11 best optical zoom digital cameras
Optical zoom in digital cameras refers to the ability of the camera lens to magnify the image of distant objects without sacrificing image quality. It works by physically adjusting the lens elements to zoom in or out. This is different from digital zoom, which simply enlarges a portion of the image, leading to a loss in quality.
Here are some key points about optical zoom digital cameras:
Zoom Range: Optical zoom is measured in terms of a ratio (e.g., 3x, 5x, 10x), which indicates how much closer the camera can bring a subject. For example, a 3x zoom means the subject can be brought three times closer compared to the widest setting.
Quality: Optical zoom maintains image quality because it actually brings the subject closer by adjusting the lens elements. This means the camera captures more detail.
Use in Photography: Optical zoom is particularly useful in situations where you cannot physically get closer to your subject, like wildlife photography, sports events, or capturing details in architecture.
Compact and Bridge Cameras: Point and shoot digital cameras often have optical zoom capabilities. Some higher-end point-and-shoot cameras may have powerful optical zooms, ranging from 10x to 50x or more.
Bridge Cameras: These are a category of cameras that bridge the gap between compact point-and-shoots and DSLRs. They often have very powerful optical zooms, making them versatile for various photography needs.
Stabilization: Optical zoom can magnify even small movements, leading to shaky images. Many cameras come with image stabilization technology to counteract this, allowing for sharper shots.
Aperture: As you zoom in, the aperture of the lens may change. This affects the amount of light that reaches the sensor and can influence your exposure settings.
Digital Camera Advancements: Over time, digital cameras have seen improvements in their optical zoom capabilities. Manufacturers have developed more sophisticated lens designs and mechanisms.
Limitations: While optical zoom is highly beneficial, it does have limitations. Extremely high levels of optical zoom can sometimes lead to issues like reduced low light performance, larger and heavier lenses, and higher costs.
Consider Your Needs: When choosing a camera with optical zoom, consider your specific photography needs. If you're into wildlife or sports photography, a camera with a substantial optical zoom might be a priority.
Remember, it's always important to research and consider various models and their specifications before making a purchase. This way, you can ensure the camera you choose meets your specific requirements.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use it to do a pan picture |
Answer: | Panoramic shooting is not mentioned in the manual, and there does not appear to be a selection in the camera's functions to achieve it. You can probably still get that result with third-party external software on a PC by taking the sequence of shots to stitch together, but Canon does not provide it. |
Question: | Can someone verify that Wi-fi feature/ app supports this camera? I want this feature specifically and 2 comments say it doesn't |
Answer: | Just received mine yesterday 1/24/18. I downloaded the Canon app off of Google app store on to my smart phone. WiFi worked just fine... was able to operate my camera remotely thru my phone with the app. Downloaded pictures to phone and then to pc. Pc found wireless network for phone. Fyi. Amazon says screen is 5". Unless my visual capabilities are way off. No way it's 5" ... maybe 3 |
Question: | How much memory does this camera have |
Answer: | None. You will need to provide an SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card for this camera. Either one you already own or one you've purchased. |
Question: | hello does this camera come with a battery charger |
Answer: | Yes it does come with a battery charger |

User questions & answers
Question: | I love the camera, but I cannot get it to capture still photos while recording a movie. Can somebody tell me how to do it |
Answer: | Hello Harry, Please explain what you mean you cannot get still shots while recording. Do you want the camera to display still photos when you take them and you choose when to continue taking video. Or you cannot find your still photos after you take them, you only see the video. As I explained, possibly not clearly, when you are recording a video and you press the shutter button to take a photo, the camera do not interupt your video recording to display the picture. after completing your video you press the play/review button and then you will see the photos and the video when going in reverse order. if you review from begining you will see video first then your pictures. |
Question: | I want to make sure I have everything I need to start shooting on day one. What accessories come in the box with the camera |
Answer: | I would suggest at least ordering 55-mm UV filter (acts as lense protector so you should never have to wipe/clean the coatings on your expensive lense or worry about scratches). May want to consider a circular polarizing lens (linear polarizers supposedly don't work on sensor cameras). You will also want to have an SD, SDHC, or SDXC UHS-I (letter I vs an UHS-II interface) memory card that is at least Class 10 (C with a 10 in it), UHS-1 (number 1) or UHS-3 speed class which is U with a 1 or 3 in it. I suggest at least 16 GB, with 32 GB being better. I like videos, so I got 64 GB. A case to protect your camera would be nice. I also favor a better shoulder strap and a hand strap grip. One end of the hand strap should screw into the tripod mount and supply its own tripod mount hole to allow mounting to tripod without removing the strap. |
Question: | can you use filters with this camera and if so what size does it take |
Answer: | You can use 55mm filters with the Sony HX400V |
Question: | can the camera be operated remotly with the smartphone for to take photos and make focus with wifi or another wireless methods |
Answer: | Yes this camera can be operated remotely with smartphones. You can take the picture and zoom in and out. You can see the subject being photographed on the phone. It updates every 2 seconds. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i backup to pc using usb cable? do i need dedicated cable? tried others since none was included with camera and they didn't work |
Answer: | Thank you for your time. You can use a USB cable to download the images to your computer. Please use a USB cable equipped with a Micro-B plug for connecting to the camera and a Type-A plug for connecting to the computer.* A genuine Canon accessory is also available (Interface Cable IFC-600PCU). |
Question: | Does it take batteries |
Answer: | It takes one Canon battery that comes with the camera as well as a battery charger. |
Question: | What is the most negative thing about this camera |
Answer: | I honestly can't think of anything. It's small and lightweight, fits in a pocket. Takes gorgeous photos and really nice video. Only thing I can think is that you will need a decent sized storage card so that's an investment, but not a big deal. Also highly, highly recommend buying an extra battery. Again an investment but so worth it. We took this camera on a trip of a lifetime to Alaska and the photos are so great; video too...love the special effects setting. Makes me look like a pro photographer! |
Question: | Are the camera dimensions correct? 2.3 inches x 6.3 inches x 5.7 inches. It doesn't look like it would be that large |
Answer: | It is not. I raised this very question when trying to decide what camera to buy. Why they would list the length at 5.7 inches is a mystery. That would make the stupid thing HUGE! Anyway, the ACTUAL dimensions are (in inches): 2.25 x 1.0 (excluding extended lens) x 3.75. I know these dimensions are accurate, because I'm sitting here with the camera in my hands, and I just measured with a ruler! Haven't had it long, but it seems like a great little camera so far. Takes really nice images. One caveat: The camera does NOT come with any kind of connector cable (apparently, the assumption is that you'll use Wi-Fi exclusively to move pix around), so if you want to go USB (or HTML) you'll need to buy the appropriate wire.Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i connect this camera to my computer with a usb |
Answer: | I have just purchased two of these (Elph 180). The first thing I noticed is that Canon has not improved the access door (battery/ sd card slot) in the many years since I had my first point& shoot Canon. (I have a canon rebel too - different story) The reason I am telling you this is that I urge you to buy a cable to download your shots, and clear the SD card from your camera. Every time you open and shut this little door, the weaker it becomes. Eventually you will be forced to tape the door shut to use the camera. I did this for years because I loved the camera. Finally I just got tired of it and bought the rebel. If the only time you have to open the door is to charge the battery, you will extend the usable life of the door HUGELY. As with most technology today, it's longevity depends on its weakest point. One of the two I purchased is for a 12 yr. old - I bought cables for both of us. My opinion: It's worth it because Canon still makes the best lenses. |
Question: | Does this have an automatic shutoff If I forget to turn it off |
Answer: | I don`t think so. But you`ll know if it`s on. When it`s on, the lens moves way out. When it`s off, it retracts, so the camera is flat. It would be very hard to forget to turn the camera off, or forget you left it on. |
Question: | Do you have to remove the battery from the camera in order to charge it |
Answer: | Does this camera come with a charger? It says it comes with a rechargeable battery but it isn’t saying anything about a charger. And from looking at other people’s comments I’m thinking it doesn’t come with a charger. So if not then what are you suppose to do cause it’s not regular batteries it’s the rectangle flat battery |
Question: | I notice the usb cable has to be purchased separately. does this camera require any special type of usb cable |
Answer: | The camera uses sd memory, so you dont need usb cable if your computer has a sd slot |
Question: | what kind of stand/tripod can you use this camera |
Answer: | Standard equipment will work with this camera , 1/4 inch tripod |
Question: | Is the camera suitable for professional use |
Answer: | Hello, it is not recommended for professional use. This is for entry-level users |
Question: | The camera is fixed focus it |
Answer: | Fixed focus, adjustment of focus is not supported. We recommend shooting at one meter away. |
Question: | Does the camera come with 2 batteries and a micro sd card |
Answer: | yes |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is so special about this point and shoot that it cost |
Answer: | Hello Brandon~ As a photographer in Tokyo, This camera in my definition is revolutionary. Such as it takes really nice photos during the night (can shoot raw), it can actually shoot better photos than a typical smartphone (top of the line iphone/android) due to its large sensor (larger sensor more light it can capture). It can capture really nice videos 1080 60fps and autofocus really seamlessly. Can connect using wifi built in and send photos to smartphone and can transfer using Canon Connect App. Its also is built better than RX100 series from Sony which is made out of plastic. I dropped mine a couple of times and still works. The touchscreen LCD works flawlessly for setting the camera. The lens is roughly 28mm~80mm equiv. Which makes a perfect camera for wide shots (landscape) and tight shots (portraits). I hope it helps :). Im using this as my youtube camera atm. |
Question: | Does it have time Lapse |
Answer: | The camera has time lapse shooting for stars; see page 77 of manual. |
Question: | Compared to canon powershot g7 x mark ii |
Answer: | I own G9x and used G7x Mark 2 in stores. Being straightforward, I would say price is the biggest difference along with the size 300-400$ difference. G7xM2 is Thicker/Heavier/ IMHO just to incorporate the tilty flippy screen. The G7xMark2 is for people/youtubers/vloggers who want to shoot themselves while the G9x doesnt have that feature. So in a way G9x it is a slimmed down version, however the G9x is far more compact to carry around. I am glad I got the G9x just because its really light. Also G9x lens is 35mm equiv. of 28-80mm while G7xMark2 is 24-100mm (can shoot wider and can shoot far away subjects due to reach). The amount of megapixel is the same so you will get similar results with both cameras. Just pointed out main areas, hope it helps. :) |
Question: | Is the g9x an upgrade over the g7x? I doesnt appear to be but I dont know much about cameras |
Answer: | Not exactly. The G7 X is a 2014 model - it's a little chunky in size, but has a flippable screen and a few extra options compared to the G9 X. This year, Canon "split" the product line, making this slimmer G9X and the more "professional" (but bulky) G5X with. The G9X is really the successor to the S120 camera (there were rumors of an S130, but it hasn't been released...my guess is they went with the G9X instead). However, the sensor on the G9X is fantastic, and the same across the line, so it's mostly about features/size...not performance. Sony has a very similar model with the same sensor but with F/1.8 optics, slightly faster than the F/2 lens in the G9X. However, I liked the overall package of this one. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it accept sd cards |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. The KODAK PXIPRO FZ43 Friendly Zoom Camera takes a standard SD or SDHC memory card. We recommend purchasing a card that is no larger than 32 GB. Please note that the FZ43 is not compatible with Micro SD, Micro/Adapter, Ultra, Ultra Plus, Extreme, or XC Cards. |
Question: | Is this camera compatible with windows |
Answer: | We didn't have a SD card reader built into our computer so I had to buy an external card reader, but once the pictures were on the computer there was no trouble using windows 10 to do anything we did before. |
Question: | My camera won't turn on. I made sure they followed the plus and minus. I even changed the batteries and checked again |
Answer: | Mine did the same thing and the supplied batteries checked good. Then, I put some Duracell batteries in the camera and it came to life. The supplied batteries are probably weak. Try some new Duracell Alkalines and try it again, before you send it back. |
Question: | does it come with a battery charger |
Answer: | No it does not. You must buy your own batteries although some are included. Buy rechargeable and your own charger. |
