13 best weather station mounting ideas
Mounting a weather station is crucial for accurate and reliable weather data collection. Proper placement and positioning can greatly impact the station's performance. Here are some weather station mounting ideas:
Mast or Pole Mounting: Most weather stations are mounted on a mast or pole to elevate them above obstructions on the ground. The height should be sufficient to avoid interference from nearby trees, buildings, or other structures. Metal poles are commonly used as they are sturdy and can resist weather elements.
Roof Mounting: Weather stations can be mounted on the roof of a building, especially in urban areas. This location can provide good exposure to wind and rain without being obstructed by nearby trees or buildings. Ensure that the station is securely anchored to the roof to prevent damage during strong winds.
Wall Mounting: Wall mounting is suitable for smaller weather stations or those in residential settings. The station is attached to a wall bracket or a mounting plate fixed to the side of a building. Ensure it is placed in an area where it can collect accurate data without interference.
Tripod Mounting: Tripod mounts are portable and can be placed on the ground. They are often used for temporary installations or in locations where other mounting options are not feasible. Tripods are typically made of lightweight but durable materials like aluminum.
Tower Mounting: In some cases, especially for research or commercial weather stations, a tower may be used for mounting. These towers can be quite tall and are equipped with multiple sensors at different heights to collect data from various atmospheric levels.
Mast Extensions: To ensure that the weather station is high enough, you can use mast extensions. These are additional sections that can be added to a mast or pole to increase its height. Be sure to secure the extensions properly for stability.
Remote Mounting: In situations where the weather station's sensors need to be separated from the display unit or data logger, remote mounting is an option. Sensors can be mounted on a mast or pole, while the display unit is installed indoors.
Tripod Roof Mounting: For temporary or portable setups on a flat roof, a tripod roof mount can be used. This provides stability without the need for permanent installations.
Antenna Mast Mounting: In some cases, existing antenna masts or structures can be used to mount a weather station. This can save on the cost of additional masts or poles.
Lightning Protection: Regardless of the mounting method chosen, it's essential to install lightning protection to safeguard the weather station from lightning strikes, which can damage the equipment.
When selecting a mounting method, consider factors like the specific requirements of your weather station, local weather conditions, and the availability of suitable mounting structures. Proper mounting ensures that your weather station provides accurate and reliable data for various applications, including satellite TV equipment, audio-video accessories, and electronics.

User questions & answers
Question: | Replacing batteries on a roof-mounted unit is a pain. I have power there, so can it be modified easily |
Answer: | You can convert "anything" battery powered to a AC converted application. Just match your voltage and amperage and seal the hole wire comes through. Easy. Just find a wall wart to match, solder additional lead wires, as required for length. Heat shrink the soldered connection. Given the 4 AA required, and I don't have this unit, my guess is something 5-6 volts with about 800 -1000 mA would work, just check the stats on it. |
Question: | I know the manual says batteries in the display are for backup only, but does anyone know about how long it can survive on batteries |
Answer: | I bought mine in 2016 & just had to change the batteries today 2/28/2020 |
Question: | What is the maximum distance between the outside unit and the display? Does the sensor need to be in the shade |
Answer: | The distance is 330 ft. However be careful where you place the display from the station. Walls and other things can weaken the signal. It depends on what your house is made of. My house is primarily wood. The signal has no problem reaching the other end of my house (about 150 ft I believe). Also don't place the display near computers or radios or other electronic devices. It can cause interference with your station. Now the outside station it self is does not need shading. I actually recommend you place the station as high as possible (like on a pole on your roof, if you can't, place it no lower than 5ft-6ft from the ground) This ensures that your wind readings are accurate. The thermometer and hydrometer sensors are in the sensor and a internal fan circulates air past the sensors from outside, allowing the temperature readings to stay normal in the sun. Also make sure that station is in a wide open area with nothing around the sensor that could block the wind reaching the station. Typically I would say 50 ft from obstacles but I'm not sure how close. A lot of writing a know but hope this helps you! |
Question: | Is this model a true color display, unlike the 01036's monochrome display with a color template |
Answer: | The display looks as it is shown in the picture. It is a color transparent overlay that the data is displayed on. It is bright and easy to read. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do i have to set the time manually or can it get its atomic time from fort collins, i do not see this model on acurite's website which concerns me |
Answer: | I manually set mine. I did not see anywhere in the instructions where it says otherwise or if it can get the Atomic time. The only sensor it has on it is the wireless sensor to work with the outdoor portion of the kit so I'm pretty sure you can only manually adjust it. It was smart enough to adjust for daylight savings a couple weeks ago, but that's the only automatic part of the clock portion that I know of. |
Question: | So the only way you see the data remotely with an iphone/ipad is if it's hooked up to a computer |
Answer: | Yes, otherwise it just displays it on the Weather Station Display. If it is hooked up to the PC, the software is loaded that comes with it and you have an internet connection you will be able to view it anywhere you can access a PC that is also connected to the internet or a smart phone that also has internet capability. |
Question: | Does this station need to be mounted on a pole, or can it be mounted right onto a flat surface |
Answer: | The bracket for the 5 in 1 sensor has the short pole type top for the sensor to mount to and the base of the bracket can mount on top or on the side of a post. I screwed mine down to the top of my pasture fence post. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Can I use this with out a pc and will is save data like year to date rainfall |
Answer: | The display will save some data then you have to download it to a computer. Or you can get the Internet bridge which uploads to a free Acurite account and link it to Weather Underground as a personal weather station. That is what I did, no computer required other than setting up your account and you can view the data from a smartphone app. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use 2 separate display consoles with the ambient weather ws-2902? i'd like to see readings in 2 different areas of the house |
Answer: | I have two display consoles and it works great. One upstairs and one on ground floor. I can see both on-line and on phone via app. I set alerts in case HVAC issues, which is great benefit as well. I ordered WS-2902A-CONSOLE-KIT which is what you need. |
Question: | Can it only be line of sight |
Answer: | Wireless devices transmit a radio frequency (RF) signal, generally in the 400 – 900 MHz range. The manufacturer will rate the maximum transmission distance as line of sight. However, the signal will transmit through walls and other obstructions. The following is a table of reception loss vs. the transmission medium. Each “wall” or obstruction decreases the transmission range by the factor shown below. Medium RF Signal Strength Reduction Glass (untreated) 5-15% Plastics 10-15% Wood 10-40% Brick 10-40% Concrete 40-80% Metal 90-100% RF will not transmit through metal barriers. If you have aluminum siding or a metal roof, it is unlikely the RF signal will transmit through this barrier. RF will not transmit through earth. For example, if the receiver is placed in the basement, and the earth or ground is obstructing the line of sight transmission, it will not receive the signal. Interference can be an issue. In general, wireless internet, phones, security systems and other low power devices have little interference effect. Ham Radio and other high power applications may lose data when transmitting. Helpful Hint: Wireless phones transmit at similar frequencies and power levels as wireless weather devices. If you have a wireless phone (not a cell phone), place the receiver where you would place the weather station receiver and attempt to use the phone where you would place the transmitter. If you can not use the wireless phone, it is unlikely the weather station will work either. |
Question: | Is the outdoor sensor "hi quality"? I have had 2 Acurite outdoor sensors electronics fail in a 1 Yr. I am a full time Rv'r / camp in any weather |
Answer: | My Accuwrong failed in the 13th month and support from Accurite was horrible at best. I had an Amibeint for over 10 years but the ws 2902 is not working, they sent me 3 replacement units all with the same issue, NOT TRANSMITTING. |
Question: | What differentiates this from higher priced options like the ws-1002-wifi? Software connectivity doesn't matter to me. Are the sensors lower quality |
Answer: | No, they are of equal quality. The console on the WS-1002-WiFi is much nicer with multiple screens and TFT display. This is LCD with color film. The WS-2902 is a very capable unit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this sensor to replace the one i currently usemodel tx37u or do i buy a total new set |
Answer: | This isn't a sensor. This is a sensor weather shield. Your sensor that came with your weather station goes inside the shield. If you need a new sensor, you will need to buy that separately. |
Question: | Can this be used with tx141th bv2 sensor that does not have a probe |
Answer: | I have used this shield with three different types of outdoor sensors by different manufactures. If the sensor can fit within the housing of the shield and stand up against the pedestal inside (attached to the pedestal with a sticky tape) then I would say yes it can. None of my sensor have a probe, but the shield is designed to handle a probe as well. Good luck. |
Question: | We here in Colorado, have a lot of wasps (or wasp impersonators) this looks like a perfect starter hive for a queen; anyone seen this |
Answer: | The slots are definitely large enough for wasps. You could slip a rolled up screen inside, but even the vent slots on the bottom would have to be covered as well. I wouldn't try to spray the inside with wasp killer (repels them as well) because the plastic is so cheap it would likely dissolve. My Colorado wasps are not deterred by "bright light" as they built a nest inside one of my outdoor light fixtures/wall sconces where the lights are left on all night (learned that when I got stung changing the bulb!) I just hung them up without any screen or other deterrent. I guess I'll know in a month or two! |
Question: | Is this unit effected wheather it is the direct sunlight or shade |
Answer: | Yes it is. Only is affected by direct sun radiation (9:00 to 14:00), you need to put it at the shade to eliminare the sun effect. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can it be installed in my attic |
Answer: | If you have a digital TV it connects to the TV Port(the round one) if you have an Anolog Tv then you need a converter box. |
Question: | Does it work in below zero weather |
Answer: | Mine didn't work for my area. I sent a message to 1byone and they quickly responded and had a new one sent out to me, no charge. I can not say enough of their exceptional customer service. |
Question: | can you add booster to this antenna for a better singnal |
Answer: | No you definitely do not need to hang it on the window. I placed mine behind my TV. It is more important to have it pointed the correct direction toward the TV antenna that is putting out the signal you are trying to pick up. There are a few good antenna signal websites that show you what way to point your antenna. I used the compass on my phone to see which direction was 270 degrees. That was the direction I needed to point the antenna to pick up the best signals. It works awesome! |
Question: | I live in rural area far away from the tower about 90miles, will it help me |
Answer: | You want to see how many miles the closest receiver is. You want the one as close to that as possible. You don't want to "overshoot" the signal by a lot or it will be looking for one further away and the reception won't be as good. If it's 15 miles you want a 25 mile. If it's 35 miles you want a 50 mile, etc. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can you post a manual for installation for model zb |
Answer: | Don't waste your money, the solar light stopped working 3 months after we bought it, the rain guage is a joke and the thermometer is also a joke. |
Question: | what is up with the rain gauge measure ? how does 1 foot equal 4 inches |
Answer: | Whole thing is wonky. Wind cups don't spin, thermometer is off. The light works well. |
Question: | Does it stores or transmits any collected data |
Answer: | No, it is mostly decorative. Temp and rain seem to be accurate. |
Question: | Our rain gauge broke is there a replacement or what size do I need to look for I can’t find the specifications |
Answer: | don't bother, it will just break again. there are much better gauges for the data. and never let the gauge freeze. bring it inside when low temps are expected. if the issue is how it looks, leave the broken one in the holder, it is now self emptying |

Question: | My wind sensor has stopped tranmitting to the display. I have installed new batteryies twice. Any suggestions |
Answer: | Hello, I can certainly help with that! First, make sure that you are using standard alkaline batteries from a high-quality brand. Once you have verified that you are using recommended batteries, perform the reset below. Please follow the steps carefully as the order is crucial to the success of the reset. Hard Reset: 1. Bring both the sensor and display unit together and power down by removing all batteries from each and/or removing the power cord. 2. Change the A-B-C switch on both units to a new, matching channel. 3. Reinstall the batteries in the outdoor sensor. 4. Reinstall batteries and/or power cord into the display unit. 5. Let the units sit within a couple of feet of each other for approximately 5 minutes or until you see a solid sensor signal. Please contact our support team via live chat or email request on the AcuRite website if the issue persists. Have an exciting day! Haylee AcuRite Support Team |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why doesn’t outside temp register? Inside temp is working I also put in brand new batteries |
Answer: | Check that your batteries are charged to 1.5. If you don't have a way (voltage meter) to check, try brand new batteries that are new off the store shelf. For the sync-up process, the batteries must be 1.5 or better. It's the #1 problem we see. |
Question: | Hello. . . i love this weather station but the aa batteries in my remote die very quickly. what batteries work bet for you |
Answer: | All outdoor sensors should use Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries. Alkalines will freeze, rechargables start at a max of 1.4 v and drop to 1.2 v fairly quickly and do not like extreme cold. They do not work in Iowa winter. All my external sensors use AA Ultimate Lithiums and last the entire winter, even at -15 below zero F. I change them out every Fall. |
Question: | Looking to mount this unit flat on a wall. Wtith power cord attached, would this unit sit flush against the wall |
Answer: | Yes, it can be wall mounted and sit flush against the wall even with the cord attached. |
Question: | Is it necessary to buy the la crosse technology tx141th-bv2 wireless outdoor thermo-hygrometer $19.95 to make the wireless forecast station wireless |
Answer: | If I may say, you might want to reconsider a product from LaCrosse. I have had an s85814 weather station for about 3 years and it currently serves as the night light in my bedroom. It never worked and LaCrosse wasn't much help. The temperature outside was always off by close to 20 degrees. Don't do it, you'll regret it! |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the rod dimension; 1" or |
Answer: | 1.66" OD (outside dimension), which is ironically the size of what is called 1 1/4" pipe. |
Question: | What diameter is the pole |
Answer: | The winegard has a 1 1/2 " inside diameter and 1 5/8 " outside diameter, but the antenna itself has a 1 " diameter, total mismatch. |
Question: | I need to go 18" out from wall to get past gutter. What is the total offset clearance from wall mount bracket to the vertical extension |
Answer: | I purchased and measured this myself and got 23.5” of offset clearance from the wall to the vertical extension. My gutters and eaves also require 18” of clearance to get past the gutters and the 39” DS-3000 easily gets past that. |
Question: | this universal mount has a 1 1/2" tube. The TV antenna is designed for a 1" ID tube. How do I put the two together? I expected that I could mount my antenna directly to this "Universal Mount |
Answer: | What I did was go to Home Depot and buy a threaded 1" O.D. pipe. I also got an adapter there that steps the 1" up to 1 1/8" or 1/14"...either is okay. I then bought a rubber union with two hose clamps attached to it. I inserted the 1" pipe into the adapter, and the adapter into the rubber union. I fastened one clamp on the adapter, the other end onto the 1+1/2" antenna mast. I bought silver paint to match the mast and the parts....and the black rubber union. Paited it all, hooked the antenna up to the 1" pipe...Voila...done! |
