A megahit with young country fans, Kenny Chesney may seem like an accidental star, but he's succeeded largely by understanding what his following wants to hear. No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems taps directly into the squiggly vein that runs between adolescence and adulthood, when responsibilities call and Jimmy Buffett dreams beckon. As much a celebration of life as of youth itself, the album succeeds best when Chesney turns wistful and thought-provoking ("A Lot of Things Different," "Good Stuff") and makes firm decisions about what really matters in life. Sentimentality reigns supreme--you can already imagine a sea of flickering cigarette lighters when he does this material live--but as "Big Star," a song about a girl who wants to be just that, spells out, No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems is a solid affirmation to go for what you want in this silly ol' world. Chesney certainly has, and if this short, bald guy from tinytown, Tennessee, can catch a rainbow, the rest of us ought to take heart. --Alanna Nash

Over a four-decade career, there's not a lot Amos Garrett hasn't done. As one of the most distinctive guitar players since the Telecaster was invented, he's made almost a dozen albums of his own, most of them for the Edmonton-based label Stony Plain. He's appeared on more than 150 artists' recordings, and he's played rock and roll, folk and pop. Not to mention just about every other kind of roots music there is, from blues to country. He's played and recorded with Paul Butterfield, Ian Tyson, Bonnie Raitt, Jesse Winchester, Maria Muldaur, Emmylou Harris, Bobby Charles and even Anne Murray.

The music of Tim O'Brien's Rock in My Shoe neatly defines the artist's considerable range as singer, songwriter, and picker. The album offers soul-flavored bluegrass (a duet with Glenn Zankey on the spirited "Climbin' Up a Mountain"), honky-tonk humor (a rowdy, sing-along string-band version of the Neal McCoy hit, "Small Up and Simple Down"), and pretty ballads (an evocative story about a girl escaping a small town to find the "Edge of the Storm"). Best of all is the catchy Cajun tune about a romantic memory that irritates like a "Rock in My Shoe." All in all, Tim O'Brien straddles the boundary between bluegrass and country better than anyone since the days before Ricky Skaggs got too preachy. --Geoffrey Himes

Steve Poltz - Left One Shoe - CD
Poltz spent more than a decade fronting goofball San Diego rockers The Rugburns before becoming an "overnight sensation" as the cowriter of Jewel's smash single "You Were Meant for Me." On One Left Shoe, he steps out in a similar singer-songwriterly direction, fashioning a collection of confessional folk pop tunes that are about evenly split between movingly memorable and blandly boring. Jewel sings along on the catchiest tune of the bunch, "Silver Lining" (which she cowrote with Poltz); other highlights include "The Great Mystery" and "Kicking Distance." At 57 minutes, the album would be stronger with three or four of the weaker tunes left off; but as a solo debut, One Left Shoe is a largely auspicious affair. --Peter Blackstock
Review
Poltz's solo debut is at least witty and musical enough to lift him from the shadow of his former girlfriend Jewel.... Poltz's often wry and pining tunes evoke the work of one of his idols, Rickie Lee Jones.... Sense of humor is not the strong point of many pop singers, and it's refreshing to find one performer who can laugh at himself a little. -- People

NEW Combo BLUWAVS CD and FLAC FILE
Robert Cray's spent the '90s evolving from West Coast bluesman to Memphis soul belter. So Cray's restrained guitar playing on his first CD for Rykodisc--after his unhappy departure from his longtime label Mercury--comes as no surprise. What's shocking is the utter perfection of his emulation of the signature sounds of the classic Stax and Hi Records singles of the '60s and early '70s. Cray's voice exhibits the delirious growl-to-falsetto flights of a young Al Green on numbers like "What About Me," "Love Gone to Waste," and the prisoner-of-love weeper "Pardon." But his arrangements--heavy on kick drum, fatback horn grooves, and organ flourishes--retain a grit that Hi in particular lost over time. And when he launches into a guitar solo like the probing corker that climaxes his take on Willie Dixon's "Toll the Bells," Cray rekindles the influence of his late mentor Albert Collins and reasserts himself as a torchbearer of stinging blues. --Ted Drozdowski
Review
The album is animated, airy, and decidedly soulful. -- Vibe
From the Label
On his Rykodisc debut, Cray's passion for sweet soul music takes center stage. Recalling the timeless soul magic of the Stax and Hi labels, Take Your Shoes Off updates that sound with an injection of Robert's dynamic vocals and guitar. Avoiding glossy studio techniques, producer Steve Jordan (Keith Richards, Aretha Franklin) captures a raw, gritty, and emotional experience. Take Your Shoes Off may well be the best soul album of the last two decades and is The Robert Cray Band's finest hour.
Since the release of 1986's multi-platinum, Grammy®-winning Strong Persuader album, Robert Cray has comfortably ruled modern blues, but the stunning soul sounds of Take Your Shoes Off prove that Cray truly lives at the crossroads of rock, R&B, blues and soul music.

Blue Suede Shoes: Elvis Songs for Kids
It's been done before but never this adorably: Music for Little People's Blue Suede Shoes: Elvis Songs for Kids invokes the spirit of the King with 12 rockin' tunes, all belted with gusto by a gang of kids--some, by the sound of it, as young as age 6. Mostly they tackle the megahits. "Hound Dog," "Don't Be Cruel," and "Jailhouse Rock" all get covered--but if the song selection isn't much of a shocker, what is surprising is the soul some of these slick kiddie crooners deliver. Both "All Shook Up" and "Stuck on You" are powerhouses of the kind that send visions of swiveling little hips and painted-on sideburns swirling in your head. Other selections, such as "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear" and "Baby, Let's Play House," are performed in a sweeter, cutesier style, but that's not to say they're weak by comparison. Nor do they contribute to a jumbled, uneven mix. Instead, the suit-yourself interpretations lend this album the feel of a junior talent show, the kind nobody wants to judge because every contestant deserves to be keeper of the crown. Grown-up Elvis enthusiasts with kids will be first in line to pick up a copy of Blue Suede Shoes (what better way to be sure their hero doesn't leave the building, at least for another generation?), but anybody of a mind to make music history a chapter in his or her child's education ought to check it out, too. That doesn't mean kids too young to swallow such a culturally significant discussion ought to be excluded, though. One spin of this thoroughly rollicking album and they're sure to do what comes naturally: Shake, rattle, and roll to a handful of songs that set the world on fire. --Tammy La Gorce
