11 best trail running shoes
Trail running shoes are specialized athletic footwear designed for running on rugged and uneven terrain, such as trails, dirt paths, rocky surfaces, and muddy tracks. These shoes are essential for trail runners, as they provide the necessary protection, support, and grip required for off-road running. Here are some key features and considerations related to trail running shoes:
Traction: Trail running shoes are equipped with outsoles that have aggressive tread patterns and durable rubber compounds. This provides enhanced grip on slippery or uneven surfaces, allowing runners to navigate various terrains confidently.
Stability and Support: To prevent ankle rolls and injuries on uneven terrain, trail running shoes often feature a more supportive and protective design compared to road running shoes. They may include reinforced heel cups and additional cushioning around the ankles.
Protection: Trail shoes typically have a protective toe cap to shield your toes from rocks and roots. They also offer additional protection against debris and sharp objects on the trail.
Durability: Given the rugged nature of trail running, these shoes are built to be more durable than standard road running shoes. They are designed to withstand the wear and tear associated with off-road running.
Water Resistance: Some trail running shoes come with water-resistant or waterproof uppers to keep your feet dry when running through wet or muddy conditions.
Breathability: While protection is crucial, breathability is also essential. Many trail shoes feature breathable materials to help regulate temperature and moisture, reducing the risk of blisters.
Fit: It's essential to find a trail running shoe that fits your foot shape well. A good fit ensures comfort and minimizes the risk of friction-related issues like blisters and hotspots.
Cushioning: The level of cushioning varies among trail running shoes. Some offer minimal cushioning for a more natural feel, while others provide ample cushioning for added comfort on longer runs.
Drop: The "drop" or "heel-to-toe drop" refers to the height difference between the heel and forefoot of the shoe. Trail running shoes may have varying drop levels to suit different running styles and preferences.
Weight: Trail running shoes come in a range of weights, from lightweight options for speed and agility to more substantial shoes with extra protection and support. Choose a weight that aligns with your running goals and preferences.
Brand and Model: There are numerous brands and models of trail running shoes available, each with its unique features and design. It's essential to research and try on different options to find the one that suits you best.
Gender-Specific Models: Some brands offer gender-specific trail running shoes designed to accommodate differences in foot anatomy and biomechanics between men and women.
When selecting trail running shoes, it's important to consider your specific needs and the type of trails you plan to run on.Trying on different shoes and seeking advice from experienced runners or specialty stores can help you find the perfect pair for your trail running adventures.

Question: | Assuming the X-wide is 4E, than the normal width is 2E |
Answer: | I usually wear 8.5 in most shoes. In Nikes and running shoes I wear 9 or 9.5. I tried these in 8.5, 9 and 9.5. I kept the 9.5. They are roomy and super comfortable. The others were too tight for me. |
Question: | Are the asics gel venture 7 shoes real asics or a knock off |
Answer: | Maybe they forgot the foamy and soft comfort and cushion in mine???? I usually wear nike and found these to be flatter, felt like I was wearing a weightlifting shoe. They are comfortable nonetheless |
Question: | Has anyone with bad planters fasciitis wore these? If so, how is it on the strain of your planters fascia |
Answer: | No, these are women’s sizes. The “M” is medium for width. |
Question: | Why do so many people in the reviews say these are "knock offs"? Makes me a bit worried about my order to be honest |
Answer: | Yes! The shoes are made of fabric and rubber; no animal derived components. |

About Topo Athletic
At Topo Athletic we have one mission, to make the best natural running shoes on the planet! Topo Athletic’s simple, gimmick-free design was created for people who want to run and move naturally. Whether you are running for fun or competing at an elite level, come join the millions of others who have discovered the performance and lifestyle benefits of natural movement.
Topo Athletic introduces shoes in 3 categories:
- Road
- Trail
- Recovery
Topo Athletic offers a unique fit and feel that encourages instinctive and natural movement to help maximize athletic performance, Topo was founded on three simple ingredients:
- Roomy Toe Box
- Low Drop
- Light Weight
Roomy Toe Box
Topo’s proprietary last shape fits snug through the waist and heel, yet is roomy in the toe box. This allows toes to spread and splay naturally for better muscle activation throughout the kinetic chain. As a result, athletes may experience improved balance, agility, and comfort
Low Drop
Topo’s current underfoot stack heights range from 16 to 30mm, with 0mm, 3mm, or 5mm of heel to toe offset (or “drop”). This low drop platform delivers a more stable and neutral foundation underfoot that encourages the foot and body to move naturally through the gait cycle
Light Weight
All Topo Athletic footwear is engineered to be lightweight, with most shoes weighing 5-10 ounces (150-290 grams) in sample sizes. People often remark on the surprisingly durability of Topos given their relative light weight
Topo vs Other Brands
Topo’s signature fit: roomy in the toes, but snug in the heel and waist, delivers a superior connection and sense of control when compared to the generally wide fit of other natural running shoe brands.
- TOPO: Snug in the waist + heel for a secure connected fit
- OTHERS: May lack security in waist +heel, feel sloppy
Sense Ride 3
Ideal for all your trail adventures, the SENSE RIDE 3 draws on road-running standards to provide overall comfort and soft cushioning. For extra grip and protection, the go-to shoe is also packed with trail-specific features like anti-debris mesh, a ground filter and grippy Contagrip outsole.
Contagrip Outsole
Contagrip MA is built for the widest variety of surfaces. It balances both the tread geometry and the compound to deliver confidence on wet, dry, hard or loose surfaces, and offer long-term durability. Profeel film attenuates the impact of sharp rocks on rough trails
Trail Protection
Protective mudguard around the base of the foot protects the lateral and medial sides from muddy trails. Anti-debris Mesh upper prevents debris from being trapped between your foot and the footbed. EnergyCell midsole, a high performance EVA foam, provides shock attenuation.
Product description
Great traction and rugged protection around the foot make the excursion TR11 ready to tackle the trails. With an updated knit mesh design it keeps out debris while being comfortable and wearable for all day use. A gore-tex slip lasted construction ensures your feet stay dry in even the rainiest conditions.
- Rubber sole
- 8mm - cushioning is distributed more evenly between the heel and forefoot in shoes with an 8mm offset, the result? Your body stays in a more balanced and comfortable position with every foot strike
- XT-600 carbon rubber - outsole provides traction and durability
- Cushioning - the underfoot feel and amount of impact protection provided by the compressing materials between the foot and running surface
- Support - the level of pronation control built into the shoe, pronation is the inward rolling of the ankle through the gait cycle
- Offset - the difference in height between the heel thickness and forefoot thickness of the shoe

User questions & answers
Question: | I mix trail with road and cross training. Are these versatile enough for this type of use |
Answer: | The sole is more less flat, with soft spikes on the surface. Some of these spikes have fallen off due to running on concrete and asphalt, so I should probably not run on roads anymore. Shoes might be a bit soft for doing squats and deadlifts in the gym. |
Question: | How are they on asphalt, track |
Answer: | I run on asphalt here on base in them. They work great, especially on dirty surfaces. I never tried them on track, but judging by how aggressive the treads are, I think they would be too sticky for that. |
Question: | Is the sole as soft as the speedcross 3? Like will they wear as fast |
Answer: | Very soft, and wears out fast. The sole of my pair of speedcross 4 showed signs of serious wear after only two months and about 50 miles. I am a little disappointed since they are not inexpensive shoes. |
Question: | i normally wear a 7.5 or 8 depending on the shoe, What size should i be getting it says on top the shoe runs small |
Answer: | I wear an 8.5 - 9 in other shoes. I had to buy these in 9.5, the 9 was way too tight on the sides. These shoes are SKINNY |

User questions & answers
Question: | Gel-Kahana 5 or Gel-Kahana 8? or something else better? im 10-11 4ee shoe size |
Answer: | I would. My son has a pretty narrow forefoot and these fit him will. |
Question: | Approximately, what width do you think is the kahana 8? d width or ee width |
Answer: | If I'm not mistaken, it means Trail Runner. The number is just the edition. The TR12 is the latest version of the trail runner. |
Question: | What does the d/m on the sizes stand for |
Answer: | There’s only one TR model. TR 12 is the latest generation of TR. TR 11 was the previous generation. TR 10 before that, etc. |
Question: | are these shoes good for someone with low arches? My husband has flat feet and many shoes rub him the wrong way lol |
Answer: | I don't know. I know they usually have a Regular and a Wide. If it helps you I have really wide feet and their regular 11.5 and wide 11.5 fit great. So its possible their shoes are a bit on the wider side in general. I have very wide feet and these shoes fit better than most out of the box so take that in to consideration. |

Question: | are these good for running and someone with plantar fasciitis |
Answer: | I don’t run but I do have severe planter fasciitis and they seem to be helping my feet not to hurt as much as they were before these shoes! |
Question: | How deep are grooves on bottom of shoe |
Answer: | About an 1/8 of an inch |
Question: | Are they true to size |
Answer: | Depending on your usual running shoe size I’d say yes—I wear 7 1/2 in most other shoe types but always an 8 in running shoes, always 8 in Asics and these fit well. |
Question: | Can you remove the existing innersole for an orthotic |
Answer: | Yes. But, order one size larger. They run small anyway. I ordered mine in my normal size, and I just got into them as it is. I wanted extra support, so I don't mind as much. I would never be able to put in an orthotic and my foot. |
