6 best amateur telescopes

Amateur telescopes are optical instruments designed for hobbyists and enthusiasts who are interested in observing celestial objects such as planets, stars, galaxies, and the moon. They come in various types, including refractors, reflectors, and compound telescopes, and are used for stargazing, astronomy, and astrophotography. Here are some key points about amateur telescopes:

  1. Refractors, Reflectors, and Compound Telescopes: There are three main types of amateur telescopes:

    • Refractor Telescopes: These use lenses to bend and focus light. They are known for their crisp, high-contrast images but can be expensive for larger apertures.
    • Reflector Telescopes: These use mirrors to gather and focus light. They are known for affordability and can provide good image quality.
    • Compound Telescopes: Also known as catadioptric or "compound" telescopes, these combine lenses and mirrors to offer a compromise between size, image quality, and cost. The Schmidt-Cassegrain and Maksutov-Cassegrain designs are common examples.
  2. Aperture: The aperture of a telescope is the diameter of its primary optical element (either a lens or a mirror). A larger aperture allows more light to enter the telescope, resulting in brighter and more detailed views of celestial objects. Amateur telescopes come in various aperture sizes to suit different needs and budgets.

  3. Mounts: Telescopes are typically mounted on either alt-azimuth or equatorial mounts. Equatorial mounts are designed to track celestial objects as they move across the night sky, making them ideal for astrophotography.

  4. Accessories: Amateur astronomers often use a variety of accessories with their telescopes, including eyepieces, filters, and motorized mounts. These accessories can enhance the viewing experience and enable advanced observational techniques.

  5. Astrophotography: Many amateur astronomers use telescopes for astrophotography, capturing stunning images of celestial objects. To do this, they often attach cameras to their telescopes and use specialized equipment to track the apparent motion of the stars.

  6. Portable Telescopes: Some amateur telescopes are designed to be portable and easy to set up, making them suitable for travel and on-the-go stargazing.

  7. Learning Curve: Using a telescope effectively often requires some learning and practice, especially when it comes to locating and tracking celestial objects. Astronomy books, online resources, and local astronomy clubs can be valuable sources of information and support for beginners.

In summary, amateur telescopes come in various types and sizes, catering to the interests and budgets of astronomy enthusiasts. They allow hobbyists to explore the wonders of the night sky, observe celestial objects, and even engage in astrophotography. Choosing the right telescope depends on individual preferences and intended use, whether it's casual stargazing or more advanced astronomical pursuits.

User questions & answers

Question: I live in alaska at about 61n latitude. are there any geographic limitations on the controller's database
Answer: Wow!! I imagine seen Polaris right in top of my head. I don’t think that there are any limitations as long as you look the sky and see stars. Good luck and good stargazing 🌟🌗🌔
Question: Can this telescope be taken apart for travelling
Answer: The mount, Optical Tube and tripod can be taken apart. You can even transport it with our Telescope bag for StarNavigator NG 90 refractor (part # 205004).
Question: Come with tripode
Answer: Yes. It comes with a tripod and accessory tray.
Question: How does it do for taking pictures
Answer: I have taken some decent pictures with this telescope. I got it as my first one. A couple things to bear in mind though, there is going to be a little bit of chromatic abrasion in this telescope. More importantly though, the tripod/mount is not meant for moving a large camera rig so it may not slew accurately if you have a large SLR camera mounted to it, and the tripod is a risk of tipping over at some angles. I have had decent success imaging the moon, Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter using my Pixel 2 XL and a phone mount for the telescope. The planets are going to be blurry, but identifiable. Also the included eyepieces are pretty cheap, and add a significant curvature to the image. Ultimately this is a great scope for someone looking to get into stargazing and want to learn about the night sky from the AudioStar controller, but for photography, you need to keep the equipment light or use a better tripod/mount system. But it can do the job. Looking back I probably would have bought something like the Meade Infinity and spent the other $300 on equipment for photography. I posted a picture I took of the moon using this telescope and my cellphone on my personal Instagram @devonabeckett. https://www.instagram.com/p/BkPDSL0HkEC

Orion SpaceProbe 130ST EQ Reflector Telescope Kit

Orion

Based on 68 reviews Check latest price

Product description

This "ST", or "Short Tube", version of the SpaceProbe 130 reflector is indeed more compact than the standard model. The 130ST reflector optical tube measures 24" long compared to 33" on the standard 130. The focal length of the ST's 130mm (5.1") primary mirror is 650mm (f/5), yielding a wider field of view and brighter images for a given telescope eyepiece focal length. The 130mm aperture primary is a diffraction-limited parabolic mirror, the same type used on much larger reflector telescopes costing many times as much. On a short-focal-length design like this one, a parabolic mirror is a must for focusing incoming light to a point and delivering sharp, detailed images. Moreover, the secondary mirror is held in an advanced holder with thin 0.5mm metal vanes, to reduce diffraction spikes and light loss. These features combined with the included 25mm (26x power) and 10mm (65x power) Sirius Plossl telescope eyepieces and quick-release 6x30 achromatic finder scope make this one sweet optical system for astronomy! The SpaceProbe 130ST EQ reflector telescope also includes a collimation cap and center-marked primary mirror for easy optical alignment. The SpaceProbe 130ST EQ Reflector Telescope Kit comes with extra accessories at a great value! The popular Shorty 2x Barlow doubles the magnification of any 1.25" eyepiece for a power boost. The included Orion MoonMap 260 is a useful reference map of the Moon's surface that will help the whole family learn the names and locations of more than 260 craters, mountains, valleys, "seas" and other interesting lunar features you can explore with your telescope. The detailed Orion Telescope Observer's Guide book highlights over 60 celestial objects to observe in a telescope. Use the included Star Target planisphere to plan your observing sessions year-round! The RedBeam Mini LED light provides dark-friendly red light when you need it under starry skies.

  • This 5.1" aperture reflector telescope gathers an ample amount of light for great views of the planets and Moon, as well as brighter galaxies, nebulas, and star clusters
  • Relatively short, 24" long optical tube design for easy portability and fast f/5 focal ratio for pleasing wide-field performance makes the SpaceProbe 130ST EQ a very versatile telescope the whole family can enjoy
  • Included Shorty 2x Barlow doubles the magnification of both included eyepieces
  • Use the included Star Target Planisphere and MoonMap 260 to plan stargazing sessions
  • The included Orion Telescope Observer's Guide book will lead beginning amateur astronomers to over sixty interesting objects to explore

User questions & answers

Question: Can you attach a camera to this telescope
Answer: How do get info on camera attachment
Question: Is it infrared
Answer: Nope
Question: Is it equipped for astrophotography
Answer: You can't use this to take long astronomic exposures because the planet or nebula (or whatever) will move during the exposure. To take long exposures, you need two things: an equatorial mount and a clock drive. However, you can take great shots of the moon or other really bright object. The moon is so bright, a fast shutter speed works fine.
Question: Is this telescope easy to travel with
Answer: Not really. It needs a good size case for it. Plus I would not trust airport to cate for it. If in your car or RV it would fair much better.
