14 best ice traction for shoes

Ice traction devices for shoes, also known as ice cleats or ice grips, are essential accessories for individuals who need to walk or work in icy and snowy conditions. These devices provide additional traction and grip on slippery surfaces, helping to prevent slips and falls. Here's what you should know about ice traction for shoes:

  1. Types of Ice Traction Devices:

    • Ice Cleats: These are strap-on or slip-on devices with metal spikes or studs that grip the ice and provide traction. They are versatile and can be used with various types of footwear, including regular shoes, boots, and even some dress shoes.
    • Shoe Chains: Similar to tire chains for cars, shoe chains consist of chains or cables with metal studs that wrap around the sole of your shoe or boot, offering excellent traction on icy surfaces.
    • Traction Overshoes: These are rubber overshoes with built-in spikes or studs. They slip over your regular shoes or boots, instantly providing additional grip.
    • Studded Boot Soles: Some winter boots come with built-in studs or spikes on the soles for enhanced traction. They are particularly popular among outdoor enthusiasts.
  2. Features to Consider:

    • Number and Type of Studs: The number and type of studs or spikes on the traction device can affect its performance.More studs provide better traction, and some designs offer multi-directional spikes for stability.
    • Material: Look for durable materials that can withstand cold temperatures without becoming brittle. Rubber, silicone, and stainless steel are commonly used materials.
    • Ease of Use: Choose ice traction devices that are easy to put on and take off. Some have adjustable straps or stretchy materials for quick installation.
    • Size and Fit: Ensure that the size of the device matches your shoe or boot size for a secure fit.
    • Portability: Consider how easy it is to carry the traction device when not in use. Some are foldable or compact, making them convenient to store in a bag or pocket.
  3. Safety Considerations:

    • Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for putting on and using ice traction devices.
    • Be cautious when walking on hard indoor surfaces, as some ice cleats or spikes can damage floors.
    • Remove the traction devices when not needed to avoid excessive wear on clear, dry surfaces.
    • Regularly inspect and maintain your ice traction devices to ensure that the studs or spikes are in good condition.
  4. When to Use Ice Traction Devices:

    • Ice traction devices are essential for walking on icy sidewalks, driveways, and trails.
    • They are useful for winter sports such as ice fishing, hiking, and snowshoeing.
    • Workers who spend time outdoors in winter conditions, like postal workers or construction workers, often rely on ice traction devices for safety.

By choosing the right ice traction device and using it correctly, you can significantly reduce the risk of slipping and falling on icy surfaces, ensuring your safety during winter months.

User questions & answers

Question: Getting for a woman who is 73 and in pretty good shape. Would you recommend for her
Answer: Yes, I recommend it for any age. Just make sure to REMOVE them when you go inside or on a clear surface, as they will be slippery on normal surfaces. ONLY for use in snow/ice.
Question: No size chart? What size is women's
Answer: I wear a Women's size 8. The manufacturer sizing information on the box, says for U.S. Women's Size 8, get a SMALL YakTrax. I have KEEN winter boots, size 8 medium. Keen's winter boot have a substantial heavy sole. There is no way that I can stretch the YakTrax Size S onto the KEEN boots. A medium would fit (but I haven't tried yet). The YakTrax SMALL just barely fits over a pair of "fashionable" winter boots, size 8, that have a dainty-sized,or thin sole. I suggest that you take your boots into a store and fit the YakTrax on before purchasing. If the stretch is too tight, you'll know right away (it'll strip off your nail polish and split a nail or two attempting). Be careful during the stretch 'cause it's like a sling shot! It can take an eye out! :) You want a YakTrax size that's easy enough to take off when you go indoors because on stone floors, these are slippery and on carpet, they will rip up the carpet. The manufacturer sizing information is misleading.
Question: Do these work well to run with on concrete sidewalks that are partially clear with snow and/or ice remaining only in spots
Answer: No. I wore a pair hiking where there were areas of the trail not covered in ice and snow and they were demolished after the one hike. They are only for ice and snow,
Question: sizing
Answer: There seems to be a discrepancy in the sizing info next to the product and the "picture" of the left side of it. I would go by the picture since it caption is Yaktrax!

User questions & answers

Question: What size does this fit
Answer: I can't remember what size I ordered but I think it was a medium and it fit both and myself and sis. I'm an ladies 8 1/2 and she a 9 1/2 I believe. They are quite stretchy though snug regardless of how much they need to stretch.
Question: Should i use large or medium size to put over Sorrel boots? (Boots are size
Answer: I'd go with a large. (I'm assuming this is a Men's size 10) The bottom of a Sorrel usually doesn't need extra traction... are you sure you need them?
Question: sizing
Answer: sorry about the last question I am a male I have a size 11 foot, should I use the 11.5 trax .
Question: I hate to judge a book by it's cover but these ice cleats just don't convince me. Are they effective on any icy surface, especially on black ice
Answer: I was skeptical as well, but I bought them because they were my only option locally. I was happy to find that they work on any ice, period. I wear them ice fishing, which features a 1 mile walk pulling a 60 pound sled across various types of ice to get to a good spot. Keep in mind that these aren't glue, though. I can run on the ice with them, but it's still possible to slip - especially in ~3" of new snow on ice. The snow is just deep enough to fill the cleats, then you've got snow on ice.

User questions & answers

Question: Use on a zodiac
Answer: I am unsure what you mean by a zodiac.
Question: size up
Answer: All I know is the wife is a U.S. Woman's size 9 and the mediums fit her shoes perfect. So I'm a 10 and figure the large ought to do me just fine.
Question: shoe size
Answer: I wear 7.5 and 8; I generally wear kind of outdoorsy/kind of hiking shoes. I got a Medium pair. They are pretty tight. I can't imagine trying to get them on a size 10 like the chart shows...maybe with sleek street shoes, but even then I think 9 would be pushing it.
Question: Has anyone used these hiking? how are they
Answer: Hiking on what? They are made for hiking on snow and ice and they do a great job for that. They are probably not necessary for hiking on dirt or rocks and would probably be uncomfortable.

User questions & answers

Question: How stable are these, when going downhill
Answer: We recently did an 8 mile round trip hike with an elevation gain of about 2000'. On the way back down I noticed that the chains had shifted a little but were still pretty much in place. This wasn't a super steep descent so it may not be the best test but it literally takes a few seconds to re-adjust these things. Walking uphill and downhill on ice is very easy and you don't even notice that you have them on. I hope that helps.
Question: I weight about 116. Would these still be the best traction cleats
Answer: Traction, for my wife - 109lbs, was perfect .....but they broke very early in usage. :(
Question: Do these work in the city where the're usually a mixture of ice and bare pavement
Answer: Yes, I walk on ice, snow and bare pavement. They can be slick on tile floors though. However, this is a great product!
Question: What size do I order for a women's insulated (Land's End), size 9 boot? Perhaps Large or Extra Large
Answer: I purchased a Medium to wear over my size 8 Lands End All Weather Mocs. Hope that helps.

User questions & answers

Question: I wear size 15 shoes, xl or 2xl
Answer: Get the large, they stretch well over work boots, just have to pull to fit. The rubber ring is well made, I have had no issues with mine and I use them on both shoes and snow boots.
Question: Sizes? I wear a size 10 men's shoe, but they also have to fit work boots
Answer: I'm sure they could. I will tell you though that I am a school bus driver and we are required to wear grippers in the bus yard. I bought these and they didn't last me 2 months. I only used them to walk on the pavement into work and across the icy bus lot. I was sorely disappointed when the rubber shredded and they literally fell apart.
Question: Can these be used for running Where surfaces will change from bare pavement to snowy/icy conditions
Answer: That's my same situation. I walk to work and the first stretch from my house is facing North & the woods, gravel road, then a very icy set of a couple blocks also on the North. The rest is always mixed. Some parts are completely clear so I have to walk on concrete a while. Intersections are icy so I can't risk taking them off. 3 years ago I fell and broke my wrist when one of my Yaktax broke and the coils got stuck on the gravel. The coil ones were the first kind I ever used and they wrre life savers. Needed to get a couple of pairs to make through the winter because they deteriorated quickly walking on sections of concrete. tried the cleat type and they were useless ad dulled quickly. This diamond grip are the best. Only one pair per winter. I replaced last year's because the rubber frame started to look a bit weak on some joints. They are good to be worn around the house while shoveling but not for a long walk. The new ones should make ot through the whole winter even with all the walking I do. I do not remove them from my boots to try to extend the life of the rubber. I change shoes when I get to work and put them upside down so they dry well. They can rust easily if you leave them wet on the ground.
Question: How are they on concrete? I'll be using them to walk to work and they plow the sidewalks better in some places than in others
Answer: Yes, This is pair. One for each shoe, but there is no right or left. They can be put on either shoe.

User questions & answers

Question: This is a 'pair' correct
Answer: Yes, This is pair. One for each shoe, but there is no right or left. They can be put on either shoe.
Question: I wear a size 9 men's safety shoe. I plan on just dedicating a pair of shoes to these cleats. What size should I buy
Answer: A large would fit your shoe perfectly (I wear the same size) since the frame of the cleat is rubberized and designed to stretch up to a men's size 11 or 12. This cleat is easily placed by stretching the frame from toe to heal and removal is just reversing the process. If you prefer another "easy on/easy off" cleat, I would also recommend the strap cleat that wraps around the ball of the shoe and is secured with velcro.
Question: Can these be worn when running on residential roads (concrete/pavement)? Or is this more of a trail running product
Answer: yes! you can definitely wear these while running on roads/pavement. I wear them all winter. they will save you from slipping when you run across an icy patch but they are perfectly OK to wear on the dry pavement. if I know my route will have a mix of ice and clear pavement, I wear them so I don't have to worry. after 1 hour or so you might start to feel them under your feet; make sure they are positioned correctly. I wear pretty sturdy traditional running shoes. with a more flexible / light weight shoe you might feel them more. but I consider them a winter outdoor running lifesaver! just wore them today for 10 miles on mixed surfaces but mostly road.
Question: size
Answer: It was a workout trying to get the S/M ones on a pair of size 6, and I didn't succeed. I honestly don't know how others have succeeded.

User questions & answers

Question: What size should I order for men's size
Answer: I wear a size 11 shoe and the large works great. I would expect that they would also work with a size 10. The rubber that the chain links connect to should hold them tight on your shoe. Unfortunately, you'll have to try it to find out. I recommend these highly.
Question: I wear a mens size 10,will a large work? Thanks
Answer: I will say they fit over a size 13 Muck Wetlands boots with some to spare. Depending on sole size you might stand a sporting chance.
Question: Would an XL fit over a men’s size
Answer: If you have a serious winter boot (as for ice fishing or snowmobiling), like a Baffin IceBreaker, you may need LG. My wife takes an 8 in her Baffins and wears Lg Yaktrax. For her smaller winter boots she is 7 1/2 and does a MD Yaktrax for those.
Question: What size should I order for ladies size
Answer: You will just need the regular Truck/SUV model for your 265/70/17's

Question: Will the women's size 7.5 - 10 fit snuggly on a size 6 women's boot (and stay on

Question: Do you have or recommend a product like this that will fit a men's size
