If you do not know what you are doing a 2 is probably as long as you would be able to get a clean and even cut. A 3 3/4 blade is probably the longest blade that gives an even buzz cut. I find that by the time you go to a 5 you need to throw a clip on a master's and spend an hour scrubbing away. Mind you these are barber numbers, for reference your "10" is a 1 in barber nomenclature. But 10 is used in the dog grooming world, I do not know why. But both groups use the same tools.
