Answer:	There are basically two layers to the shoe sole. The first layer starts at the toe and is a little more than a quarter inch. The sole then widens one inch by the back of the heel. This is my second pair of this particular shoe; the first pair lasted about 2 years and is still basically good. I trade them on and off with the second pair that I got. I use them practically all summer long when I stand for long periods of time at work. They are comfortable, especially if you have wide feet. Hope this helps.
