12 best usb dacs
A USB DAC, or USB Digital-to-Analog Converter, is a device that converts digital audio signals from your computer or other digital audio sources into analog signals that can be sent to headphones, speakers, or other audio playback devices. This conversion process is necessary because many modern devices, such as laptops and smartphones, have built-in DACs, but they may not always provide the best audio quality. USB DACs are commonly found in the Amps, Headphone Accessories, Audio Video Accessories, Accessories Supplies, and Electronics categories. Here's what you should know about USB DACs:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a USB DAC is to improve the audio quality of your digital audio sources. It takes the digital audio signal from your computer or smartphone, processes it, and converts it into an analog signal that can be played through headphones or speakers.
Connection: USB DACs connect to your device via a USB port. They are often plug-and-play devices, which means they don't require additional drivers for most operating systems.
Headphone Amplification: Many USB DACs also include a headphone amplifier (amp) to provide additional power to drive high-impedance headphones. This can result in better audio quality and improved volume levels, especially for audiophiles and music enthusiasts.
Audio Quality: USB DACs are known for delivering superior audio quality compared to the built-in DACs found in most consumer devices. They can reduce interference and noise, resulting in clearer, more accurate sound reproduction.
Compatibility: USB DACs are compatible with various operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. They can work with a wide range of audio formats and bit depths, making them versatile for different audio sources.
Portability: Some USB DACs are compact and portable, making them suitable for use with laptops or smartphones on the go. They can significantly enhance the audio experience when listening to music, watching movies, or playing games.
Bit Depth and Sample Rate: USB DACs often support different bit depths (e.g., 16-bit, 24-bit) and sample rates (e.g., 44.1 kHz, 192 kHz).Higher bit depths and sample rates can result in more accurate audio reproduction, especially for high-resolution audio files.
Price Range: USB DACs are available in a wide price range, from budget-friendly options to high-end models with advanced features. The price often correlates with the quality of audio components and additional features like built-in headphone amplifiers.
Brand Diversity: Various manufacturers produce USB DACs, offering consumers a choice of brands and models to suit their preferences and budgets.
Usage Scenarios: USB DACs are popular among audiophiles, music producers, and anyone who seeks improved audio quality from their digital devices. They can be used for music listening, gaming, video editing, and other audio-intensive tasks.
In summary, USB DACs are audio accessories that enhance the audio quality of digital devices by providing high-quality digital-to-analog conversion and, in some cases, headphone amplification. They are versatile and compatible with various devices, making them a valuable addition to any audio setup, whether for casual listening or professional use.

Question: | Will the k3 be enough for the beyerdynamics dt 990 250 ohm |
Answer: | In performance, both models incorporate the 32-bit ESS Sabre DAC chip, the 9010 in Black and the higher-performance 9016 in Red. While the Black uses the same headphone amp and analog volume control found in previous version, the new Red includes the latest ESS headphone amp and a bit-perfect digital volume control that resides on the 9016 DAC chip itself. In power the Black puts out 1.2 volts: enough power to drive all preamplifier input circuits and a wide range of efficient headphones. The red with its higher 2.1-volt output will be compatible with a wider range of headphones, including power-hungry, low-efficiency model. |
Question: | Does the knob control the Line Out volume on the K |
Answer: | I hesitated to answer this question since it's about 4 years old now, but I'm sure somebody else will be wondering the same thing. I must say it's one of the most illogically comical questions that I've ever read. Let me explain. It's like asking if using jet fuel will improve the grass cutting performance of a lawnmower. Obviously, it won't. You just need a more efficient lawnmower. The DAC + preamp + plus headphone amp merely will make the headphones louder but NOT make them sound better. In fact, most low-cost headphones (in the $10 - $30 range) typically suffer from sibilance (hiss), muffled bass, tinny highs, too dominant mid-range, and distortion at higher volumes due to using low-quality components. Therefore, it's highly probable that the AudioQuest DragonFly will make cheap headphones sound exponentially worse. As the old saying goes: "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." |
Question: | If both outputs are connected, one to headphones and the other to speakers for example, can I choose to have sound only in one of them at a time |
Answer: | Yes, the Creative Sound Blaster Play! 3 features the 31 Hz band and +/- 24db choice. |

Can I connect the K3 with an iOS or Android device?
The K3 is a USB power and data combo interface, designed for desktop computers or laptop. Mobile devices are not recommended.
1. What does the K3 indicator mean?
The K3 uses RGB indicator; the USB power plug in, the power switch turn on, and red or yellow may be displayed in the non-playback state; The current audio quality can be indicated only in the normal playback state: 1, blue ≤ 48khz sampling rate2, yellow >48khz sampling rate3, green DSD format
2. Can I connect the K3 with an iOS or Android device?
The K3 is a USB power and data combo interface, designed for desktop computers or laptop. Mobile devices are not recommended.
3. Can the K3's coaxial and optical outpu work at the same time? And what sample rate are supported for the both outputs?
A:K3's coaxial and optical can output simultaneously with the headphone port, and is not subject to volume control. Coaxial can support up to 192k/24bit and DSD64 DOP output, while Optical can support up to 96k/24bit.
4. Why sometimes there is no sound when K3's coaxial and optical output is connected to the speaker?
A: When the PC player output device is set to "KS"or "ASIO", the sampling rate of K3's Coaxial and Optical output is followed by the tracks themselves. However, most speakers on the market with SPDIF input only support 48kHz sampling rate, so there will be no sound output. For this kind of use environment, it is recommended to set the output device to "DS" or "wave out" on the music program on your computer.
5. Can the K3's balanced headphone output and 3.5mm single-ended headphone output work at the same time?
A: The K3's balanced output has a higher priority than the 3.5mm single-ended(SE) Headphone out, so when the K3 is connected to both the 2.5mm balanced and 3.5mm SE headphones, only the balanced output port will output sound.
6. What is the difference between USB AUDIO 1.0/2.0 in K3? How to operate and make it work?
A: In order to meet the flexible use of K3, we have designed two modes. 1. USB AUDIO 1.0 does not need to install the driver, and please connect the K3 with the computer and then play songs directly. it could support up to 96k/24bit. 2. USB AUDIO 2.0 is required to install FiiO official driver firstly. The lastest DAC Driver is v4.47.0: on our website It could support up to 384k/32bit and DSD256. After the two modes are switched, you need to re-plug the USB or power the K3 on/off to make the USB AUDIO mode take effect.

Question: | I emailed the company. They stated by their email that the digitals were inputs. I am getting conflicting reports. Anyone sure if digital is in or out |
Answer: | If you are on a Windows machine, you'll want to download foobar2000 to use as your dedicated music player. There are many forums online which go into great detail on how to set up foobar2000 as it does appear to be quite complicated at first glance so I won't bore you with any of the specifics here; but once you get the hang of things it does get a bit easier to understand and follow the UI and the possibilities you have with foobar2000. You just have to do your research; Amazon is not the best place for this sort of thing if you ask me. I personally prefer ASIO over WASAPI; FiiO has their own proprietary ASIO driver uniquely designed for the E10K which you can download the firmware for on their website. You will also have to download and install the necessary ASIO support component which is available on foobar2000's website. If you do buy this DAC/AMP and plan on using FiiO's ASIO driver like I do, be aware that you have to close out of all applications using ASIO before disconnecting the E10K, otherwise this may result in a BSOD. They explicitly state this in the owner's manual as well. Lastly, but most importantly you will want to listen to high quality audio sources (READ: Lossless audio). I prefer FLAC encoded music files, but lossless is lossless; it doesn't really matter what codec the files are in. I won't discuss bit depths or sample rates here because that's just another can of worms, but do your best to avoid listening to lossy audio files such as MP3s; you will only be doing yourself a disservice. And of course you want to have some decent headphones :) If you fancy closed back headphones, I can strongly recommend the SRH1540s by Shure. It's what I'm using at the moment. So as you can see, there's just a little more to it than just 'plugging in the E10K and voila' ;) Happy listening! |
Question: | The USB is for the power ONLY correct? The inputs for sound are only from optical and coaxial, yes? My laptop has no opt or coax |

User questions & answers
Question: | I see the d1 has usb input. i don't have a sound card in my pc, do i still need to get one if i get d1 to improve the sound quality? thanks |
Answer: | I think the answer is two part: (1) yes it will work with high resolution flac files, at least with my test over usb. I downloaded a test (24bit/352.8kHz) file and everything was fine. (2) As alx already stated, valid sampling rates are 32/44/48, so I believe down/up sampling will need to occur with other sources. |
Question: | Does this DAC require LPCM or PCM in S/PDIF input signal. Most TV has option to output in PCM format but not all. My LG DU-37LZ30 has DTS/AC-3 output |
Answer: | I'll test this when I get home. I haven't tried to use the toslink port on my DAC, but I'll follow up within the next five or six hours.Edit: I can only conclude that the USB connection is the only input and that the optical is out. I connected this unit via TOSLINK to my PC's optical port, and then connected the USB cable to a USB power adapter in a power strip to guarantee that no actual input is running over USB. After connecting headphones to the 3.5mm out jack and making my motherboard's optical jack the default device, I received no sound regardless of bitrate setting.I then unplugged everything and connected the USB cable to a computer instead of a power strip, making the computer's default playback device the USB DAC. I ran the TOSLINK from the Signstek DAC to a FiiO TAISHAN D03K TOSLINK to 3.5mm/RCA DAC and connected my headphones to the FiiO unit. As I type this, I'm listening to music from my computer using this configuration. It seems that the only use for this unit's optical jack is out, effectively allowing this to be both a USB DAC and a USB to TOSLINK adapter, bypassing its abilities as a DAC. Very handy if, for example, you have a laptop that lacks optical out and you have a pricey optical in-only DAC that you'd like to use with the laptop. That being said, if anyone can get this unit to behave as an optical in DAC, please let me know how you've done this. If I can replicate it, I'll happily edit my answer accordingly. |
Question: | Will the analog outputs be bypassed if a headphone is connected at the same time |
Answer: | The USB is the ONLY input for both power AND the digital audio signal passed from a USB device outputting a digital audio signal. The Optical and Coaxial are digital OUTPUTS to feed the digital input of another device or DAC. The Headphone and (L) (R) are analog outputs to feed the analog inputs of some kind of amplifier that then feeds speakers. If you can do without the optical digital output on this device, I suggest the slightly smaller Muse Mini USB DAC here : https://www.amazon.com/USB-DAC-PCM2704-Optical-Converter/dp/B0093KZTEA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1482862640&sr=8-4&keywords=usb+mini+dac They have the same DAC chip and in my personal side by side comparison in my high-end desktop stereo setup I preferred the sound of the headphone outputs of the smaller unit to either the headphone or RCA outputs of the larger unit here. Yes, different implementations of the same chip sound different. Regards... |
Question: | So Macs have good internal DACs, can someone comment on how much better this unit makes music sound while running off a Mac (I have a 2013 Mac Air |

User questions & answers
Question: | What's the output impedance |
Answer: | The Recommend headphones for this device is between 32- 600 ohms. Some reviewers suggest 600 ohms, As for the RCA output I'm not sure but it has enough gain to drive my Denon amp |
Question: | What recommended to do? plugging the dac with usb or dc power? what will be the best option |
Answer: | Hi. As far as I know, this DAC can be connected only with the power cable. No USB charge available. |
Question: | I have a pair if beyerdynamic dt900! will this amp improve sound quilty and volume? using headphone for playing while drumming |
Answer: | It will depend the impedance of the headphone itself, because of the fact that the amp is relatively low power, but I can’t say if it will be an improvement if I don’t know what you are comparing it to. But compared to a phone or a laptop, it is a significant improvement |
Question: | Is there any line noise or pooping sound when taking in optical audio output from a computer? Any popping when music stops playing |
Answer: | I’ve never had any line noise or popping using optical. That is via a TV not computer but can’t imagine it would be different. The only popping I’ve ever had was if the power was pulled from the unit and then plugged back in while the volume was up but you shouldn’t ever need to unplug it, it doesn’t run hot or draw power when the switch is off. |

User questions & answers
Question: | To all experts. would this fully use the sennheiser pc363d 7.1 surround? i'm looking to replace the usb dolby sound card that comes with it |
Answer: | From the FAQ on Audioengine's site:Q: The D1 is connected to the optical output of my TV but I'm not getting any sound. What can I do?A: In your TV menu verify that "PCM STEREO" is selected and "DOLBY DIGITAL" is off.So it presumably only supports PCM over S/PDIF. |
Question: | its work with android or ios |
Answer: | Yes Zack. The analog RCA's are disconnected if headphones are plugged into the D1. I wish it was a bit more flexible but that's the way it is with this unit. |
Question: | Is this also a DAC |
Answer: | I disagree with KM. Haven't tried this AudioEngine DAC, but the NUforce Mac-specific DAC I own makes a noticeable difference, mostly in the clarity of the highs. It makes the Mac's built-in DAC sound shrill. On lower-end headphones it might not be detectable. And, of course, everyone's hearing is different. I can listen to Google Play streaming much longer on my Sennheiser HD280 Pro headphones through an external DAC than without one. |
Question: | Can this drive the Sennheiser HD |
Answer: | Should work with any Android 5.1 device. I use an OTG Y cable - so that this doesn't draw on the phone for power.https://www.amazon.com/Tendak-Micro-Cable-Adapter-Tablets/dp/B00V81L9M8/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell |
Answer: | Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a |
Answer: | Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side |
Answer: | Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

User questions & answers
Question: | What to do when the mic port stops working |
Answer: | Yes, depending on the source of the audio you are listening to. Most built in soundcards in laptops cannot surpass anything above CD quality. If you have the right source, this supports audio in the ranges of DVD Audio, SACD, and 24bit 96KHz vinyl rips. |
Question: | Does the device offer for 2 audio sources to play at the same time? For example, game/chat audio from a ps4 and music from a pc |
Answer: | It is a standard USB audio interface so it should work and any modern computer, be it Mac, Windows or most Linux. |
Question: | can this support 250ohms? I'm getting a headset set soon that's 240ohms and I wanted to make sure this amp can push this headset to its full potential |
Answer: | There is no line in port. Source is the usb , which stays plugged in all the time. The computer sound card is replaced with the usb dac, so their is no "mix". You can hear the source on the headphones om the dac, but not the jack on the computer. |
Question: | Difference between this and the silver one?syba sonic usb 24 bit 96 khz dac digital to analog headphone amplifier 2 stage eq digital / coaxial outpu |
