The shirts were very comfortable and functional with their sun screen properties. Wuite satisfies with the wear and tear and if the were smelly, I didn't notice and my friends and family either didn't notice a smell or were to tactful to bring it up. Answer:	I don't see how it could be UPF 50, a 1/50th or 2% transmittance. SkinCancer.org's webpage "Sun-protective clothing" advises to check a fabric by holding it up to light, since if you can see through it, UV radiation will readily reach your skin. Having this product in black, and holding a single, unstretched layer of the fabric up to modest, household light, I can basically see right through it.
