13 best birding optics

Birding optics refer to a range of optical equipment designed for birdwatching and observing wildlife in their natural habitats. These optics include binoculars, spotting scopes, and related accessories. Birding optics play a crucial role in enhancing the birdwatching experience by providing clear and detailed views of birds. Here's an overview of birding optics:

  1. Binoculars: Binoculars are the most common and versatile optics for birdwatching. They come in various magnifications (e.g., 8x, 10x) and objective lens sizes (e.g., 42mm) to suit different preferences and lighting conditions. Binoculars provide a two-eyed view, making it easier to locate and track birds. Look for high-quality binoculars with features like multi-coated lenses, phase-corrected prisms, waterproofing, and fogproofing for optimal performance.

  2. Spotting Scopes: Spotting scopes, also known as birding scopes or field scopes, are powerful telescopes designed for long-distance observation. They offer high magnification and are mounted on tripods for stability. Birders use spotting scopes when they need to observe distant birds with extreme detail. These scopes are especially useful for shorebird and raptor watching.

  3. Tripods and Mounts: To stabilize binoculars or spotting scopes and reduce image shake, birdwatchers often use tripods or mounts. A stable platform helps maintain a steady view, which is essential for observing distant or small birds.

  4. Digiscoping: Many birders are also photographers. Digiscoping involves attaching a digital camera or smartphone to a spotting scope or binoculars to capture high-quality photos and videos of birds. Special adapters and accessories are available for digiscoping.

  5. Eyepieces and Accessories: Birding optics often come with interchangeable eyepieces and accessories to enhance their versatility. Different eyepiece designs can provide various magnification options or wider fields of view.

  6. Optical Coatings: High-quality birding optics feature optical coatings like fully multi-coated lenses and phase-corrected prisms. These coatings reduce glare, improve image brightness and contrast, and enhance color fidelity.

  7. Waterproof and Fogproof: Birding often involves outdoor adventures in various weather conditions. Optics that are waterproof and fogproof are essential to protect them from moisture, rain, and humidity.

  8. Field of View: A wide field of view is beneficial for birdwatching as it helps you locate and track birds more easily. Binoculars and spotting scopes with wider fields of view make birding more enjoyable.

  9. Exit Pupil: The exit pupil diameter is calculated by dividing the objective lens diameter by the magnification. A larger exit pupil (e.g., 5mm) is advantageous in low-light conditions as it allows more light to reach your eyes.

  10. Eye Relief: Adequate eye relief is crucial, especially for eyeglass wearers. Ensure that your birding optics have sufficient eye relief to accommodate your glasses comfortably.

Birding optics are essential tools for birdwatchers, enabling them to appreciate the beauty of birds and observe their behavior in detail. When choosing birding optics, consider your specific needs, budget, and the types of birds and environments you plan to observe. High-quality optics can greatly enhance your birdwatching experiences.

User questions & answers

Question: Mrads or yards for the ranging reticle
Answer: This is a clear view spotting scope. It does not have a ranging feature in the reticle.
Question: does this scope come with a cover
Answer: Yes. Mine came with plastic lens covers and a neoprene cover. The neoprene cover limits the rotation of the scope a little but it's worth it for the protection it offers. It also has neoprene covers at each end that quickly pop off when you want to use the scope. They use a elastic type cords to hold them in place and then they hang down when removed and easily go back on.
Question: What is the closest distancance in which it can focus
Answer: I’ve recorded video on this from about 20 feet away
Question: Recommended tripods
Answer: Optics manufacturers branded tripods are usually overpriced, you are better of with photo tripod and head.

User questions & answers

Question: Does anyone know the difference between this binocular and the one that sells for $58 by the same maker
Answer: Don't see a binocular listed at $58 on Amazon. If the questioner could give the name and number, (e.g., Celestron 7332 Nature DX 8X42), I'll take a stab at an answer.
Question: Is this a good bin for star gazing and looking at the moon
Answer: For holding with hands better than a x50 but not as good as a x35 or x25. If you have a mount a x50 or x60 would be better. These binoculars are better suited for bird watching where star gazing is a secondary function.
Question: Which is better for the stadium, the 8x42 or the 10x
Answer: Most 10x42 binoculars have a field of view of about 300 feet at 1000 yards. This means you just need to be over half a mile from the field and you will be able to see everything unfolding on the field, and it will appear much closer than if you looked at it from a 1000 yards with your naked eye.
Question: For beginning birdwatchers, is the 8x42 or the 10x42 better
Answer: 8x42 until the amateur birder becomes more proficient in identifying birds and his/her use of bins. I used 10x50 in my start of the past time, and then switched to 10x42. I also use 12x56 bins since they serve better for long distant viewing and identification.

User questions & answers

Question: should i buy this or the nikon trailblazer 10x25 lifetime warranty
Answer: I am not a big fan of X 25. Just does not let in enough light for my needs. So I went with the x32 . I just wanted a knock around that was not too compacted. But you get what you pay for. These Wingspan are Ok, more substantial with better view than the smaller nikon 10x25. Nikon lens' are better but still too small. Trade off.
Question: Does it come with a case
Answer: Yes.... Nice case. The strap is not too nice. There's a very nice one for sale on Amazon for 7 or 8 bucks.
Question: Do these work well with children
Answer: Good size for kids and anything smaller than 32 seems to make it difficult for them to find the object. Bigger sizes make the binoculars themselves heavy. I like these and would recommend you give kids lots of instructions and practice.
Question: I'd be takign this out on a stand up paddle board on the ocean. Are these waterproof
Answer: You don't want to submerge them. They will stand up to fresh water splashes but not full out dunks. I'm comfortable taking them in a kayak but not on my board.
