User questions & answers
Question: | im trying to make my own test leads for different applications, will these work/fit with a voltmeter |
Answer: | Depends. It should fit as the multimeters use standard banana plug socket innerds, but for years commercial test leads have no longer used bare plugs because of the hazards associated with accidental contact which would be shockingly dangerous if working with high voltage (yes, these meters are routinely used in high voltage electrical applications - my meter carries a CAT III rating for use with 1000V, CAT IV for 600 V). BUT, I mainly use my meter on ham radio stuff and sometimes on cars - all low voltage DC applications.I just ordered these to make a current (amperage) test rig with Anderson Power Pole sockets. Again, I stress that I am working with voltage running significantly less than 30V (sometimes 24 V systems in aviation or other automotive systems), but I will wrap the plug bodies in heat shrink insulation to minimize likelihood of contact. |
Question: | I've read that these plugs can accept 12-18 AWG wire; however, I'd like to know what you all have used/what is working best |
Answer: | I use 12 gauge on my fronts and 14 on my surrounds with no issues. The 12 gauge was a little difficult to get wrapped back around and then screw down, but I really don't know of any banana plug that would we easier, without going to the kind where they use a screw to fasten. This is the easier, cleaner look in my opinion! |
Question: | The description says: "Can accept bare wire and spades. " How do you connect spades |
Answer: | As PCKIDZ replied, this is a two function connector. The banana plugs are pushed into the hole in the end.If you unscrew the barrel which is knurled, the smaller shaft is exposed, where you can slip on your spade lug and then tighten the knurled shaft to secure the lug. |
Question: | whats the differance between open screw and closed screw banna plugs |
Answer: | "Open Screw" type plug (side wire) allows for daisy chaining or stacking additional banana plugs to the back. This is desirable in DJ applications if you're running a speakers in parallel and if your amp can handle the low impedances. Closed Screw type has the wire at the back. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I don't know much about cables to speakers, but do these work well with the sony ss-cs5 speakers |
Answer: | The 2709B has a 66 Megohm resistance measuring capacity in its top end ohmmeter function. Other types of megohmmeters, sometimes known as "Meggers" include the ability to put high levels of DC stress voltages (500V, 1000V, etc) on the load (such as large transformers, inductors, Power Factor Capacitors, etc.) while also indicating resistance in Megohms. Clearly, the 2709B, while being able to measure simple resistances, cannot substitute for these. The 2709B only has a 9V battery inside, and is not intended to generate the high DC stress voltages that a "Megger" can. That said, it is still a wonderful instrument for its intended purpose. "Meggers" are a highly industrial instrument usually used in High Power Distribution systems, a different world entirely than that of Low Voltage Electronics Troubleshooting. |
Question: | Will this become prime shipping anytime soon |
Answer: | Yes. For the lower current fuse, which is the one you most likely may need to replace, search for a: F 500 mA 500V ceramic 6.3 x 32 mm (6 x 32 mm) fuse. The 'F' stands for fast blowing ('flink') and the 'ceramic' indicates it has a ceramic body that will not grenade under extreme overload. In a pinch you can use an 'FF' ceramic fuse, where FF stands for very fast blowing ('flink flink'). Over time, however, an FF fuse may blow at high currents when it does not need to. I have tripled checked the fuse data against what is printed on the meter and against the spare fuses packed with two different meters, made roughly a year apart. |
Question: | Are the banana plugs able to be remove from one side if necessary |
Answer: | It should be. The "Auto Power Off" section on page 9 of my manual explains how. Basically, you press and hold any button but HOLD, and then turn on the meter. |
Question: | How many cables in total |
Answer: | It depends on what you are measuring. Capacitance can be less frequent. Otherwise, the meter sends a measurement anywhere from roughly once per second (for frequency) to three times per second (for continuity) – to the USB port. The meter can stop transmitting if it is frantically auto-ranging; otherwise, if the meter shows a value, it will send it. In case you are curious, I project a fresh alkaline battery should be good for 300–350 hours of measurements. I discovered a tolerable few things about the 390A, while writing a Python utility to log its values under OSX, Windows and Linux. It is a nice meter. |

Blue Jeans Cable Canare 4S11 Speaker Cable, with Welded Banana Plugs, Conventional (not Bi-wire) terminations, 10 foot
At Blue Jeans Cable, we were never happy with the conventional methods of attaching speaker cable to banana plugs. Setscrews are fine, but lack pull strength; compression connections are never as strong as they look like they're going to be; and solder, on large high-mass connectors, is slow going and tends to cause a lot of insulation meltback. Our solution: ultrasonic welding. Our Sonobond Ultrasonic Welder (made in West Chester, PA) welds the copper wire to the brass banana plug body without the excessive heat associated with conventional welding, fusing copper to brass in a tight, strong, low-resistance, reliable connection.
Conventional Configuration
This cable is made with two bananas at each end for conventional speaker hookups. If you need this cable in bi-wired configuration, we offer that, too -- search our listings here on Amazon.
Quality Parts for Quality Connection
This cable is made using Canare's popular 4S11 star-quad speaker cable stock, which contains four 14 AWG wires for an effective gauge, when conventionally wired, of 11 AWG, in a Black PVC Jacket. To this cable we weld our custom-made weldable banana plugs, designed specifically to maximize weld surface area for high weld strength. These are "locking" banana plugs -- the plug end consists of four splines, and advancing the locking collar around the connector spreads these splines, allowing you to tighten the connection once the banana is in the binding post and avoid plugs being accidentally tugged out.
Blue Jeans Cable -- Professional Cable Assembly in the USA
We assemble these cables at our shop in Seattle, Washington, where we also make a wide variety of quality video, audio and data cables for the home theater and professional markets. Browse our product listings here to see more.
- Canare 4S11 cable stock -- 4 14 AWG wires in a star-quad configuration, effective 11 AWG.
- WELDED connections -- yes, welded, not soldered -- for maximum pull strength and minimum contact resistance
- Terminated in our Seattle shop on our Sonobond Ultrasonic Welder
- Locking-type banana plugs; loosen the collar to insert or remove, advance it to secure it in the binding post
- NOTE: this is a single cable, to wire one speaker. If you need a pair, be sure to order two.

Get the most out of your home audio system by ensuring the best connection from your speaker cable to your receiver with the Sewell deadbolt banana plugs. Using self crimping teeth These plugs provide a simple, secure, and low profile connection without requiring soldering or screws. These 1.6” inch plugs are extremely low profile making it so you can put your speakers or receiver closer to the wall. Unlike other banana plugs that use low quality metals like zinc alloy The Sewell deadbolt banana plugs use pure copper and high Quality brass with 24K Gold plating. Installation one of the best things about the deadbolt banana plugs is that installation is quick, secure, and requires no tools. Just follow these steps. Feed the cable through the bottom piece. Push the cable back over the teeth on the bottom piece. Screw the top piece to the bottom one. You're finished. All in all you should only need 10-20 seconds for this entire operation. What are banana plugs? Today, many electronics use the banana plug interface, also known as binding post (referring to This connection in its female form). this female binding post connection that accepts this banana plug is found commonly on virtually all audio/video receivers, speaker wall plates, and more. Banana plugs offer an alternative to inserting a bare speaker wire into the equipment. Often a bare speaker connection is not as reliable as a guaranteed banana plug connection. Wires tend to get pulled out or frizzy after time passes. Banana plugs require only one install, giving you a permanent and robust connector at the end of your speaker wire.
- 24k Gold Plating on Connector and Crimping Teeth
- Fast Lock technology makes it easy for self crimping a reliable connection.
- Heavy Duty Brass Casing for maximum durability
- Wider base minimizes shorting for maximum signal transfer.
- Maximum Wire Size 8 AWG (10 AWG suggested)
User questions & answers
Question: | Are these 4mm or 2mm diameter pins. I need 2mm but none of the good banana plugs are labeled |
Answer: | 4mm. All banana plugs come in one standard size. |
Question: | Can i use these on a 12v system as power feeds? if so how many amps? looking for at least 15a on 12v |
Answer: | That should work fine on a 12v power supply, we use those plugs for a similar purpose on the variable power supply that we have here in the lab. |
Question: | Can I use with 18 gauge speaker wire |
Answer: | Yes 18 gauge stranded wire will work fine. |
Question: | I have the old style speakers that have the connection that you press to push the speaker wire into. Will this work with the new style plugs |
Answer: | If you are asking if the banana plug will fit into the connectors you push the speaker wire into then the answer is probably no. For that type of connector I would consider coating the ends of the speaker wire with a thin layer of solder once the ends are in good shape so they will be easier to connect and disconnect. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used inside walls |
Answer: | I also have monster cables connecting my front speakers to my stereo receiver. I used this cable to connect a center channel to my receiver. I agree that you most likely won't hear a difference. That being said, this is a high quality cable for a great price and the banana plugs are an added convenience. |
Question: | Is there any difference between 14 n 18 gauge speaker wire |
Answer: | I didn't notice any nasty smell from the cables I received !!!!!! |
Question: | How do you pull the wires apart |
Answer: | Each cable has two wires encased in one sleeve with two connectors on each end, one for + (red) and one for - (black). The connector terminals on any recently manufactured speakers should be coded red and black as well. If the speaker terminal is circular with a hole in the middle, make sure the terminal is fully closed by turning clockwise and insert the Mediabridge plug into the terminal hole. You need one Mediabridge cable for each speaker. |
Question: | Does the banana plug go into the same springeslot that bare wire did |
Answer: | Yes, I removed the banana clips from one end to be able to connect the bare speaker wires to my older Bose speakers. I did use a wire tool to remove the covering. It worked very well and I’m pleased with the results. |

Question: | Does anyone know the specific mm diameter of the wire? i am hoping to sleeve them and would love to know before i order |
Answer: | No, you would need two ADCs working at the same time in parallel to perform this task. But you could use serial comm to send commands and read voltage and current at a reasonable rate. |
Question: | Can this wires be cut |
Answer: | The unit ships with (test leads, power cord, spare fuse, operation manual, calibration certificate and test report); USB cable not included https://www.bkprecision.com/products/multimeters/2831E-4-1-2-digit-true-rms-bench-digital-multimeter.html please enter hyperlink into your browser to product page + datasheet. Question: | Can I use these wires to hook up my kicker 500watt amp and my single 10inch kicker 600watts subwoofer |
Answer: | BK2831 has USB control interface and SCPI(Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments) compatible.=> http://www.bkprecision.com/products/multimeters/2831E-4-1-2-digit-true-rms-bench-digital-multimeter.htmlI think you may include this model to your labview project.=> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOvXHwkpfV8 |
Question: | If soldering is used in making the banana plug connections, what grade solder... is it audiophile grade solder?? Thanks |
Answer: | The meter can connect to the PC via USB. SCPI is used to program and query the meter. You can measure voltage, but I'm not sure about time. You can measure frequency and period if that is what you need. |
Question: | Is the brand "Monoprice" printed on anything that is visible? Like the connector or the jacket |
Answer: | The voltage used to perform resistance tests on the OHM position on the selector dial is approximately .39V, which is below the .5V to .6V level that will turn on a typical semiconductor junction. This is good for in-circuit testing, as it will not forward bias standard semiconductor junctions, which would skew some in-circuit ohm tests low. The voltage used on the DIODE position is much higher, approximately 3.5V, which is more than enough to turn on a semiconductor junction, which is the purpose of the DIODE position. The DIODE position is best used on components out of circuit. |
Question: | This listing is slightly ambiguous, is this a two speaker pair or just positive and negative pair |
Answer: | Its a good meter, it works, but as of durability not as good as a fluke i used to own. The one thingthat broke on my 2709b was the stand on the back.. Only after a few weeks of use, really bad design. |
Question: | Are the red and black wires separate the full length, or are they enclosed in another braid |
Answer: | +1 on the quick responsiveness. Also, for more in-depth information on this meter and others like it, Dave Jones does a great job comparing all the features: /https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-_dUB8vy8U. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you remove the banana clips from one end |
Answer: | Yes, I removed the banana clips from one end to be able to connect the bare speaker wires to my older Bose speakers. I did use a wire tool to remove the covering. It worked very well and I’m pleased with the results. |
Question: | Is it common for the tips and shaft/base to come loose? This kept happening before and during installation. It’s like the plugs don’t tighten up |
Answer: | Yes, these do come loose all the time from the time they arrive. But they're good wires durable and flexibility. You can always swap the plugs out or glue them like suggested. I would have to say, out of the few cables I do have they're my favorite, and at a reasonable price. |
Question: | Is this for a pair of speakers or just one speaker |
Answer: | Just one speaker. Black and Red wires. |
Question: | what gauge is the wire |
Answer: | 16 gauge |
