What the seller ("Monoprice") wrote is wrong, most likely he is applying the definition of "Balanced" used for other electronic components, e.g. microphones. Balanced in the world of coax splitters means that the signal from all outputs is the same (and different for unbalanced). The number of outputs for this splitter is a power of 2 (i.e. 8=2*2*2 = 2^3). So, it is balanced. I would even say "naturally balanced", as it would take a special effort to make it unbalanced. When you have an even number of outputs, the easiest design is to have the splitter unbalanced, - e.g. 3, the easiest way to realize it is by splitting the signal 2-ways, and then splitting one of those outputs 2-ways again. Each 2-way split gives you about 3.5 dB attenuation. So, you would have -3.5 dB on one leg, and -7dB on two others. On a balanced 3-way splitter you'd get -5.5dB. So, any splitter whose number of outputs is a power of 2 (i.e. 2, 4, 8, 16) are "naturally" unbalanced. While in principle, when you have other even number of outputs (6, 10, 12, 14), - those could be balanced and unbalanced (think of a 6-way as a combination of a 2-way and two 3-ways), - in reality, all even-output-number splitters that I've seen sold are balanced. |
