Answer:	It is square and rigid and pivots from the down to the up position. It is less than 1/2" long-maybe only 1/4"? It is a miniature of the type of opening the Breck shampoo bottles used to have in the 1980's if you are old enough to remember.

I have to wear thick socks on one pair of my 16's. I'd order and try them and return if necessary. The pronation control in the Mizuno shoes is the best I could find. Seems that running shoe makers are dropping quality and control devices but keeping or raising the price. I like a firm toe box. The 16's toe box doesn't have a solid toe box but they were the best I could find.

I went ahead and ordered the D 'medium' which is actually very NARROW. The shoes came and they just fit me with the laces all the way stretched out. That said, I like them anyway - they're light and the sole is solid. The box only says size 10.5 and No width letter. And they don't show the width letter on the shoe's label either. Good shoe, not great sizing.So, Zappo's / Amazon has some work to do to avoid confusion and returns, just stock the medium wides, please. And start labeling the shoes better.

Answer:	A simple way to define a textured outsole is to say it is a raised print along the (rubber) sole of the shoe/sandal; craftsmanship, more than cosmetics. In my opinuon its actually attractive and adds to the overall rugged look of the sandal. It's not really noticeable on the other hand, unless it's in your hand-again cosmetic. Look at the pictures again on the Amazon site, zoom in and you'll be able to see the texture/print along the (rubber) sole.

Read the comments & reviews and you will see others had the same issue. I was about to throw in the towel but decided to return them and try a different size 10.5 2E, and that shoe fits absolutely perfect and is one of *THE* most comfortable shoes I have ever owned in my life! Great value for the price, and the memory foam and "spongy" type sole make for a very pleasant walking experience. My recommendation is not order the M but try the E.
