Sony Alpha FE 12-24mm F4 G Ultra Wide-angle Zoom Lens
Get a fresh dynamic perspective with Sony’s widest full-frame E-mount lens*. Its ultra-wide 12-24mm range features cutting-edge refinements for stunning corner-to-corner G Lens resolution at all apertures, while quiet, fast, precise autofocus make it ideal for movies as well as stills. It is an excellent choice for landscapes and architecture, and is compact, lightweight, and mobile so it can go wherever the great shots are without slowing you down.
Dynamic perspectives in an ultra wide-angle zoom
With a zoom range extending from 12mm to 24mm, the ultra wide-angle FE 12-24mm F4 G zoom offers the widest perspectives in the full-frame E-mount lens lineup. Optical aberrations that commonly detract from the performance of wide-angle designs have been effectively controlled, achieving excellent resolution throughout the image area. Despite its impressive performance, this lens is remarkably lightweight, compact, and mobile, offering quality and capabilities that will satisfy professionals' and enthusiasts’ needs for wider fields of view when photographing landscapes, architecture, and more.
Aspherical lens elements
Four aspherical elements in a new optical design effectively suppress aberrations that commonly occur in wide-angle lenses, achieving impressively high resolution that fully satisfies expectations for the G Lens brand. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and ultra-wide angles, and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight.
Constant F4 max aperture
Constant F4 max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field regardless of the focal range to which you zoom. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the areas out of the focal plane appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background is enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens.
7-blade circular aperture contributes to gorgeous bokeh
When changing your aperture to defocus the background, light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background is enhanced with the 7-blade circular aperture used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing, polygonal-shaped defocused points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.
Direct Drive Supersonic Wave Motor (DDSSM)
High-resolution cameras demand absolute focus precision. A floating mechanism driven by a DDSSM (Direct Drive Super Sonic Wave Motor) actuator maintains outstanding resolution from infinity to close focus for both stills and movies. DDSSM has the capability to position the large, heavy optical assemblies required by large-aperture lenses with pinpoint precision, offering accurate, fast and quiet autofocus. Manual focus response is natural and intuitive with the DDSSM system.
Nano AR Coating
Sony’s original Nano AR Coating technology minimizes flare and ghosting by suppressing internal reflections and maintaining clarity, even in difficult outdoor lighting conditions, for dynamic range that achieves lifelike detail and gradation with advanced camera sensors. This precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, more so than with lenses that use coatings with an irregular nano-structure. The reflection suppression characteristic of the Nano AR Coating is superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.
Dust and moisture resistant1 for robust reliability
Sony’s standard lens sealing is augmented by a lens mount seal that maximizes resistance to dust and moisture for reliable operation in challenging environmental conditions1. Additional details, like rubberized rings that are easy to operate in low temperatures, a customizable focus hold button and a hood lock button, all add up to professional control and convenience.
Super ED and ED glass minimize chromatic aberration
One Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and three ED glass elements control chromatic aberration for excellent sharpness from image center to periphery. Both Super ED and ED glass elements correct for axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration, which affect resolution and bokeh, while leaving precisely rendered edges with no fringing or unnatural coloration.
Instant auto/manual focus selection
Instantly switch between auto and manual focus via an AF/MF switch on the side of the lens. This makes operation faster and easier as you let the camera and lens focus for you, or decide to take control and manually focus on the precise point you chose.
Focus hold button
The focus hold button not only performs its primary function to lock focus when recomposing, but can be customized to a number of other functions depending on your needs. In addition to Focus Hold, custom functions include: Grid Lines, Eye AF, AF On, Aperture Preview, Shot Result Preview or Bright Monitoring.
Internal Focus maintains lens dimensions
Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change while focusing. This is especially useful when using the lens for video with a matte box.
Fluorine front-element coating
The front lens element features a fluorine coating that helps to prevent dirt and fingerprints from sticking, and makes it easier to wipe dirt and fingerprints away if they become attached to the lens surface. This is a lens that can be used with confidence in a variety of challenging outdoor conditions.

User questions & answers
Question: | Amazon wants me to wait for another 8 weeks on top of the 8 weeks (from 01/09/19) that they have previously estimated, any ideas what is the hold up |
Answer: | This is an APS-C Lens. It will work without adapter, but will need to be in APS-C/Super 35 mode |
Question: | What would the focal length be if I were to use this on the Sony a |
Answer: | You need to read tripod specs to find the camera + lens weight the tripod can support. The Sony A6500 with A70-350 lens is under 3 pounds. Most, if not all, tripods can hold that weight. However, you need to consider many other factors when chooging a tripod. You might want to google how to choose a tripod/head. You need to look at load capacity, height, weight, folded length, ball heads, graphite, carbon fiber or aluminum, type of leg locks, pan & tilt range, with or without center column, your budget, etc.. Depending on what kinds of conditions or subjects you shoot, some of these factors may not be at all important to you. But you don't want to pay extra for features you don't want or need. I probably use a tripod less than 5% of the time. I don't do landscape and If I eliminated the few times a year that I shoot night skies or do light painting, I would not need or use a tripod. |
Question: | Hey guys , can some of you tell us when you placed the order and how long you have waited , want to eyeball when ill get mine . Placed an order Jan |
Answer: | Hi, no it will not. |
Question: | Any experience comparing this with the Zeiss Batis |
Answer: | Hello. The Sony 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G Lens is compatible with the Sony a6600. Filter diameter is 67mm. |

An 11-blade circular aperture mechanism creates beautiful bokeh that is a hallmark of the G Master series. Fast focusing is attained through the DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focus drive system. This lens sports class-leading size and weight, providing great handling and mobility.
Compact G Master wide prime lens w/ stunning wide-open resolution
The FE 24mm F1.4 GM realizes consistently high resolution across the entire frame and delivers soft and natural bokeh - a signature feature of Sony’s G Master lens series. It also boasts a new optical design comprised of 10 groups with 13 elements, including two XA (extreme aspherical) and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements. The incorporation of two XA elements ensures that point light sources can be accurately reproduced, making the FE 24mm F1.4 GM a compelling proposition for astrophotography. For impressive clarity, Sony’s unique Nano AR Coating is applied to reduce lens flare and ghosting, even in landscape shots where the position of the sun can be problematic with a normal lens.
F1.4 max aperture
The F1.4 max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field, allowing you to isolate your subject from the foreground and background with amazing light gathering capabilities when shooting wide open. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the areas out of the focal plane appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background is enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens.
11-blade circular aperture contributes to gorgeous bokeh
The 11-blade circular aperture maximizes the beauty of this large-aperture prime-lens, contributing to impressive images in which the subject stands out against a smoothly defocused foreground and background, as well as perfectly round points of defocused light. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides that create unappealing, polygonal-shaped defocused points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.
Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) for fast, quiet, precise focusing
The 24mm F1.4 GM lens supports hybrid autofocus for both contrast and focal-plane phase detection AF. It has a high-precision Direct Drive Super Sonic Motor (DDSSM) system that ensures exceptionally fast, quiet and accurate AF performance. The precision internal focus mechanism aids in AF speed by moving only the middle groups of the optical system and effectively minimizing focus breathing, while keeping the lens size compact and lightweight. In addition to being the ideal wide prime lens for stills, it is also exceptionally suited for video with a linear motor that takes on the vital role of ‘wobbling’ to providing high-speed actuation for the contrast AF detection system, for smooth, continuous AF.
Two XA (Extreme Aspherical) lens element
The 24mm F1.4 GM employs two XA (Extreme Aspherical) lens element, one of which is the front lens. This large-diameter front XA lens element features a new optical design, maximizing the advantages of the short mirrorless camera flange distance, and effectively suppresses various aberrations, especially the peripheral area in the frame and sagittal flare. Two XA elements compensate for coma, field curvature, and astigmatism that can be problems with wide-angle large-aperture optics. This also contributes to the compact and lightweight design.
Nano AR coating suppresses reflections, flare and ghosting
Sony’s original Nano AR Coating technology minimizes flare and ghosting, for dynamic range that achieves lifelike detail and gradation with advanced camera sensors. This precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than with lenses that use coatings with an irregular nano-structure. The reflection suppression characteristic of the Nano AR Coating is superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.
Compact, lightweight design
This remarkably compact and lightweight lens weighs in at only 15.7oz (445g) with smallest in class dimensions of 3” (75.4mm) diameter and 3-3/4” (92.4mm) in length. It’s compact, lightweight design enhances portability and mobility thanks to the combination of optical design utilizing two XA elements and the newly developed DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) AF system.
Manual aperture ring w/ selectable on/off click for stills or movie
A responsive manual aperture ring offers positive action that will satisfy professional photographers and moviemakers alike. The aperture ring click stops can be switched on or off as required. “Off” is the preferred setting for moviemaking since it results in the least aperture operation noise. When “On” the ring provides tactile feedback that is useful when shooting stills.
Focus hold button, programmable for multiple functions
The focus hold button not only performs its primary function to lock focus when recomposing, but can be customized to a number of other functions depending on your needs. In addition to Focus Hold, these custom functions include: Eye AF, AF On, Aperture Preview, Shot Result Preview or Bright Monitoring.
Dust and moisture resistant for robust reliability
The dust and moisture resistance design makes this lens appropriate for heavy-duty outdoor use, especially when combined with a camera that employs weather resistant measures.
Astrophotography Sagittal flare suppression
Sagittal flare is a phenomenon that results in an unnatural spreading of point light sources that appears somewhat like a bird spreading its wings and becomes more pronounced towards the image periphery. It is most common in large-aperture lenses. The 24mm F1.4 GM incorporates a new optical design, including two XA lens elements, to effectively suppress and correct for sagittal flare, making this lens ideal for night sky and astrophotography.
Product description
Super wide-angle zoom lenses are ideal for taking photos of sweeping landscapes and producing striking images with emphasized perspective. For mid- to high-level users who seek a wider minimum focal length than offered by standard wideangle zoom lenses, the SEL-1018 is the ideal choice. NOTE:"35 mm equivalent focal length (APS-C)" and "Angle of View (APS-C)" are with interchangeable lens digital camera incorporating APS-C type image sensors. This super wide-angle zoom lens is perfect for taking photos of sweeping landscapes and producing striking images with emphasized perspective. Features incluse a constant maximum aperture of F4 and built-in Optical SteadyShot (OSS) image stabilization. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result. As focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower color quality, and lower resolution. ED glass dramatically reduces chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings. Super ED glass provides enhanced compensation for chromatic aberration. Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight. Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements are an evolved variant, featuring an extremely high thickness ratio between the center and periphery. AA elements are exceedingly difficult to produce, relying on the most advanced molding technology to consistently and precisely achieve the required shape and surface accuracy, resulting in significantly improved image accuracy and quality. The distance encoder plays an integral part in ADI flash metering, which delivers high precision flash metering that is unaffected by the reflectance of subjects or backgrounds. The distance encoder is a lens component that directly detects the position of the focusing mechanism, and sends a signal to the CPU in order to measure distance to the subject. During flash photography, this data is very useful in calculating how much flash output is appropriate to the scene. Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills. Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter. 2012 Sony Electronics All rights reserved. User questions & answers
Question: | F4 or f2.8? What is the main difference |
Answer: | Great and popular lens... supply can't keep up with the demand. I waited nearly 3 months to get my copy. Ordered it early Dec. 2018 |
Question: | What is better f4 or this one |
Answer: | Technically the focal length is still 24mm. The lens does not change when mounted on a full frame or apsc camera. What is different is the field of view. The a6500 + 24mm will view the full frame equivalent of a 36mm lens. This is not the same as using say the 35mm f1.8 OSS on the a6500. This would have the effective equivalent of 52.5mm on full frame. The focal length number on a lens whether it is made for full frame or aps is the designed length. But the effective field of view will be different depending on what sensor it is mounted to. |
Question: | Is there a fish eye effect around the edges at 16mm? I am also looking at Zeiss Batis 18mm which is wide and has little fish eye effect |
Answer: | Ordered mine in MAY 2019 and received it SEP 2019. |
Question: | Would this lens work well for portraits? or is this more inclined for landscape? I am debating between this lens or the new 24-105mm G |
Answer: | Very similar. The Zeiss has their patented T* coating so you get a little bit warmer color, and the Zeiss is f/2 - f/22. The Sony has a little bit more natural color reproduction, 11 blade circular aperture, assignable function button, auto/manual focus switch, aperture ring with de-click option for smooth aperture transition (great for video) and the aperture range is f/1.8 - f/16. Both are excellent lenses. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It says 75 deg FoV on fullframe. Is that 75 deg horizontal or diagonal |
Answer: | Diagonal at 28mm https://www.nikonians.org/reviews/fov-tables |
Question: | Hello all, Is this lens great for landscape photography for a6000, despite it being 42mm on aps-c |
Answer: | Honestly I bought this for portraits but learned that it's such a great lens for landscapes too. I've had the lenses on my a6000 for about 2 months now and I have gotten so many great images of the city and lakes here in NY that I now am rethinking the purpose i bought it for. It's also a very good lend me for macro shots or even layer shots. |
Question: | I cant decide between this and and the emount 35mm. they are same price i have a6000. can e lenses fit on full frame if i "upgrade" to full later on |
Answer: | The SEL28F20 is designed for full-frame cameras, the SEL35F18 is designed for crop-sensor cameras like the a6000. You can use lenses designed for full-frame cameras on crop-sensor bodies and vice versa but your results will vary. There are plenty of articles online that explain these shortcomings in further detail but you are welcome to call us at 1-800-991-3350 to discuss. Please note that with Black Friday coming next week, prices on equipment like this will likely drop due to manufacturer instant rebates so you may want to hold off on purchasing anything. |
Question: | How is the performance of this lense on an A6000? I was considering getting one and then upgrading to an A7 body later |
Answer: | I own this lens and use on the a6500. It has outstanding sharpness. The 28mm has a field of view of 42mm on the crop sensor a6000 series which makes it an excellent normal prime lens. I use it for street photography and for architecture and landscape photography. Most of the issues with the lens occur at the edges on full frame cameras. But on the crop sensor the edges are not used, so the issues with distortion are not seen on the a6000 cameras. I highly recommend this over the Sony 35mm 1.8 lens. It is a great lens and excellent value. |

20mm F2.8 Prime Lens Not only will the 20mm (30mm in 35mm full-frame format) focal length and F2.8 maximum aperture appeal to experienced photographers, but the outstanding resolution of this lens will satisfy their most stringent image quality requirements as well. Three aspheric elements help to achieve superb contrast and resolution right out to the image edges, while simultaneously enabling a compact 20.4 mm-thick pancake design that makes for a portable combination with compact E-mount cameras. Only the rear groups of the optical system move to focus the lens, which allows for speedy AF operation and a shorter minimum focusing distance. Since the front of the lens does not rotate, operability is improved when shooting with a polarizing filter attached. 2013 Sony Electronics All rights reserved. User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have Optical Stabilisation |
Answer: | All tanks under 40 pound are required to have the OPD valves, so they will have the same connector. The only issue may be the reach of the hose inside for the shorter tank. Also note, this will burn 2 pounds of gas in 3 hours on high, so a 5 pound tank may only last 8 hours at best on high. That's partly why many like the 20 pound tank size so it lasts much longer on one fill (as well as those common tanks being available for $30 versus 5 pound ones costing $50). Also note, only 1 pound tanks are allowed indoors by fire codes, so even the 5 pound isn't allowed legally (yet no one is stopping you from doing as you wish). |
Question: | How much flatter is this one vs the 16mm |
Answer: | Top O' the morn to you Thomas. The type of connection for Mr. Heater will be the same as shown in the video. A hard plastic connection. I also added the DozyAnt Propane Tank Guage with the same type of connection. Mr. Heater works great so far. I use it to heat my patio. Hope this Helps. Gato. |
Question: | What's the equivalent focus length in APS-C frame |
Answer: | I apologize I do not understand the meaning can this unit be used above 7000 all I can tell you is in a room approximately 500 foot and under it will definitely be comfortable |
Question: | Why did sony omit oss image stability on this lens? with oss the speed can be reduced on a kit lenses to accomplish 20mm @ f |
Answer: | It's a very nice fan, but it does not have a timer. |
