Product features

FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS Full-frame E-mount Macro Lens

The full-frame 90mm medium telephoto macro E-mount lens features built in image stabilization for sharp, clear images at up to 1:1 magnification, even when shooting handheld. Advanced optics and coatings with a 9-blade circular aperture deliver exceptionally smooth bokeh that G Lenses are renowned for. Sharp in-focus rendering is achieved with a floating focus mechanism that suppresses aberration equally at all focusing distances, whether the subject is far away or extremely close. Other advanced technologies, such as the Nano AR Coating and Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass, elevate overall performance to an extremely high standard.

Nano AR Coating

Effectively suppress reflections that can cause flare and ghosting with Sony’s original Nano AR Coating technology. This precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than lenses with coatings that use an irregular nano-structure. The reflection suppression characteristic of the Nano AR Coating is superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.

Circular Aperture

When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.

Aspherical lens elements

Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight.

Internal focusing

Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter.

Lens-based optical image stabilization

Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills.

Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) for quiet, precise focusing

Quiet, precise DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focus drive - employs piezoelectric elements oscillating at ultrasonic frequencies to drive the focus lens groups. In this case two floating focus groups are driven by independent DDSSM systems for precision positioning of the relatively heavy lenses required for macro photography. The DDSSM drive system is remarkably quiet, making it ideal for animal and insect photography, as well as for movies. It also improves the precision of “focus wobble” employed to achieve optimum focus when shooting movies.

Focus hold button

Once you’ve adjusted focus to where you want it, pressing this button on the lens barrel will keep the lens locked to that focusing distance. The preview function can also be assigned to this button through the camera’s custom settings.

Focus range limiter

This function allows you to set a limit on the focusing range which can save you time during AF operation as the lens will not ‘hunt’ through the entire focusing range. In macro lenses, this limit can be on either the near or far range (as pictured). In the SEL90M28G, the limit is set on far ranges only.

Sliding Focus Ring

The focus ring slides back and forth to select manual or auto focus which together with a focus hold button, inner focus, and a focus range limiter provide optimum control for macro photography making it easier to shoot insects and other subjects that cannot be approached too closely. Minimal focus breathing and quiet operation are also advantageous for shooting movies.

User questions & answers

Question: It says 75 deg FoV on fullframe. Is that 75 deg horizontal or diagonal
Answer: Diagonal at 28mm https://www.nikonians.org/reviews/fov-tables
Question: Hello all, Is this lens great for landscape photography for a6000, despite it being 42mm on aps-c
Answer: Honestly I bought this for portraits but learned that it's such a great lens for landscapes too. I've had the lenses on my a6000 for about 2 months now and I have gotten so many great images of the city and lakes here in NY that I now am rethinking the purpose i bought it for. It's also a very good lend me for macro shots or even layer shots.
Question: I cant decide between this and and the emount 35mm. they are same price i have a6000. can e lenses fit on full frame if i "upgrade" to full later on
Answer: The SEL28F20 is designed for full-frame cameras, the SEL35F18 is designed for crop-sensor cameras like the a6000. You can use lenses designed for full-frame cameras on crop-sensor bodies and vice versa but your results will vary. There are plenty of articles online that explain these shortcomings in further detail but you are welcome to call us at 1-800-991-3350 to discuss. Please note that with Black Friday coming next week, prices on equipment like this will likely drop due to manufacturer instant rebates so you may want to hold off on purchasing anything.
Question: How is the performance of this lense on an A6000? I was considering getting one and then upgrading to an A7 body later
Answer: I own this lens and use on the a6500. It has outstanding sharpness. The 28mm has a field of view of 42mm on the crop sensor a6000 series which makes it an excellent normal prime lens. I use it for street photography and for architecture and landscape photography. Most of the issues with the lens occur at the edges on full frame cameras. But on the crop sensor the edges are not used, so the issues with distortion are not seen on the a6000 cameras. I highly recommend this over the Sony 35mm 1.8 lens. It is a great lens and excellent value.

    User questions & answers

Question: I have Canon Lens? Will it work with this camera
Answer: I'm debating sticking with Canon or migrating to the a7 platform. This video from TheCameraStoreTV on adapter performance with various lenses was incredibly helpful. Yes, focusing is slower than when done natively, but I find the examples they used in the video to be useable/acceptable amounts of delay. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=213&v=_FVCHHRD7Y8
Question: For legacy lens / manual focus shooters only, does the ibis really warrant getting an a7ii vs. an a
Answer: For me it does. At age 65, my hands may be a little more shaky than yours, but I've reached the point where I almost always insist on IBSI in my next camera. You pay for that privilege ... no doubt, but for me it's worth it. If price is a consideration, then the Olympus E-M5II has the best IBIS available, and you'd be surprised how close it really is in IQ and high ISO performance. But of course it's 16 MP vs 24 MP. I'm currently selling my A7II here on Amazon (look for M33Photo), after deciding to keep the E-M5II. It's like new with a very low shutter count and I always take great care of my equipment.
Question: what is the difference ($300.00 worth at sony site?) btwn 7m2k and 7m
Answer: Hi ampm247, there is no difference between the two. The ILCE7m2k comes with a kit lens. The ILCE7m2 refers only to the camera body. Thanks_Mitch
Question: Are these the best replacement batteries for this camera? http://amzn.to/2lEGjgN
Answer: I've gotten 4 of them Elena and have been totally satisfied. I shoot underwater images and video. As you know, the camera's a power hog but the batteries have not let me down...I'd say go for it!

    User questions & answers

Question: Amazon wants me to wait for another 8 weeks on top of the 8 weeks (from 01/09/19) that they have previously estimated, any ideas what is the hold up
Answer: This is an APS-C Lens. It will work without adapter, but will need to be in APS-C/Super 35 mode
Question: What would the focal length be if I were to use this on the Sony a
Answer: You need to read tripod specs to find the camera + lens weight the tripod can support. The Sony A6500 with A70-350 lens is under 3 pounds. Most, if not all, tripods can hold that weight. However, you need to consider many other factors when chooging a tripod. You might want to google how to choose a tripod/head. You need to look at load capacity, height, weight, folded length, ball heads, graphite, carbon fiber or aluminum, type of leg locks, pan & tilt range, with or without center column, your budget, etc.. Depending on what kinds of conditions or subjects you shoot, some of these factors may not be at all important to you. But you don't want to pay extra for features you don't want or need. I probably use a tripod less than 5% of the time. I don't do landscape and If I eliminated the few times a year that I shoot night skies or do light painting, I would not need or use a tripod.
Question: Hey guys , can some of you tell us when you placed the order and how long you have waited , want to eyeball when ill get mine . Placed an order Jan
Answer: Hi, no it will not.
Question: Any experience comparing this with the Zeiss Batis
Answer: Hello. The Sony 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G Lens is compatible with the Sony a6600. Filter diameter is 67mm.

    Product features

Sony Alpha Full-frame E-mount Wide Prime G Master Lens

The 24mm F1.4 GM features an advanced optical design, including two XA (Extreme Aspherical) elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that delivering outstanding corner-to-corner resolution, even at a wide F1.4 aperture. An 11-blade circular aperture mechanism creates beautiful bokeh that is a hallmark of the G Master series. Fast focusing is attained through the DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focus drive system. This lens sports class-leading size and weight, providing great handling and mobility.

Compact G Master wide prime lens w/ stunning wide-open resolution

The FE 24mm F1.4 GM realizes consistently high resolution across the entire frame and delivers soft and natural bokeh - a signature feature of Sony’s G Master lens series. It also boasts a new optical design comprised of 10 groups with 13 elements, including two XA (extreme aspherical) and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements. The incorporation of two XA elements ensures that point light sources can be accurately reproduced, making the FE 24mm F1.4 GM a compelling proposition for astrophotography. For impressive clarity, Sony’s unique Nano AR Coating is applied to reduce lens flare and ghosting, even in landscape shots where the position of the sun can be problematic with a normal lens.

    F1.4 max aperture

The F1.4 max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field, allowing you to isolate your subject from the foreground and background with amazing light gathering capabilities when shooting wide open. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the areas out of the focal plane appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background is enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens.

11-blade circular aperture contributes to gorgeous bokeh

The 11-blade circular aperture maximizes the beauty of this large-aperture prime-lens, contributing to impressive images in which the subject stands out against a smoothly defocused foreground and background, as well as perfectly round points of defocused light. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides that create unappealing, polygonal-shaped defocused points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.

Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) for fast, quiet, precise focusing

The 24mm F1.4 GM lens supports hybrid autofocus for both contrast and focal-plane phase detection AF. It has a high-precision Direct Drive Super Sonic Motor (DDSSM) system that ensures exceptionally fast, quiet and accurate AF performance. The precision internal focus mechanism aids in AF speed by moving only the middle groups of the optical system and effectively minimizing focus breathing, while keeping the lens size compact and lightweight. In addition to being the ideal wide prime lens for stills, it is also exceptionally suited for video with a linear motor that takes on the vital role of ‘wobbling’ to providing high-speed actuation for the contrast AF detection system, for smooth, continuous AF.

Two XA (Extreme Aspherical) lens element

The 24mm F1.4 GM employs two XA (Extreme Aspherical) lens element, one of which is the front lens. This large-diameter front XA lens element features a new optical design, maximizing the advantages of the short mirrorless camera flange distance, and effectively suppresses various aberrations, especially the peripheral area in the frame and sagittal flare. Two XA elements compensate for coma, field curvature, and astigmatism that can be problems with wide-angle large-aperture optics. This also contributes to the compact and lightweight design.

Nano AR coating suppresses reflections, flare and ghosting

Sony’s original Nano AR Coating technology minimizes flare and ghosting, for dynamic range that achieves lifelike detail and gradation with advanced camera sensors. This precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than with lenses that use coatings with an irregular nano-structure. The reflection suppression characteristic of the Nano AR Coating is superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.

    Compact, lightweight design

This remarkably compact and lightweight lens weighs in at only 15.7oz (445g) with smallest in class dimensions of 3” (75.4mm) diameter and 3-3/4” (92.4mm) in length. It’s compact, lightweight design enhances portability and mobility thanks to the combination of optical design utilizing two XA elements and the newly developed DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) AF system.

Manual aperture ring w/ selectable on/off click for stills or movie

A responsive manual aperture ring offers positive action that will satisfy professional photographers and moviemakers alike. The aperture ring click stops can be switched on or off as required. “Off” is the preferred setting for moviemaking since it results in the least aperture operation noise. When “On” the ring provides tactile feedback that is useful when shooting stills.

Focus hold button, programmable for multiple functions

The focus hold button not only performs its primary function to lock focus when recomposing, but can be customized to a number of other functions depending on your needs. In addition to Focus Hold, these custom functions include: Eye AF, AF On, Aperture Preview, Shot Result Preview or Bright Monitoring.

Dust and moisture resistant for robust reliability

The dust and moisture resistance design makes this lens appropriate for heavy-duty outdoor use, especially when combined with a camera that employs weather resistant measures.

    Astrophotography Sagittal flare suppression

Sagittal flare is a phenomenon that results in an unnatural spreading of point light sources that appears somewhat like a bird spreading its wings and becomes more pronounced towards the image periphery. It is most common in large-aperture lenses. The 24mm F1.4 GM incorporates a new optical design, including two XA lens elements, to effectively suppress and correct for sagittal flare, making this lens ideal for night sky and astrophotography.

    User questions & answers

Question: Which brand of remote flash trigger kit work whit this camera and an external flash
Answer: Yes, all lenses compatible with the a6300 should be compatible with the a6400.
Question: is there a sony capture and raw image processing software, like Nikon has
Answer: hello, we do not make any weather resistant lenses.
Question: Does this have 4k 30 minute limit like previous camera
Answer: Correct, it does not have in-body Image Stabilization . That is main thing that the a6500 has that the a6400 does not. However if you use a lens with OSS (Optical Steady Shot), then the lack of in body stabilization should be mostly negated. Both of the kit lens options have OSS, as do many other nicer lenses. You can check out this video to see the difference between having in-body stabilization vs not: https://youtu.be/WASJHtC6ADo
Question: will this camera use Canon lenses and still have excellent auto focus
Answer: Hello, no in 4k the highest frame rate available is 30fps.
