with radio or no song skipping. It was a great player and I using it heavily without fail through most of the ipod revolution. It wasn't until I got my ipod classic 4th gen 80 gig that I retired the sony. The ipod for double the price or so went from 120 songs to thousands. Fully shockproof, smaller more pocketable and better rechargable battery. The sony may have lasted longer though technologically as it was only a few years before I went to streaming through pandora. Still use the ipod where there is no data. Even then I miss directory forward/ back buttons of the sony. Ipod jog wheels suck especially when driving.
Question: How long does it take to charge the battery
Answer: are you referring to "rewritable" CDs as in a CD you created? Yes, it does play them
Question: How superior would you say this is compared to a 14mp camera? (I currently have an Olympus
Answer: I honestly don't know. The batteries in this unit last for a long time and I never needed one. I can go through about 100 cd s on one change of batteries. That is a guess because it could be more.
Question: What are the included items
Answer: It has an ear phone port and that's what I use on my phone to connect to the car Aux port.

User questions & answers

Question: For this bundle, the case has two side clips but is their a strap included
Answer: Two side clips on the camera case have small straps and are only for the zippers to make them easy to pull. The longer strap included is for the camera. I leave that one hanging out through the two closed zippers. That seems to work. I wish the darn thing had a manual, or it would be easy to find on the internet. Do these people think we are all young geniuses??
Question: Would I be able to connect this camera to my Samsung android tablet, for Instagram
Answer: I think so, but I have had a lot of trouble with this camera since I bought it. Could be just this particular camera and not the entire model. I get a weird colored box on part of some of my photos which can only be seen when I download from the camera and not in the viewfinder. I sent it out for repair and the problem persists I may have got a lemon.
Question: Does it have a viewfinder
Answer: No, the WX350 does not have a viewfinder.

Exmor R and BIONZ X deliver superb image quality

An 18.2 megapixel (effective) back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor — works with the advanced BIONZ X image-processing system to deliver superb image quality, even for fine textures and details. With a range of ISO80-6400 (expanded), even dimly lit scenes can be beautifully shot, while color-reproduction improvements produce natural-looking skin tones.

Stunning 4K video

Capture stunning 4K3 video (QFHD, 3840 x 2160 pixels) with full sensor pixel readout and no pixel binning - collecting approximately 1.6x as much information as is required. This oversampling effect results in images of outstanding resolution with reduced moire and jaggies. The HX99 is also capable of shooting high-frame rate HD video at up to 120 fps to produce impressive slow-motion sequences during editing.

3 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) Continuous recording time is approx. 5 minutes, and may vary with recording environment. Class 10 or higher micro SDHC/SDXC memory card is required to record movies in the XAVC S format. UHS-I (U3) is also required for recording at 100Mbps

Fast Intelligent AF to capture decisive moments

The HX99 adopts Fast Intelligent AF using high-speed, highly accurate contrast-detection autofocus. It achieves focus by minimizing wasted lens motion, predicting AF range and accelerating the lens drive, improving response so you can capture even more fleeting moments.

Control ring for advanced photography

The convenient lens-mounted control ring allows you to operate pro-style manual controls such as manual focus, step zooming or selecting shutter speed, aperture, and more for added creative control — so there’s no need to compromise your vision because of the camera’s compact size. The HX99 also features a customizable ‘My Menu’ option for instant recall of up to 30 different settings.

Selfie-ready 180° Tiltable 3" LCD

The high-resolution 3.0-inch type screen with tilt capability is perfect for taking selfies and framing low-angle shots. You can use it in various shooting positions for greater flexibility in capturing creative compositions.

Touch Focus and Shutter

With Touch Focus you can simply touch the LCD at the point of the image you want to focus on, for both still and video capture, so you can intuitively focus on subjects even at the edge of the frame without reframing. The shutter can also be operated by touching the LCD screen. When using the electronic viewfinder, the LCD can be used as a Touch Pad AF to shift focus smoothly and easily, simply by sliding your finger across the LCD screen.

10 fps4 with fast AF

During still photography, the HX99 can acquire focus in as little as 0.09 seconds, and can shoot continuously at up to 10 fps4 for up to 155 shots5. Continuous-shot images can also be displayed, deleted and protected in groups.

User questions & answers

Question: I tried recording and found it shuts off after about 30 minutes. Anybody know if it will record longer
Answer: This is a camera, not a video camera. I kept asking myself the same question as I was using my Sony DSC-HX400V to record our pastor's sermons on Sunday mornings. Did some digging and found in the operating manual that this camera will only record 29 minutes at a time. If you are wanting or needing to record any longer you will need to restart the video or invest in a decent video recorder. A good camcorder can be bought fairly cheaply these days.
Question: This bundle items are extra from Sony's original packaging or anything from the original packaging items are been replaced with bundle items
Answer: The bundle items are in addition to the Sony original package.
Question: Is there a way to get Sony's extra protection for this camera? Like an extended warranty
Answer: I don't know. Mine is 4 years old and works fine.
Question: Can you add filters in your bundle ? This will make your bundle perfect one. I will be the first one to buy that. thanks
Answer: I purchased filters from Amazon separately from the bundle
