Answer:	I'm not sure exactly how to answer this as I've never viewed it as a "conversion...." It has a heavy duty fabric top handle and one on the side as well, depending on how you want to carry it when it isn't on your back or over your shoulder... The back straps do not entrely remove, but they detach at the bottom and can be almost completely stuffed into side pouches specifically for the purpose, so it mostly gets them out of the way if you are carrying it as a briefcase. Gotta say, I LOVE this bag! best one I've ever owned; excellent construction, sturdy, so many pockets and zipper compartments for all sorts of anything you want to carry, padded if you put a laptop inside and also has a semi-hard internal "shelf" in the main opening the laptop rests on and keeps it protected. If the stack of books is full-sized 9x11" books it will comfortably fit a 3" tall stack of books. You can probably fit up to a 4" tall stack of books if some of them are less than 9X11" across the face.
