Answer:	I've done this with numerous devices and it works fine (as long as if the connectors fit of coarse). Only problem would be framerate and resolution. I believe framerate is locked in at 30 fps and resolution has 3 options: 720*480 352*480 352*240. This is great if you're playing on an older console like the ps1 or even ps2 (keep in mind that you're working with a 4:3 aspect ratio). Video editing can fix this issue though. Also, did notice video/audio sync issues with the 720*480 resolution option. Fortunately, the sync issue was consistant so video editing allowed me to fix that. FINAL VERDICT: If you are looking for hd 60fps video recording, this is not the device for you. However, if you're looking for the cheapest way to capture decent gameplay footage, this device should do the trick. Hope this was helpful. (Also, if you can tell me the exact console you are wanting to capture with this, I might be able to confirm that it works)

Answer:	Is your DVD player very old? That could be the problem with the video conversion since your projector obviously is newer with a HDMI input jack. I know for instance that I could plug my VHS machine into the rear of an older receiver and feed the HDMI out to an older HDTV. However I can't do that with the new 4K HDTV sets, giving me a black picture, my having to by-pass the video-in on the receiver and use the converter's HDMI input jack instead with a receiver that uses HDMI jacks that carry audio and video. For instance, much older Onkyo receivers had HDMI inputs but for audio only, no pass through for the video switching.

Here's the thing: You have to dig into the *video* input capture settings, where you'll find a Mute checkbox, which defaults to enabled. You'll want to uncheck that, then audio capture will work. Audio capture via PulseAudio may also be crackly and broken, in which case, it's advised to use pavucontrol to disable PulseAudio for the capture device, and use ALSA directly.

Just make sure that the drive is hooked up when you run the software and select that drive as a destination. Depending on the speed of the connection (USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt), it may take from a little to a lot longer than to do it to your local HD. If that turns out to be very slow, and you want to do a lot of converting at one time, another option is just to save one video to your Mac's drive, and then move it to the external HD while you're converting the next movie.

Answer:	If you use VirtualDub you can output your video in different formats. I output to raw AVI so I can cut my video into smaller segments in Adobe Premiere without sacrificing quality. VHS quality is already so poor, I don't want to lose any of it by re-encoding mp4/h264 files.

Answer:	Absolutely does NOT WORK on the new Thunderbolt 3 ports (USB-C). The feed appears jittery, despite looking fine on the TV. I have tried two different Elgato devices, 3 different USB 3.0 to USB-C adapters (including Apple) and a brand new MacBook Air specifically for this project. I have trouble shot every aspect and video is distorted and jumpy, probably due to data transfer feeds from a USB 2.0 device coming into Thunderbolt ports.

Answer:	This takes a device (in this case a VCR) that has an HDMI output jack (which you say yours does not) to run an HDMI cable going out from it, into this little device, then a 3-plug RCA cable out from this device & into your TV's 3 RCA-input jacks. WRONG FOR YOU. You need one that takes a 3-plug (2-audio & 1-video) RCA cable from the back of your VCR into the little converter then has an HDMI output jack so you can run an HDMI cable out of the device into your TV's HDMI INPUT jack (or one of its multiple HDMI jacks as many TVs have multiple HDMI inputs now). Quentin below is correct, but Anthony & Ron are exactly wrong since you stated your VHS player has NO HDMI jack on it & therefore cannot use this device that can ONLY CONVERT & OUTPUT an INCOMING HDMI signal FROM a VHS into an 3-PLUG RCA signal to a TV (for an simple example such as your type setup). Please check your TV's component video input specifications. Most TVs (including HDMI 1080P TVs) can only support component video input of 1080i. For example, per our lab observation, Sony and Panasonic 1080P TVs with HDMI inputs only support component video input up to 1080i; Toshiba and LG 1080P TVs can support 1080P component video inputs, if you can get 1080i video, but no 1080P video, then it means your HD TV does not support 1080P from its component input (even if your TV is 1080P, it is just good for 1080P from its HDMI input), not because this converter unit does not support 1080P output. If you want to get 1080P video from the component input, please check to make sure your HD TV can support 1080P BEFORE purchasing this item.



Basic operation steps:

1) Connect cables and power adapter. Make sure to match the colors for analog connections.

2) Power on the converter. Set the NTSC/PAL switch, for North America system, please use NTSC setting. Set the audio 2CH or 5.1CH switch using the audio button, for 5.1CH application, use the optical output to connect to an AV receiver.

3) Use the Video button to pick the best output format for the display. If the converter's 1080i output works, but the 1080P output does not work, it means this TV does not support 1080P signal from its component video input, even if this TV is capable of 1080P. Many 1080P TVs only support 1080P from their HDMI inputs.

4) If there is any video noise observed, please use the video button to reset the select video format and wait at least 5mins for the unit to be trained to adapt to the selected format, this only applies to the first application in a particular setup. Do make sure to use quality component video cable to avoid crosstalks and signal degradation.
