| Answer: | Clamping Voltage = 400V. Surge Rating = 540 joules. Response Time = n/a. (Strangely, the response time is not available on the product website. I don't know if it means that it's a problem.) I would look elsewhere. There are a lot of other surge protectors that sell for less and provide better protection. It has a normal clamping voltage but its surge rating is low. So, it's going to stop working much earlier than other surge protectors. And, it's not like this really smooths out the line noise as it filters out only 20db (which is much lower than other devices). Frankly, I don't know why people would buy this, especially at this price ($30) and why it has a high rating. I guess the unit looks sturdy and looks like a heavy duty piece of equipment but it really isn't. The company is tricking you. |

| Answer: | It will attenuate some noise, but the cause of most "buzzing" is typically only solved through isolation. Your wiring likely has some issues with the ground, or something is creating some sort of ground noise contamination. The cheapest solution is to determine what's causing the noise - that source likely utilizes a motor (possibly a fan). Isolation (transformer isolation) is going to cost you as much or more than this power strip. Double-online conversion (DOLC) UPS is by far the most complete solution - but is very expensive. The basic explanation of DOLC UPS: the UPS converts AC to DC, filters through batteries, then inverts back to a pure sine wave - the equipment is always on UPS power, hence there is zero transfer time and no phase shift when there's a loss of utility (line) power. I use Series Mode suppression in conjunction with DOLC UPS protection (the SM suppression is before - protecting the DOLC USP) with all my sensitive equipment. It's not cheap - but my sensitive equipment gets only pure, rock-steady and regulated (always 120V), noise free power. This suppressor is bulky and large, but is cheaper than the other Furman product that I use for Series Mode suppression. While not 100% series mode suppression, it's much less expensive than the products by Brick Wall and SurgeX, and none of my Furman products have allowed a fatal surge - and I live in Florida (LOTS of lightning). |

If there's a power failure or you unplug it and the power returns , all the relay outputs turn on at once, same as plugging all your equipment in at once. Defeats the purpose in my opinion. I took it apart and rewired the 24v to the relays to a separate switch to give the internal processor time to reset. |

The iFi audio AC iPurifier cleans up the dirty AC mains, detects, and solves annoying mains based electromagnetic interference (EMI), radio frequency interference (RFI), Earth, plus ground issues. Intelligent Ground connection

Polarity and Earth detection
When it comes to mains AC, there are two common errors which people can make when setting up a system. The first has to do with polarity and the incorrect orientation of USA and EU type mains pins. Intelligent Polarity automatically informs you of incorrect orientation by changing to a red LED.
The second error is the a lack of Ground/Earth. In a system where there may or may not be a lack of a Ground/Earth, simply insert the AC iPurifier into the system and it will tell you one way or the other. When the two LEDs light up green everything is in order!
Overvoltage Surge Protection
For the rare instances where there is an overvoltage spike (from a mains electricity surge or lightning strike for example), the AC iPurifier will automatically shut off and stop electricity from passing through your system. This should protect your valuable and highly-sensitive mains equipment from harm.
Noise Reduction
This chart compares the AC iPurifier (green line), which is ACTIVE, versus generic mains filters (red line) which are typically passive. | Answer: | NO! Absolutely NOT ! This is NOT an automatic voltage regulator and this is NOT a 50/60Hz sine wave reconstructions filter. The 2 stage conducted interference filter in this power conditioner removes noise at higher frequencies, typically well over 1000 Hz. If an electronic device is tripping off otherwise misbehaving when supplied from a "regular generator" this is unlikely do anything to change the situation. On the other hand if you have a modern generator you don't need to add anything. A classic "regular generator" from the design most commonly used before 1985 is an alternator that regulates its AC output using electromagnetic feedback from the AC load current in the main stator winding to boost the exciter winding that drives the alternator's rotating exciter coil through a DC rectifier, the inductance of the exciter coil is the only DC filter, hence the superimposed harmonic ripple. This type of generator has poor voltage regulation especially for capacitive (electronic power supply) loads, briefly sags/surges with changes in the load. This type of alternator produces a sine wave with smaller superimposed harmonic sine wave the harmonic determined by the number of poles in the stator's exciter drive. Since roughly 1985 a "regular generator" doesn't have electromagnetic feedback for the exciter supply and adds an electronic regulator to the rectified DC from the exciter winding output to regulate the 60Hz AC output. The regulated DC drive for the exciter coil filters out the exciter drive harmonic and the main output is a clean sine wave at the rotating speed of the machine, typically 3600 RPM for 60 Hz in North America. Electronically regulated "regular generators" don't have any voltage sag or surge unless the machine is grossly overloaded. The prime mover (internal combustion engine) is frequency regulated not phase locked, which means that it doesn't respond instantly to large load changes and the rotating machine so briefly slow down and speed up causing the AC line *frequency* to wobble, down when load suddenly increases, up when load suddenly decreases. Electronic power supplied simply rectify the AC line and are insensitive to small frequency deviations. It isn't practical to update generator with the older non-electronic regulation by adding electronic regulation, which is to say it can be done but the cost of the required expertise to do it is a multiple of the cost of replacing a residential machine. So - unless you have a very old design generator, you don't need to do anything to regulate the power. If you have an old design generator, the best choice is probably to replace the generator, an electronic AVR (automatic voltage regulator) can regulate the voltage but it won't clean up the sine wave, its just an elecronically tap changing transformer, while a ferro-magentic resonant transformer, aka a Sola transformer, will remove power spikes, regulate voltage, filter harmonics and even hold up the load during single cycle line power drop outs, but its not widely marketed to consumers, and the simplest designs have an audible buzz. |

I bought a CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS System recently and it's working flawlessly. Although for high-end audio you may want a Furman P-1800 PFR as power regulator. I actually use both in series and place my high-end audio equipment behind the P-1800 PFR. |

For best result, use a linear power supply instead of either of these, but those can be expensive and also bulky. |

| Answer: | It is optical, not electrical so I cannot see why it would be a problem. Obviously that means that it is a pipeline for a high intensity beam of low level laser light. But you must take great care not to bend it very much. A kink would likely render it inoperable. My suggestion for running cables of any kind these days is to run a backup cable, or place it in a conduit so that a replacement could be pulled through or a second cable could be added. |

Voltage Regulation
Regulates the output voltage on Banks 1-4 to 120 VAC ± 5 VAC. This is accomplished through two boost stages and one buck stage of voltage regulation. In Boost Stage 1 the voltage is boosted in the 109-119V range, while Boost Stage 2 boosts the voltage in the 100-109V range. The Buck Stage acts to reduce voltage in the 125-136V range. LiFT Technology EMI/RFI Noise Filtration : Your audio/video components are constantly being bombarded by electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) through their AC power source. This contaminated power can affect audio/video equipment and will degrade the overall performance of your entire system. Common symptoms of contaminated power include loss of picture detail, dull colors, pops, hisses, hums and visual artifacts.
Automatic Over and Under Voltage Protection (AVM)
Panamax's patent pending power monitoring circuitry constantly monitors the AC line voltage for unsafe voltage conditions such as momentary spikes or prolonged over-voltages and under-voltages (brownouts). These unsafe conditions pose a very dangerous threat to all electronic equipment within the home. If the MAX 5400-PM senses an unsafe power condition, it will automatically disconnect your equipment from the power to protect equipment from damage.Once the voltage returns to a safe level, the M5400-PM will automatically reconnect the power. When subjected to a 6,000V (open circuit voltage) / 500A (short circuit current) surge, the M5400-PM limits its voltage output to less than 330V peak, UL's best rating. If the magnitude of the surge is greater than the capacity of the surge protection components, the M5400-PM's Protect or Disconnect Circuitry will disconnect your equipment in order to protect it. The M5400-PM will need to be repaired or replaced by Panamax if this occurs within the product’s 3 year warranty.
Five Isolated Outlet Banks
The M5400-PM is designed to provide noise isolation between the outlet banks so that any noise created by A/V components plugged into the M5400-PM cannot contaminate the power going to equipment plugged into the other outlet banks of the M5400-PM.
Sequential Startup/Shutdown
Complex audio/video systems may be susceptible to voltage transients generated internally at start-up/shutdown if all of the equipment is powered on or off at the same time. This can cause speaker "thumps" which are not only annoying but can also damage the speakers and/or trip product circuit breakers. The M5400-PM is designed to eliminate these transients by providing a "start-up" delay for the High-Current outlets and a "shutdown" delay for the Switched Outlet Banks. This minimizes in-rush current issues by allowing the components plugged into the Switched Outlet Banks to power-up and stabilize before any amplifiers and powered sub-woofers are turned on. This sequence is reversed during shutdown. The amplifiers and powered subwoofers turn off, their power supplies drain, and then the equipment plugged into the Switched Outlet Banks are turned off.
USB Charger, LAN, and Gaming Ports
The M5400-PM features a front panel convenience charger for mp3 players, cell phones, video game controllers, and other small electronics. (NOTE: Some devices may not be compatible with this USB charger.) Add to this an easy-to-access LAN port pass-thru from the rear panel to the front panel for online gaming and a convenience outlet located on the front panel, perfect for gaming systems and other electronics.
