14 best speaker selectors
Speaker selectors, also known as speaker selector switch boxes, are audio components used in home audio systems to distribute audio signals from a single source to multiple speakers or speaker zones. These devices are commonly used in situations where you want to play music or audio in different rooms or areas of your home, allowing you to control which speakers receive the audio signal.
Key features and information about speaker selectors:
Audio Distribution: Speaker selectors are primarily designed to distribute audio signals from a central source (such as a stereo receiver or amplifier) to multiple sets of speakers located in different rooms or zones. This enables you to listen to music or audio in various parts of your home simultaneously or individually.
Zone Control: One of the primary functions of a speaker selector is to provide zone control. This means you can select which speakers or zones receive the audio signal. For example, you can choose to play music in the living room, bedroom, or both, depending on your preferences.
Impedance Matching: Many speaker selectors come with impedance matching capabilities. Impedance matching ensures that the speakers connected to the selector receive the appropriate amount of power, preventing damage to the amplifier and maintaining sound quality. This is particularly important when connecting multiple speakers.
Multiple Speaker Sets: Speaker selectors typically feature connections for several pairs of speakers. Some models allow you to connect as few as two pairs, while others support more extensive setups with multiple zones and speakers.
Volume Control: Some speaker selectors include individual volume controls for each speaker pair or zone. This allows you to adjust the volume independently for different areas, accommodating varying preferences and room sizes.
Protection Circuitry: Many speaker selectors include protection circuitry to safeguard your amplifier against overload and short circuits. This added protection helps prevent damage to your audio equipment.
Manual or Remote Control: Depending on the model, speaker selectors may offer manual control via physical switches or remote control options. Remote-controlled selectors provide convenient access to zone selection and volume adjustment from a distance.
Audio Sources: You can connect various audio sources to the central amplifier, including CD players, streaming devices, turntables, and more. The selector allows you to choose which source you want to distribute to the selected speakers.
Installation: Speaker selectors are typically installed near the audio source and connected to the amplifier. Speaker wires are then run from the selector to each pair of speakers or zones.
Compatibility: Ensure that the speaker selector you choose is compatible with your audio equipment, including the amplifier's power output and the impedance ratings of your speakers.
Speaker selectors are valuable accessories for creating a multi-room audio system in your home, allowing you to enjoy music or audio in various areas while maintaining control and flexibility over your audio setup. They are commonly used in home theaters, distributed audio systems, and whole-house audio setups.

User questions & answers
Question: | I want to use this on two sets of speakers, one set for front height & second set for side surrounds and switch between the two. Is it possible |
Answer: | I have speakers throughout my house. The Pyle Six-zone box allows me to have music in most every room. Hook each speaker you have to the Pyle and hook the Pyle to your receiver, speaker A or B. I have mine on B. Connect your receiver audio to your TV audio. There is a separate button on the Pyle that you should always keep positioned to on (button in). That is the easiest I can make it for you. This box works perfect for me and has never shut off. Good luck to you. |
Question: | Does this switch allow me to control sets of speakers independently |
Answer: | I am running an older Technics amp 2x100 6 pairs of speakers at times so I would say yes. Just remember you are putting this amp to a lot of work if you're running 6 pairs of speakers so watch the temps on the amp. |
Question: | One person indicated what they believed the protection button was. Does anybody know? Pyle technical support apparently doesn't exist |
Answer: | Maybe. The more speakers that you connect the lower their effective impedance as seen by the amplifier. And the lower the effective impedance the higher the current that the amplifier must generate in order to drive the speakers to a specific listening level without distortion. Most speakers, particularly the less costly ones, have a nominal 8 ohm impedance. So if you are driving one set of such speakers the amplifier will be seeing an 8 ohm load. But if your amplifier is driving 2 sets of such speakers the amplifier will be seeing 1/(1/8 + 1/8) = a 4 ohm load; if your amplifier is driving 3 sets of such speakers the amplifier will be seeing a 1/(1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8) = 2.7 ohm load, etc. With 6 speakers your amplifier will be seeing a 1.3 ohm load. And this would be a nominal and typically maximum load; in practice the load fluctuates depending on frequency and is effectively lower for short periods of time. Some amplifiers are designed to drive such low loads but many are not. If you try to do that with such a low current amplifier for a long period of time you will burn up the amplifier. That is why speaker selectors like this one have a protection button which basically adds a resistance in series with the speakers in order to increase the impedance seen by the amplifier. This will reduce the overall efficiency and you will notice that you have to increase the volume to get the same amount of sound as with the protection button off.So, if your amplifier has a sufficient current capability to drive those 6 speakers to your desired listening levels, great. If it doesn't, and if the listening level is too low for your tastes with the protection button on, you will need to either settle for lower volume or get a more powerful amplifier. |
Question: | How do I hook this up to my 5.1 receiver |
Answer: | The sound is great there is no distortion. |

User questions & answers
Question: | will the Monoprice 109995 accommodate 14 gauge wire |
Answer: | According to the user manual, it can accommodate up to 14 AWG.http://www.monopricehub.com/files/manuals/9995_Manual_130103.pdf |
Question: | the output of my Denon 1912 is 90W per channel. This is rated at 70W. Can it support my Denon |
Answer: | My Pioneer Elite (Model VSX53 if you want to double check the specs) is rated at 110 w/channel and this splitter works just fine. I've had no issues. |
Question: | Can I use this in reverse? Multiple amps to one pair of speakers |
Answer: | In theory you can. Use the speaker select switches to hook up the amplifier speaker outputs. Hook the one set of speakers you wish to share to the connector labled amplifier input. But be warned DO NOT select both amps at once. If you are lucky, you will blow the speaker fuse, if it’s got one. At worst you will trip the amp protection circuit or blow an internal fuse. |
Question: | can you run all 4-channels at the same time |
Answer: | I could not get the darn thing to work at all. I bought a NEW Denon 5+1 receiver and had extra cables to outiside deck speakers (should have gotten 7+1) that could not hook up as I had four surround plus sub and center channel in LR. Thought this would allow me to get the outside speakers working like a splitter that I could turn on and off. Was wrong or either not using correctly but does not very complex. I pushed every single combination of buttons and never got any sound to go through outside OR inside. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will fit on slider rack shelf with 16 inches wide and 15 inches deep? thank you |
Answer: | Good question. There are two things you should know before you pull the trigger on this. Banana plugs don’t insert far enough to stay put, and since I have this box hooked up to amplified speakers I kept getting a buzz. I bought special banana plug pig tails which I ended up removing because of said problem. What did work very well for me was to remove the banana plugs and strip and solder the speaker wires then tighten the threaded part against the inserted wire in the hole on the shaft, a very tight connection and that worked great. The other issue is you can’t turn off one the speakers which was reported in one of the comments. It is annoying but for my application one set of speakers is downstairs with their own volume control so, I just adjust the volume on them when in use. Hope this helps. |
Question: | I don't understand the description. what does the a /b button at each speaker volume control mean? doesn't the speaker pairs selected play together |
Answer: | Hi, I have one of these (returning the 1st one due to poor speaker terminal , I find that it will accept a 4mm and thicker Banana Plug. Amazon's model was poor fit, but MediaBridge's plug in more securely. I have not fully connected my XtremePro yet, but I hope this helps. |
Question: | Can the speaker connectors take banana plugs as opposed to threading the wires |
Answer: | I may not be understanding your question correctly, but with this item I am using the volume control on my amp for the front speakers and the volume on this device to control the volume on the rear speakers. So yes, I can set one set of speakers at a different volume that the other. Again, if I am understanding your question correctly. |
Question: | So I can hook up 4 sets of speakers on my new Pyle unit all on one receiver without worry of damage? Looked like chart had impedence fall off to |
Answer: | Yes as far as I can tell. Aka-when I only have on speaker on and flip the switch to turn another group on, the volume drops. It’s not necessarily half the volume though. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am installing in-wall speakers in multiple rooms. My question is what is the best cheapest in-wall volume controller that would work with this speaker selector |
Answer: | There is no difference in for the install if you mount speakers in the wall or ceiling. |
Question: | Several questions, How do you hook it to your stereo, I am hard of hearing so I hooked 3speakers to my stereo system, this is hooked to my tv when I turn it up some times it turns off by it self I do not understand that I would like more speakers all the 5 star reviews makes this product sound real good. the receiver |
Answer: | I think so. They mount with a screw and clamp. The screw is accessible behind the removable front grill. The speaker comes with a template so you know what size to cut out in the wall or ceiling. After you insert the speaker into the recess, as you turn the screw, it tightens the clamp onto drywall, securing it in place. Although it is designed for drywall, I think it will work on anything with approximately the same thickness (~3/4 inch thick). |
Question: | How Do You Hook A PSS6 Speaker Selector To A Pyle PCAU46A |
Answer: | I would recommend a 5.1 home audio receiver. |
Question: | can i play all 6 speakers at the same time |
Answer: | The pyle pta44bt would be a good amp for the speakers. |

Question: | Is this rack mountable |
Answer: | Hi, no it is not mountable. However, you may customize your own rackmount. Thank you. |
Question: | can I use this amp with my sony str 1030 reciever to add additional power |
Answer: | This is not an amp. It takes an output to speakers and can run different sets of speakers. If you do not have enough power in your receiver to run the speakers it will not work. Each time you turn on a set of speakers it will drop the power by a percentage. Some receivers can not handle more then three sets. |
Question: | Can one of the zones I hook to be a powered subwoofer (which itself feeds a pair of small speakers |
Answer: | No you cannot hook up a powered sub woofer to a speaker selector |
Question: | Will this work with an old devon dra 35v receiver from the mid 80s? i have 4 pairs of speakers and might need to use at least three pairs at a time |
Answer: | I do not recognize the Receiver you are referring to but the connections are very simple. The speaker wires that are driving your speakers will be shortened and then connected to the Pyle Home speaker selector. Then your speakers will be connected to the Pyle Home speaker selector to each of the different four zones that you have in your home/office/whatever. I am presently driving three pairs of speakers with one zone unused. I have had perfect performance. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this model handle 8-ohm speakers? Niles' website states that 4-ohm speakers should be used |
Answer: | i used 8 ohm speakers. didn't realize there was a recommendation. |
Question: | Could I run 5 surround sound speakers from my living room plus 4-6 other speakers throughout the house through this selector and my receiver |
Answer: | If you are talking about using the Zone 2 on your receiver to power 4-6 other speakers you could but it would not be the best thing to do. one thing you have to make sure is that your speakers all have the same Ohm rating and that your receiver is capable with that that certain resistance. You would probably be safe with running 2 pairs of speakers but I would definitely not do 3 pairs. I would look into a 4 zone amplifier for that. Hope this helps! |
Question: | I have a sonos amp and 8 ceiling speakers. Dont know the ohms of the speaker. Will this work |
Answer: | It should work, range of ohms for niles 2-16 ohms it will match your 4 sets of speakers fine. |
Question: | How does it connect from the receiver if your "outs" are only plugs |
Answer: | The plugs (1-zone Each) have (4-each) set-screws with holes for 2 Pos & 2 Neg each speaker wires from receiver, or Amp SPEAKER output |

User questions & answers
Question: | My amplifier is capable of one pair of 4 ohms load. Can I use this to connect 2 pairs of speakers, each pair are 4 ohms load |
Answer: | No |
Question: | watts per channel handling.—Does this mean the input can only be 100 watts or that her output can be 100 watts per channel from 400 watt source |
Answer: | It means that the maximum input can be 100 watts per channel. Now if you have a 400 watt amplifier, it can still work as long as you don't crank it up past 100 watts output. |
Question: | I have a receiver Denon E400 that has 175W per channel, worked well with these speaker selector |
Answer: | What matters is the impedance. Most Amps are 8 ohm as are speakers. When you hook multiple speakers in parallel the impedance goes down. The selector ensures that the impedance is at least 4 ohms even when as many as eight speakers are hooked in parallel (and would otherwise present 1 ohm of impedance). On my Yamaha receiver there is a switch that allows for a 4 ohm load and that is the key. You can probably run a 4 ohm load from an 8 ohm driver, it just means that more energy is dissipated in the amp than in the speakers but hopefully not so much as to do damage |
Question: | Can I control volumes on two different speakers independently with this device |
Answer: | No, there's no volumes controller on this device. You need a controller like ''Niles VCS100R White FG00956 100 Watt InWall Volume Control " (http://www.amazon.com/Niles-VCS100R-White-FG00956-Control/dp/B0001W1I58/ref=pd_sim_e_3) for each pair of speakers. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this switch be run "in reverse"? (four amplifiers to one pair of speakers by being careful to have only one circuit at a time "on |
Answer: | That sounds kind of sketchy I would not try it. Running this in reverse is not worth the damage it may cause. |
Question: | How does this nile compare to osd for the same item |
Answer: | What do you mean by osd? |
Question: | Can I stack my Yamaha 6750 amp/receiver on top of this speaker selector |
Answer: | Yes, but it will get a little warm. I originally put the speaker selector on top of the receiver and that was worse - the receiver would shut down after about 5 minutes.I now have the speaker selector on a separate shelf with my DVD player on top of it. |
Question: | The description says black, but the pic is grey. so what is it |
Answer: | This picture is badly shot. The unit is Black. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work for a onkyo Home entertainment system |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | There seems no definitive answers here. Can you connect the speaker and amp wires via Banana Plugs |
Answer: | Don’t use banana plugs. Just twist your 12 ga wire more or just cut a couple strands off until it goes in. |
Question: | Will "banana plugs" work with the connections |
Answer: | 12 gauge and its tight |
Question: | Can the volume to speaker part two be louder than the volume to speaker pair one |
Answer: | Either amp can access the speakers, however, you must choose which speaker you desire as both speakers cannot be on at the same time. Only one or the other. The same rule applies to the amps as well. |
Product description
The SP-96-V speaker selector with volume control will allow you to use two stereos with up to 12 speakers (6 pairs) placed around the house, restaurant, office, warehouse etc. You can turn each set of speakers on and off, and adjust the volume for each pair as well. The input for the SP-96-V comes from your stereos, amps, receivers, etc. This just means you take the speaker wires from the back of your stereo, amp, etc. and plug them into the either input terminals on the back of the SP-96-V. Each speaker pair has independent rotary volume control. Volume adjustment and impedance matching is accomplished through internal heavy-duty multi-trapped transformers for each speaker. This allows complete, independent control of each pair with maximum efficiency and virtually no generation of heat. The built-in precision auto impedance correction and overload protection circuits will safe-guard your amplifiers and speakers from damage due to excessively low impedance when all 12 speakers are playing at the same time. Machined brass gold plated color coded professional grade banana socket connections accept up to 10AWG wires. Dimensions: 2.50"H x 10.0"L x 16.0"W. Sturdy metal enclosure. Passive design, no power required.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you connect a subwoofer to this |
Answer: | The unit is just a splitter, not a switcheroo. There is a switch for each pair of speakers, so you can turn a pair off or on, but you cannot exchange them. The banana jacks allow you to easily exchange pairs, but you would have to do it manually. |
