13 best guage speakers
Gauge speakers refer to the measurement of the thickness or diameter of the wire used in speaker cables, particularly in the context of audio and home theater systems. This measurement, often referred to as "wire gauge" or simply "gauge," plays a crucial role in determining the electrical conductivity and overall performance of the speaker cable. Here's what you should know about gauge speakers and their relevance to audio systems:
Wire Gauge: Wire gauge is a numerical measurement that represents the thickness or diameter of the wire. It is typically expressed in American Wire Gauge (AWG) or metric measurements like millimeters squared (mm²). In the context of speaker cables, the lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire.
Conductivity: The gauge of the speaker wire directly affects its electrical conductivity. Thicker wire (lower gauge) has lower resistance, which means it can transmit electrical signals more efficiently with less loss of quality. Thinner wire (higher gauge) has higher resistance and may lead to signal loss, especially over long cable runs.
Speaker Cable Selection: When choosing speaker cables, it's important to consider the length of the cable run and the power requirements of your audio system. For shorter distances and lower-power systems, a higher gauge (thinner) cable may suffice. For longer distances and higher-power systems, a lower gauge (thicker) cable is often recommended to minimize signal loss.
Audio Quality: The gauge of the speaker cable can impact the audio quality in high-fidelity audio systems. Thicker cables are generally preferred for audiophile setups as they can maintain signal integrity and deliver clearer, more accurate sound.
Terminations: Speaker cables with different gauges can come with various termination options, such as banana plugs, spade connectors, or bare wire ends. The choice of termination depends on the compatibility with your speakers and audio equipment.
Cost: Thicker-gauge speaker cables tend to be more expensive than thinner-gauge cables because they use more copper, which is a costlier material. However, investing in high-quality cables can make a noticeable difference in sound quality.
DIY vs. Pre-Made Cables: Some audio enthusiasts prefer to make their own speaker cables using bulk wire and connectors, allowing for customization of gauge, length, and termination.Others opt for pre-made cables for convenience and consistency.
Installation: When installing speaker cables, it's essential to ensure proper polarity and connection to maintain the correct phase of the audio signal. Typically, speaker cables are color-coded (red for positive, black for negative) or marked for easy identification.
In summary, the gauge of speaker cables is a critical factor to consider when setting up audio systems, as it can significantly impact signal quality and overall audio performance. Choosing the right gauge for your specific needs and equipment is essential to achieve the best sound reproduction in your home theater or audio setup.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can is be used outside? Direct 14/4 direct-burial speaker wire |
Answer: | The wire that I purchased was 14/2 and was not rated for direct-burial or in-wall use. You should look for wire specified for that application. This would not be suitable for that, though I would be comfortable hanging/stringing it along under eaves or a patio roof, so long as it was reasonably sheltered. |
Question: | i realize this states for in wall but does not specify if UL approved, is it actually UL approved so it will pass building code for in wall use |
Answer: | Attached is an excerpt from UL.com guide card for AVLV2 category code. It describes how certified wire should be marked. You can check for UL certification at UL.com on-line certification directory if you know manufacturer name or file number. The seller may be able to get you this information for proof of certification. REQUIREMENTS The basic standard used to investigate products in this category is ANSI/UL 758, "Appliance Wiring Material." In addition, IEC TS 60695-11-21, "Fire Hazard Testing - Part 11-21: Test Flames - 500 W Vertical Flame Test Method for Tubular Polymeric Materials," may also be used. UL MARKING Components Recognized under UL's Component Recognition Program are identified by markings consisting of the Recognition Mark of UL (shown below) on the attached tag, the reel, or the smallest unit container in which the product is packaged. In addition to the above tag, reel or container marking, the Recognized Component Mark may optionally be surface printed on the appliance wiring material. When used, the product name "Appliance Wiring Material" (or "AWM") will also be surface printed adjacent to the Recognized Component Mark , followed by the Recognized company's identification and/or file number. If the Recognized company's file number is an element of the surface printing, the Recognized Component Mark is required to also be surface printed. The Listing or Classification Mark of UL is not authorized for use on, or in connection with, Recognized Components. Only those components that actually bear the "Marking" should be considered as being covered under the Component Recognition Program. UR APPLIANCE WIRING MATERIAL or UR AWM |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work for carrying dc or ac power? if so is there a amp rating |
Answer: | Audio signals are AC, therefore it can be used on AC current. However, why would you use it to wire your mains? Much cheaper wire is available for that. Look up your local electrical codes for safe current ratings for a given gauge wire. Or did you mean something else by "power"? |
Question: | Is this Copper-clad aluminium wire or pure copper |
Answer: | This is oxygen free 100% copper. Very good wire. |
Question: | What size speaker wire do i need for a 4000watt amp |
Answer: | High Current needs least possible resistance to thrive...Research experts...It appears that low gauge (8-10) well connected OFC speaker wire makes a major difference. An Audio Engineer on a site re the relevance of amplifier damping factor spec. , demonstrated how thin CCA speaker wire used out of a high current power amp with a 500 damping factor could lower the net benefit of that low freq. driver control to a d. factor equiv. of |

User questions & answers
Question: | Using this outside for speakers, will this stand up to the elements? Does the wire need to be completely enclosed with banana or pin clips |
Answer: | The wire will hold up to the elements. You should make provisions to make your speaker connection moisture free. Maybe silicone the ends and i would definitely not use bana plugs as that would only make for another way for moisture and corrosion to play into the job |
Question: | Can u use this to wire up a LED light bar on a side x side |
Answer: | As long as your led fixtures aren't running power along with dmx. The wire gauge is ok. |
Question: | What is the outside diameter of the individual sleeve of each wire? I need to know if this diameter is less than 2.4 mm. Thank you |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the strand with the solid red line positive or negative |
Answer: | I don't think it matters if you use the red for positive or negative, as long as you use the wire the same way on both stereo speakers. On the back of a lot of stereo amps/receivers and speakers, one terminal is colored red, and the other is black. For simplicity's sake, I would just put the red wire into the red terminals, and the plain wire into the black terminals. Stereo speakers make sound by moving in and out, pushing air. To make sure both speakers are moving in and out at the same time, be sure to wire both of them the same way, red/black. If you wire them differently, one speaker will be moving in at the same time the other is moving out, which can affect your listening enjoyment. Also, please note that this 12 gauge wire is really too thick for most stereo applications. I had to trim the ends way down to get it to fit into my 1973 receiver and speaker terminals. Unless you are running some really high-end audio equipment, or need to run the wire long distances, the thinner 18 gauge wire should work just fine, and probably cost less per foot. |
Question: | Can this be used permanently outdoors year round. I live in the deep south so no extreme weather conditions just rain |
Answer: | I don't think this wire is sufficiently covered to be exposed to rain on a regular basis. I would look for something that has thick rubber or plastic wrapping, something specifically made for outdoors. Also, I found that this 12 gauge wire is too thick for the terminals on my 1970s stereo receiver and speakers. I had to trim the ends way down to get the wire to fit. Unless you are running some very high-powered sound applications, I think the thinner 18 gauge wire would be much more useful. |
Question: | can this wire handle 125VAC and above, if not where can I find wire that can |
Answer: | This wire can handle up to 125vac, but would definitely not push it past that. I would suggest using 10 or 8 gauge wire for anything over. Any box store hardware would have the higher gauge. |
Question: | Is it 50' of both or 25'? Of both |
Answer: | dual wire 50' length. It is like 12/2 |

Question: | this wire looks a bit thin for 10 awg, is this really 12 awg? or even |
Answer: | Yes i would agree it is a slight bit smaller than some of your american wire.. |
Question: | Can i use this to power my cb radio - from car battery? do they make o rings to fit battery posts? thanks |
Answer: | Yes to power CB radio, however this might be over kill for your need. Please review the Wattage that your CB Radio draws at maxim power (See the manual that came with your radio), if it is under 5Watts / 12 voltage = .41 total AMPS of current-you are under 1 amp of power draw. With that light of a power load you do not need 10 Gage wire. But note: Length of wire and the amount of Amperage will determine a recommended wire Gage -Check out this chart: http://www.hondashadow.net/forum/72-technical-discussion/282297-help-speaker-amp-install.html There is an easy to use chart about 1/2 way down this forum. If you under 5 amps and I am guessing your are.... 18AWG = 15feet, 16AWG = 24.5 feet, 14AWG wire = 39 feet... just cross reference the chart. As for Battery Terminal Posts, Yes they make all sorts of Battery terminal extensions to attache wires. |
Question: | Is this aluminum wire |
Answer: | Its CCA - Copper Clad Aluminum. |
Question: | Is this wire CL2 or CL3 rated |
Answer: | There is no obvious NEC/UL rating printed on the wire or spool - no documentation included. The said, this 'zipper wire' crimps without breaking and insulation does not retreat when copper is soldered. - give a call to AUDIOPIPE if your app requires wire meeting a specific standard. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone actually caliper'd this wire to confirm true 10 AWG |
Answer: | yes it is |
Question: | Can this wire be used as electrical lamp cord, if not, why |
Answer: | In reality, probably. In actuality, no, it's dangerous as heck. This is intended as low voltage, DC current wire. Get wire meant for regular electric supply, also make sure the gauge of the wire is sized correctly for load and length. If this lamp burns your house down with this wire, homeowners insurance won't cover the loss. -Not an Electrician, but I know some stuff |
Question: | If i run the wire through a conduit, is there any reason i wouldn't want to use this outdoors? running 100' to bose 151ses |
Answer: | If you going to run this outside you should run double copper |
Question: | Can i used this for a 200 foot run to a foyer speaker |
Answer: | It would depend on your watts. I am running it about 150 feet, with 250 watts at the amp. Worked far better than 14 gauge. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi guys, 100feet reel weight is approx 5lbs maybe? let me know |
Answer: | 2 to 5 maybe, pretty light when I went to pick mine up. Great speaker wire with good sound too. DP |
Question: | Is this wire have positive and negative color code |
Answer: | Actually has a blue line for neg. and the other for pos. |
Question: | What size wire should i use 16 or |
Answer: | Depends on both the length of the run and the impedance of the speaker. For 8 ohm speakers, 16AWG is good to 48' and 14 AWG to 80'. For 6 ohm speakers, 16 AWG is good to 36' and 14 AWG to 60'. |
Question: | Sorry, dumb question from a newbie. I received this today. How do i know what end goes into red and which into black? Or does it not matter |
Answer: | Not a dumb question, either wire is okay into either color. Just be sure both ends of each wire are color specific. In other words, black to black and red to red. Also splice plastic cleanly and be sure the little wires that make up the whole wire get locked in cleanly to connector. Any stray wires not locked may impede the sound quality. Have fun, the wire you bought works great |

User questions & answers
Question: | The shipping weight for 100 ft of 14 AWG pure copper wire is listed as 1 pound. Can that be right? Seems awfully light to me |
Answer: | I agree and don't remember the weight - I still have 30 feet of it. The spool it came on weighs about 4.5 ounces and with the 30 feet wire, it is about 1 pound 3 ounces. It really is nice wire - wish I had 10 more feet as I need 40' to run to one of my speakers. I need to check if it comes in 50' quantity. |
Question: | The two strands in the picture look the same. How do you distinguish +/- in long runs |
Answer: | Both strands of wire are identical. The only difference is one is marked with a blue stripe to help you identify that specific strand. When connecting the wires, ensure you connect each strand to the same corresponding terminal on each end of your connection. For example, blue stripe to negative, no-stripe to positive. Connect in the same manner on both ends and you shouldn't have any problems. For cleaner connections, add banana plugs or pin plugs to the ends (banana plugs for binding post terminals, pin plugs for spring clip terminals.) |
Question: | Is this speaker wire thick? Which one is thicker, 12 awg or 14 awg? im confused. thanks |
Answer: | 12 awg is thicker than 14 awg. The lower the number, the thicker the wire. I think this is very nice speaker wire. It is thick but I just have it laid on the floor. |
Question: | What's "enhanced" about it |
Answer: | This speaker wire features two conductors made of high purity (greater than 99.95% pure), oxygen-free bare copper. Pure Bare Copper is a superior conductor to the copper clad aluminum (CCA) conductors used in most other inexpensive speaker wire. CCA is only about 68% as conductive as pure bare copper. This additional resistance is added to the impedance of your speakers and can negatively effect the sound. |

- 12 gauge, 2 conductor speaker cable (also known as speaker wire, audio wire, audio cable, stereo wire, stereo cable)
- Full thickness, 12 gauge/awg conductors; no skimping or reduced thickness
- High performance, 65 strand, oxygen-free copper conductors
- 100% copper conductors; no inferior CCA
- White outer jacket
- Red and Black colored conductor insulation
- 500 foot bulk payout box
Time Saving Features
Speaker wire isn't the most exciting product in the world, but we still found a way to pack ours full of features that will save you time and and eliminate frustration:
- Proprietary winding technology and massive payout hole combine to eliminate kinks and tangles as wire is pulled out of the box.
- Reinforced handles, super-strong cardboard, and a water resistant coating ensure that the box can withstand a lot of abuse.
- Foot markers ensure that you always know how much wire is left in the box.
- Room labels allow you to keep track of which room (and wall) each wire goes to.
- Rip cord and low-friction tissue make it easy to remove the outer jacket when terminating.
Ratings
Our speaker wire gets installed in your home. That's why we take fire-safety ratings seriously and why all of our wire is tested by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the industry leading testing laboratory:
- In-wall (CL2/CL3) rated
- In-ground (Direct Burial) rated
- Approved jacketing material meets all applicable fire safety standards
- 12 AWG, 2 CONDUCTORS, WHITE JACKET, 500FT BOX. Premium 12 gauge speaker cable, featuring 65 strand OFC conductors and a super-luxe outer jacket. Built to exacting standards with zero compromises.
- OXYGEN-FREE COPPER (OFC). Oxygen-free copper conductors result in less signal loss and are more durable than conductors made of CCA.
- CL3 + DIRECT BURIAL. Fire safety rated for in-wall use in Class 2 (CL2) & Class 3 (CL3) circuits in residential low-voltage applications. Direct burial rated for in-ground installation without conduit. All testing performed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
- SUPERIOR BOX. Patented winding technology & massive payout hole eliminate kinks and tangles. Reinforced handles, super-durable cardboard, & water resistant coating keep the box in one piece.
- TIME SAVING FEATURES. Quick-strip sleeve & ripcord reduce time spent terminating wire. Printed foot markers & room labels help with project management.
User questions & answers
Question: | Does the black have the labeling on it, like the white does |
Answer: | It sure does! On our black speaker cable the printing is in white ink. |
Question: | Is this rated and listed on the wire insulation 60° C or more |
Answer: | This is not rated for high temperature applications. It’s intended for use primarily in wall or in ground. |
Question: | Where can i Just buy 50' of this |
Answer: | Unfortunately, we do not make this in a 50' put up, but we do make it in a 100' put up: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B089CTMFMY. It's under our Voltive brand, but it's the same exact wire (we're slowly transitioning our brand from Next to Voltive). |
Question: | Voltage rating |
Answer: | This wire is rated to 300 volts. |
