14 best belay shoes
Belay shoes, in the context of climbing and outdoor activities, refer to a specific type of climbing shoe designed for belaying. Belaying is a crucial aspect of rock climbing, where one climber manages the safety rope for another climber.Belay shoes are not as common as climbing shoes for the climber on the wall, but they serve an important purpose for the person on the ground providing belay support. Here's what you need to know about belay shoes:
Purpose: Belay shoes are primarily designed for the belayer, not the climber on the wall. They are meant to provide comfort and support while standing for extended periods as the belayer manages the rope and ensures the climber's safety.
Comfort: Belay shoes prioritize comfort with features like cushioning and arch support. They are often more akin to casual or approach shoes than the tight-fitting and aggressive climbing shoes worn by climbers.
Stiff Sole: Belay shoes typically have a relatively stiff sole compared to climbing shoes. This stiffness helps reduce fatigue and provides a stable platform for standing on rocky or uneven terrain.
Traction: Good traction is essential for belay shoes as the belayer might be standing on rocky or slippery surfaces. They often have sticky rubber outsoles to ensure a secure grip.
Durability: Belay shoes are designed to withstand wear and tear, as they may come into contact with rough surfaces while the belayer moves around and manages the rope.
Versatility: Some belay shoes are versatile enough for other outdoor activities, such as hiking or approach to climbing areas, making them suitable for climbers who want multipurpose footwear.
Women's Options: Many brands offer belay shoes specifically designed for women, considering differences in foot shape and size.
Brands: Various outdoor and climbing gear brands manufacture belay shoes, so climbers have a range of options to choose from based on their preferences and needs.
Belay shoes are an important part of a climber's gear, especially for those who frequently engage in belaying duties. They provide comfort and stability during the belaying process, ensuring the safety of the climber on the wall. While belay shoes are not as specialized as climbing shoes, they serve a vital role in the climbing experience.

User questions & answers
Question: | If my size 7 (24,5 sm),which size I have to choose |
Answer: | I wear a US Men's 10.5 street shoe, and the Tenaya Tanta 10.5 was unbearably tight. They seem to be quite small for the sizes. I ended up with a US 11.5 (one full size larger than my street shoes) and they were still tight, but bearable. Note: they don't have a liner, so your foot is right up on the leather if you don't wear socks. |

User questions & answers
Question: | hi, can you tell me wich size is 22,5cm |
Answer: | If you go to La sportiva's website you can review their size charts. |
Question: | I am a woman's size 9.5. What size should I get |
Answer: | I would use the La Sportiva sizing chart. It worked well for me. For a women's 9.5 they recommend either a 41 or 41.5 , the 41.5 which is also called a 9.5+ is closer to a size 10 but not quite a 10 . I like might shoes a bit tighter so I went with a 41. Hope this helps and happy climbing :o) |
Question: | what size do I order for 7.5 shoe weaer |
Answer: | If you are just starting out, I recommend getting the same size as your street shoe size so you can walk around in them and it will feel more comfortable. I was recommended to get a size smaller or half size smaller from more experienced climbers because you want the shoes to be tight and your toes to curl up a bit at the end. They will also eventually stretch out to the form of your feet after breaking them in. Otherwise, I recommend you going to your nearest climbing gym or sports / outdoors store that sells climbing shoes and try them on. I have no doubt the staff would be great at giving advice in what shoe size to get for whatever shoe you plan to buy. Some gyms even let you climb in the shoes and let you test them out to see if you like them. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I usually wear 45 EU size, and i see here people say the sizing is too high and other say its too small. So which size should I buy |
Answer: | I normally wear a 44 EU (10 US) and I bought them that size. I wish I would have gotten a half size smaller (43 or 42 EU) because they do run a little big. |
Question: | Are these for pros |
Answer: | I wouldn't call them pro shoes, but they are great shoes in general. The rubber is not very hard and not very soft, and the shoe is not down-turned, so it's a great shoe for beginner or mid-level climbers to climb with a variety of styles. |
Question: | Why does the size chart differ from other sources |
Answer: | La Sportiva shoes generally use the euro sizing chart and tend to run big. I would suggest going down a full size from other climbing shoes on the market. I normally wear 8 to 8.5 in other climbing shoes but La Sportiva I wear 7 to 7.5. You can always buy several pairs and return the ones that don't fit. I hope this info helps you with making a buying decision. |
Question: | I wear size 8 u.s. should i get the same size in rock climbing shoes? or one size bigger? or half size smaller |
Answer: | Hi There, Climbing shoes are designed to fit tight, almost like a second skin. If you are new to climbing, a comfortable fit is most important. I would recommend going a half size down from your street shoe. In all honesty, I would order a couple of different sizes and return the ones that do not fit. You are looking for a very snug fit that does not hurt your foot. Please be aware that these shoes will stretch around a half of a size over time, so remember to size accordingly. I hope this helps! |

Product description
The starting point in our climbing career is of fundamental importance. It gives rise to the genetic building blocks that shape our climbing lives. The origin offers a lush leather upper, giving a feeling of a padded luxury that is rarely found in a shoe aimed at encouraging people to start climbing. The flat profile and relatively relaxed randing ease the climber's feet into a cocoon of comfort. The hook-and-loop closure keeps the foot snug and well positioned during use. The origin introduces scarpa's vision rubber, a proprietary compound that is both sticky and resilient to all the conditions that new climbers feet will experience.
Innovation and tradition share equally deep roots at SCARPA, a muti-generational, family-owned business whose headquarters and manufacturing facilities are in the same region of northern Italy where it was founded in 1938. SCARPA builds performance footwear for climbing, hiking, skiing, mountaineering, trail-running and other outdoor pursuits. Aside from being the Italian word for "shoe," SCARPA is an acronym for Societa Calzaturiera Asolana Riunita Pedemontana Anonima (Associated Shoe Manufacturing Company of the Asolo Mountain Area).

User questions & answers
Question: | how do these stretch out over time |
Answer: | Not well unless you wear them in the shower to stretch them but you do risk busting the stitching |
Question: | How thick is this shoe’s rubber in millimeters |
Answer: | The rubber is 5 mm thick. |
Question: | Hi. i'm a beginner at rock climbing. i'm size 37 and i bought 37 for this pair of shoes. but, my toes hurt like hell. should i order half size up |
Answer: | I'm a beginner also, so you may want to take this with a grain of salt. I'd go up a size leaning towards comfort. If mine hurt that much they may hold me back by not wanting to put them on. Mine started very tight and after a dozen sessions are stretched and are super comfortable now. Have a good one :) |
Question: | wear a size 11 what size should I get ? do they run small of big |
Answer: | Hard to say. If you wear a size 11 regular shoe. Prob go a half to a full size smaller on a climbing shoe. |

User questions & answers
Question: | This listing says it's for the Tarifa, a lace-up shoe, but I see pictures for both the Tarifa AND the Oasi. Which do I get if I pick the Oasi pic |
Answer: | If you haven't climbed on the Oasi before expect very soft rubber. It's great for being able to feel with your feet but can take some getting used to as the shoe doesn't protect your toes like other, harder rubber shoes. Happy climbing to you as well! |
Question: | What is the fitting like? Would you go a half size up |
Answer: | It just depends on the fit you are trying to achieve. These shoes are a more aggressive shoe, with velcro(meant to be taken off fast). So an aggressive fit, either a half size below to a full size might be the best fit. Just remember, you don't want to be in tears climbing, but an aggressive fit will help with short powerful climbing. |
Question: | Are these the Oasi or the Tarifa being sold here? Thanks |
Answer: | Oasi |
Question: | are these sizes US or UK |
Answer: | Uk |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these stiffer or softer shoes |
Answer: | These are softer shoes, though they don't quite stretch as much as others. The laces make them conform to the foot better than velcro ones. |
Question: | Hi, just getting into climbing and about to purchase my first pair of shoes. i'm usually between a 7.5-8 (us) mens and wondered what size i should get |
Answer: | Size down a full size these stretch and have more room than most climbing shoes. |
Question: | I don't understand the sizing. I would like to get a size 6 so which size do I click on |
Answer: | A 6 would be a 38. In street shoes, I wear a 10.5, but in these, I bought a 9.5 which is a 43. Just so you know, I bought 3 pairs, one above and one below the size I thought I needed, and sent back the 2 that didn't fit. I've found with rock climbing shoes, there is such a difference in sizing, the odds are low that you'll get the ones that fit on your first try. I wore them around the house for 20 min and kept going to the smaller size. They hurt at first, but eventually stretched. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Are the men and women’s shoes any different other than the color |
Answer: | I don't have direct knowledge of the lasts they use for men/women, I just know that as a guy I've worn equivalent women's (green) shoe sizes before and it didn't feel different enough to make a difference, whether there were actual differences in construction. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I wear a size 11 right foot and a 10.5 left. What size shoe should I order? The last set of shoes I had size 11 cramped my right big toe |
Answer: | I wear 10.5 - 11 in approach and street shoes and ended up with 43 vapors after a few tries. That said they still didn't fit my feet well enough, cramped outer toes when tight enough to edge well.. seems I'm more of five ten foot shape, so really you are going to have to try a few pairs and see if they work; only you can know if they fit how you want them to.. |
Question: | How do these size versus a mythos |
Answer: | i fit my stree shoes from every company at 43.5. (10.5 US) the vapor V fits me snug but not too tight. The mythos is a comfort shoe and sportiva usually has you size down two sizes for climbing shoes. so a 43.5 sportiva probably really means that you are a size 12 or 12.5 US. Knowing that a 43.5 will be too small for you. Hope this helps |
Question: | Are the ocean yellow/blue the current 2019 model? And qhat does 11-11.5 sizing mean |
Answer: | Usually the shoes are sized by cm. My 11 are 43cm. Tight fit as they are supposed to be. Great climbing shoes! |
Question: | are these 2015 version or |
Answer: | I think they were 2015. I had the previous orange version and loved them. I wasn't as pleased with these though. The heel cup was a little loose. I don't think there was a difference between 2015 an 16. |

Answer: | Hi There, D= Men's, and (M)= medium width. These shoes size differently than other brands of climbing shoes. I would recommend downsizing about 1.5 US sizes down from your street shoe. These shoes are purely synthetic, so you are looking for that perfect fit right out of the box. I hope this helps! |
