User questions & answers
Question: | I am near sighted and wear glasses. Does this have a focus relief to adjust so I do not have to wear my glasses when using them |
Answer: | Yes, but you would have to travel on a spacecraft about 650 million miles closer to Saturn. Or use 50X telescope from Earth. |
Question: | What is there close focusing distance |
Answer: | I'm looking at the box (I just got it for fathers day today). It has "Tripod adaptable for a stable viewing platform by using the optional tripod adapter". You have to buy that separately. The directions even show how to do it. Amazon has the adapter shown (Nikon Adapter 7650). It's kind of spendy, but from what i've read, it's just a standard 1/4"-20 mount- just about any of those will work. not sure where some of the other answers are getting their info. |
Question: | What does fog proof mean |
Answer: | According to the specs, it's 3.05 or 3.06 pounds. Assume it's 3, since .05 or .06 pounds is about an ounce. |
Question: | Are these fog/waterproof |
Answer: | The first number is the power of the lens, that is how much it will magnify the image. The second number represents the diameter of the lens in mm. They work together to calculate a number called the "exit pupil" or "exit ratio". Take the lens size and divide it by the power to get this number. The higher the number, the brighter the image. For example, 10x50 will give an exit ratio of 5.0, 8x42 would be 5.25, 10x42 would be 4.2. In my opinion, the exit ratio is more important than the power. My favorite binoculars are 8x50 (6.25) but I also just bought 10x50 as a gift who is delighted with that configuration. Stay away from high-power binoculars. They, for me, are too hard to keep steady due to the high magnification.I hope this helps.-Norm |

Nikon MONARCH 5 12x42 Binocular
Even with an uncontested heritage of all-conditions optical performance, the MONARCH 5 further elevates its game with improved agility and advanced low light brilliance. The addition of Nikon’s ED glass lenses puts it in a class of its own for battling darkness with sharp, high-contrast views. The rubber-armored coating provides a non-slip grip in even the toughest environments.
Nikon's ED Glass Lenses
The Difference Is Clear
All MONARCH 5 binoculars are now built with Nikon’s legendary ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass lenses, which correct chromatic aberrations across the furthest limits of the visible light range and effectively compensate for color fringing. Even when observing objects that would make chromatic aberration the most apparent – such as adjacent whites and blacks – the images will maintain superior contrast and resolution thanks to the ED glass lenses. The improved resolution also provides brighter, more natural looking images, making the MONARCH 5 a serious contender to be your 'go-to' binocular for years to come.
Enjoy Comfortable Viewing

The turn-and-slide rubber eyecups allow users to adjust the eye-relief for a custom fit - providing a full field of view and maximum comfort during extended periods of use.

User questions & answers
Question: | The specs say this product weighs 4.8 oz but some of the reviews complain of the weight. Just how much do these binoculars weigh |
Answer: | Weighed in at 36.68 oz and another 5.5 oz for the case and strap. (approx 2.6 lbs all in) |
Question: | On the product information section it lists batteries: 1 Lithium ion batteries required. What is this for |
Answer: | An error. Batteries are only required for image stabilization, this binocular is not that type. |
Question: | Will the 7245 be good for bright moon or star observations. There has been some reviews that state the lenses will distort on a full moon |
Answer: | Actually I use these to observe the moon and they are wonderful. I certainly do not notice any distortion and can see many dozens if not hundreds of moon craters and the image is bright and razor sharp. I can also easily see the Galilean moons of Jupiter with these. Jupiter is visible in the early nighttime right now. The Galilean moons can be clearly seen with these binoculars hand held but for a steady image I highly recommend a heavy tripod with a binocular adapter. The 7245 of course has built in threading for a tripod binoculars adapter. I was so surprised that such celestial objects are clearly visible with these. Highly recommended. |
Question: | I'm looking for a binocular that is exceptionally good in low light to watch feeding owls at dusk and after. How do these 10x 50's perform |
Answer: | Good low-light performance is almost entirely dependent on the magnification and diameter of the lens. From this you can derive exit pupil diameter and twilight factor which are both important for low-light viewing. These binoculars have an exit pupil of 5mm (50mm lens / 10x magnification), which is close to as wide as human pupils get (~7mm in total darkness). The twilight factor for 10x50mm binoculars are about as good as it gets while still having the magnification and size low enough to avoid excessive shaking of the image from your hand movement. Many people will try to talk about light transmission as important for low-light, but keep in mind that almost all decent Porro lens binoculars that cost more than $100 or so will have light transmission greater than 80% across most of the visible range. The difference between 80% and e.g. 95% light transmission has a rather small effect on perceived brightness, and really shouldn't be an important factor in choosing your optics. Blue light transmission is more important in low light conditions, and some binoculars have significantly lower or higher transmission in that region of the light spectrum, but still these binoculars have been spec'd at >75% transmission for blue. Keep in mind that the difference in brightness between 95% and 75% transmission is approximately equivalent to the brightness difference between one minute and the next minute during the time between sunset and dusk. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the "near focus" of these binoculars? In other words, what's the closest to the object being viewed at which these will focus sharply |
Answer: | The Nikon ProStaff 8x42 will focus sharp at 3 meters or about 9 feet 10 inches. |
Question: | Are these fogproof |
Answer: | Not sure what you mean by "Are these fogproof." Nikon advertises these Nikon 16030 binoculars as "waterproof" so I would think that condensation forming on the binocular will not result in damage. Will the lens fog? Absolutely yes, as will any cold surface in contact with atmospheric water vapor. When water vapor in the atmosphere contacts a cold surface (or cold binocular) the vapor cools and condenses into liquid water assuming certain conditions having to do with temperature and pressure are met. To reduce "fog" on the lens keep your binocular warm, inside your jacket if possible. |
Question: | Is it really 4.8 oz or 19.9 oz, waterproof/fogproof, 413 ft/1,000 yd FOV |
Answer: | They are 19.9 oz. I have had no issues with fogging and the ratio is correct. I hope this helps. They are the best binoculars I’ve had. |
Question: | Do these binoculars come with there own carrying case |
Answer: | they come with lens caps, not a carrying case |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this binocualars appropriate for watching birds and wildlife in Alaska |
Answer: | Perfect! I have been told the Nikon lenses are the best and these are remarkably clear. The pair I bought are used to watch wildlife too and they will not disappoint. I was followed by a Steller eagle everday on my walks and she was so big I didn't need binoculars. Now I can see every feather! Best of luck in finding some great wildlife! |
Question: | Does it come with a case and lens protectors |
Answer: | Yes, but’s its a bit lacking. The soft sided case will protect against scratches, and will provide very good protection of the 4 outer lenses should you lose the well designed lens caps...but drop them from not even a table top height and they can get a devastating crack or complete snap off!! considering the quality of the binoculars (5 stars) I would expect something that offers more protection. I’ve had Minolta and other Nikons and the and the industry’s standards have gotten worse....Can’t they bring back the original hard cases?? And bring them back without a huge fee? |
Question: | I know nothing about binoculars. Am looking for small,l lightweight to watch granddaughter at indoor gymnastics meets. They move all around |
Answer: | these binoculars magnify things 10x greater than your normal vision. For an indoor gymnastics event I would look at something in the 3x - 8x magnification the 42 refers to the field of view. This might be okay for a gym depending on where you are sitting and size of the gym. |
Question: | What is the difference between the 8x42 or 10x |
Answer: | The first number; that is the 8 or the 10 refers to the magnification value. So, with a 10x42 you can bring things closer than with an 8x42. The 42 refers to the aperture or the size of the opening in the front element. The larger the aperture, the more light and things appear brighter. Choosing really depends on what you're using the binocular for and in what kind of light. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are they waterproof |
Answer: | I do not know what the water proof level is. I use the binocs in Alaska on light rainy days with no problem. The binocs worked well. I recommend them. |
Question: | Do these binoculars have twist up eye cups so you can use them with glasses |
Answer: | Sorry but I can not answer your question. The section which meets your eyes does twist up (further away from the body) but I truly don't know if this is what you are asking about. Good luck. Victor |
Question: | is this Binocular good for star gazing , anyone seen planets with it yet? debating whether i should get this or orion 10x50 wide angle Binocular |
Answer: | these are very good for star gazing. remember the first number is magnification. i can see jupiters moons with any high quality binocs but higher mag the better. saturn is a more difficult and distant object but you will still make out 'bulges'. venus can be clearly defined as a crescent as well. |
Question: | what is Bak |
Answer: | Bak4 is a higher quality glass used in binocular prisms. This is a barium crown glass. It is a higher quality refractive index glass than the more commonly used Bk7. |

Nikon’s Field Flattener Lens System works in conjunction with Monarch HG’s extraordinarily wide field of view - 8.3o and 6.9o respectively in the 8x42 and 10x42 models - to provide a sharp, clear view to the outer edges of the lenses
