The way that the side kick works is that the side kick literally copies the signal that is being sent out by the original remote when you press a button on that remote and it stores that signal for whatever button you tell the side kick you want to program. This isn't your typical universal remote that can be programmed using stored codes to control other devices and many of those devices basic functions but it's useful. For instance I programmed my side to be able to turn on my sound bar, volume up, volume down and mute, which required using 4 of the 8 buttons. The other 4 buttons are used to turn my TV on, change source input of TV, volume up and volume down of the TV.
