Also, for what it's worth, in my opinion, at a reasonable room-filling volume I thought the sound quality was similar.

Answer: If you can swing 2 Play:3s, that would be what to get. The sound is much better. Play:1 sounds great for what it is. But size and quantity matters. And whoever says that 2 Play:3s cannot be paired in stereo is completely wrong. And it depends on what kind of party this is. Is this for quiet ambience? Or is this a fun thumping party? That should help with which speakers to get. Even the Play:3 is kind of dicey for a loud thumping party.
