12 best new banana plugs
New banana plugs are popular connectors used in the audio and video industry, primarily for making secure and high-quality connections between speakers, amplifiers, receivers, and other audio/video equipment. Here's what you should know about new banana plugs and their related applications:
Design and Purpose: Banana plugs are a type of connector designed for quick and reliable connections. They have a cylindrical or bullet-like shape with a metal pin or wire that can be inserted into the binding post or terminal of audio and video equipment. Their main purpose is to facilitate the connection and disconnection of wires without the need for soldering or stripping the wires.
Compatibility: Banana plugs are commonly used in the context of home theater systems, stereo setups, and professional audio installations. They are compatible with a wide range of equipment, including speakers, amplifiers, AV receivers, and even some high-end headphones.
Benefits:
- Enhanced Sound Quality: Banana plugs provide a secure and low-resistance connection, which can help maintain the integrity of the audio signal and minimize signal loss.
- Convenience: They make it easy to connect and disconnect speakers and other components, which is especially useful for setups that require frequent changes or adjustments.
- Safety: Banana plugs can help prevent accidental wire fraying or short-circuits by ensuring a clean and insulated connection.
- Aesthetics: They can give your setup a clean and organized appearance by neatly managing your cable connections.
Types:
- Standard Banana Plugs: These are the most common type, featuring a cylindrical shape with a single metal pin.
- Dual Banana Plugs: Designed for bi-wiring or bi-amping setups, these have two pins for connecting to separate sections of a speaker or amplifier binding post.
- Stackable Banana Plugs: These plugs have a design that allows multiple plugs to be stacked on top of each other, making it easy to connect multiple speakers or components to a single binding post.
Termination Methods:
- Screw-Type: These plugs have a threaded body that can be tightened onto the wire, ensuring a secure connection.
- Solder-Type: Some banana plugs require soldering the wire to the connector for a permanent connection.
Colors and Coding: Banana plugs often come in various colors or with color-coded rings to help identify and organize connections in complex audio/video setups.
Wall Plates and Distribution: Banana plugs are frequently used with wall plates and distribution systems. Wall plates with banana plug terminals can help keep your connections tidy and accessible in home theater installations.
Quality and Materials: The quality of banana plugs can vary, with higher-end models typically made from high-quality materials like gold-plated connectors or oxygen-free copper for improved conductivity.
Cost: The cost of banana plugs can vary widely depending on factors such as materials, brand, and features. While basic banana plugs are affordable, premium options may come at a higher price.
When selecting new banana plugs for your audio/video setup, consider your specific needs, the compatibility of your equipment, and the desired level of convenience and quality. High-quality banana plugs can contribute to improved sound and simplified cable management in your AV system.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this one speaker cable? Or two |
Answer: | It came with instructions on how to change out the battery.. I haven’t opened the jumper up to see if there’s a switch or not but maybe just take the battery out of it |
Question: | How long are the plugs themselves? Trying to figure out how far they stick out. I'm limited on space in my cabinet |
Answer: | The Maverick says it’s for 40-80 lbs, but now my 55 lb son bottoms out on it after having for 1 year. This is made in China and I question the accuracy of the weight limits. |
Question: | Is this speaker wire copper clad aluminum or pure copper |
Answer: | I am not sure, but I think so. The write-up says "For ages 5-9 40-80 pounds." Our grandson was probably about 48 pounds when we got this for him a year ago, and he was bouncing away immediately on it. However, he jumped hard enough and high enough that pretty soon the pogo stick was bottoming out; the spring was collapsing completely when he'd come down, so he'd land with an uncomfortable thunk. He pretty much stopped using it after about 6 months, because the hard landings were so unpleasant. |
Question: | Will these work well with Klipsch Reference Premiere speakers or is there better ones |
Answer: | I would go with the heaviest duty type. |

Answer: | 5-8mm |
Question: | Do the two screws both go through the copper wire? Or does one just apply pressure to the outer shielding |
Answer: | 4mm. Most standard banana plugs are. If you needed the 2mm or 3mm variety you would need to look for mini-banana plugs. |
Question: | I bought the highest end version direct from website how come when I filled down the spades becauses they did not work it was a silver collor metal |
Answer: | The ones I bought are for 10 and 12 gauge wire, they will work for 16 gauge wire but the wire will need to be anchored and secured tightly to the jack to avoid the wire bending back and forth and breaking. |

User questions & answers
Question: | im trying to make my own test leads for different applications, will these work/fit with a voltmeter |
Answer: | Depends. It should fit as the multimeters use standard banana plug socket innerds, but for years commercial test leads have no longer used bare plugs because of the hazards associated with accidental contact which would be shockingly dangerous if working with high voltage (yes, these meters are routinely used in high voltage electrical applications - my meter carries a CAT III rating for use with 1000V, CAT IV for 600 V). BUT, I mainly use my meter on ham radio stuff and sometimes on cars - all low voltage DC applications.I just ordered these to make a current (amperage) test rig with Anderson Power Pole sockets. Again, I stress that I am working with voltage running significantly less than 30V (sometimes 24 V systems in aviation or other automotive systems), but I will wrap the plug bodies in heat shrink insulation to minimize likelihood of contact. |
Question: | I've read that these plugs can accept 12-18 AWG wire; however, I'd like to know what you all have used/what is working best |
Answer: | I use 12 gauge on my fronts and 14 on my surrounds with no issues. The 12 gauge was a little difficult to get wrapped back around and then screw down, but I really don't know of any banana plug that would we easier, without going to the kind where they use a screw to fasten. This is the easier, cleaner look in my opinion! |
Question: | The description says: "Can accept bare wire and spades. " How do you connect spades |
Answer: | As PCKIDZ replied, this is a two function connector. The banana plugs are pushed into the hole in the end.If you unscrew the barrel which is knurled, the smaller shaft is exposed, where you can slip on your spade lug and then tighten the knurled shaft to secure the lug. |
Question: | whats the differance between open screw and closed screw banna plugs |
Answer: | "Open Screw" type plug (side wire) allows for daisy chaining or stacking additional banana plugs to the back. This is desirable in DJ applications if you're running a speakers in parallel and if your amp can handle the low impedances. Closed Screw type has the wire at the back. |

User questions & answers
Question: | My integrated amplifier doesnot have a preout, can I use these from my amplifier speaker terminals to connect my subwoofers rca cables to line in |
Answer: | Probably not. Input usually means that some sort of powered device is sending a signal into your device. look for the subwoofer output. When you find it, trouble shoot your connections from that location. The answer then may be gleaned from one of the other questions regarding hooking up subwoofer to the lfe output. |
Question: | what gauge wire is used |
Answer: | Not if you tin the ends. Screws won't engage to tighten against the wires. 16 gauge would probably be ok. |
Question: | Can these be used for the lead wires on a tens unit |
Answer: | both sides are screw tight, no solder with this model |
Question: | This for connecting a turntable to a harmon karman receiver that has no phono input? if not what do i need? thank you |
Answer: | Yes if you know what your doing |

Answer: | Yes you are correct, this is a 4mm Banana plug. |
Product description
Silverback Speaker Wire from Sewell offers deeper bass, greater clarity, better imaging, and cleaner highs from your connected loudspeakers and AV receiver. We've developed this speaker with the highest quality standards in mind. Instead of getting 90 to 100 threads of copper in 12 AWG wire, we've put 259 strands of copper into each conductor. Not only does an incredibly high strand count bring greater flexibility to your installation, but it also allows the current to travel around each strand (259) so that the speaker setup can play with less distortion at higher levels because it can move more efficiently. This is called the “Skin Effect” of speaker wire. Silverback Speaker Wire was designed to overcome all obstacles that plague audio fidelity.
- 12 AWG wire
- Oxygen Free Manufacturing
- 259 Strand Count
- Pure Copper
- Premium Jacket for Durability
User questions & answers
Question: | These are sold as a 2-pack for around the same price on Sewell's own website. Are there two cables (2 sets of red/black) for two speakers |
Answer: | The top, where the stem attached to the tree -- where you normally start peeling the banana. But, no need to peel first before using these, as they will plug right into the stem. |
Question: | Can I use these speaker wires which are 12 gauge from a wall plate to my receiver if my in wall wire is 14 guage |
Answer: | I read somewhere that says the gauge number is actually a fraction of an inch. So the higher the fraction the smaller the wire. e.g. 1/12" is larger than 1/16" |
Question: | it is one cable or it is a pair |
Answer: | No. It's a single conductor. |
Question: | Can I cut one banana plug end to use bare wire with standard "clamp" terminal on stereo, even though the speakers I have are binding post connector |
Answer: | It is pretty simple. You should have a whole in the middle of where your speaker wire hooks in. Instead of using raw wire you can attach it to the plug and then plug it in the receiver jack. |
Product features
Silverback Pre-Terminated Cable

- Can accept bare wire, spades, or other banana plugs. Can accept 12 to 18 AWG speaker wires.

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you connect these to a 12 volt "go Box" cover |
Answer: | I do not know what a "go box" is. |
Question: | When you disconnect the plugs, isn't it easy to short them by touching each other? looks like the whole piece is the same conductor |
Answer: | If I understand your question correctly, once the plugs are disconnected from the receiver, there is no signal going through them, therefore no danger of short. You shouldn't be connecting or disconnecting the speakers with the unit on. Actually more likely to short out trying to install using bare wire connections instead of banana clips. The clips cover the bare wire so no chance of a stray strand or two shorting across the back of your component. |
Question: | I have used open screw plugs for years; are there any substantial advantages to the closed screw type |
Answer: | The big advantage is when installed correctly, you won't have any chance of stray wires sticking out. So then less chance of shorting the wires. On 14 gauge and smaller wire, it shouldn't be that hard to do to install correctly, easily. On 12 gauge wire, the maximum recommended for the monoprice plugs, the insulation doesn't fit very well into the body of the plug, so you just have to strip more insulation off to get it to go easier. One possible downside to them is that the wires stick straight out the back instead of coming out of the side. If you have wall mount speakers with a narrow clearance, that could be an issue. But you could get the open screw style to fix that. At the receiver, it was beneficial to me. |
Question: | How do you connect these (closed and open type) to the speaker wire |
Answer: | First I unscrew the banana connector, splice the wire and stick the open wire through the hole and fold it over the threading, then I screw the banana connector back together. I use two pairs of vise grips as it gets a little tough screwing them back together by hand since the wire catches the threads on the banana connectors. Hope this helped |
