Product description

Reissue of the 2011 vinyl-only collection of 12 Blaze tracks released by Secret Seven Records. Compiled from home, studio and intimate live recordings between 1976 - 1988, this 'Best of Blaze' sampler features Blaze's renditions of songs since covered by Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett and John Prine. Culled from posthumous CDs released by Lost Art Records and Fat Possum, Clay Pigeons' 2011 release marked the first available vinyl LP from one of Texas' most unique and soulful singer-songwriters. Widespread recognition eluded Blaze during his lifetime. Murdered in an early morning altercation just days following the recording sessions for his Live at the Austin Outhouse release, Blaze was just 39 years old. Two tracks from those sessions appear on this LP. Blaze's reputation as a singer-songwriter has exploded in recent years. Lucinda Williams' "Drunken Angel," and Townes Van Zandt's "Blaze's Blues," both heartfelt personal tributes to their good friend Foley, have added to a legacy once nearly forgotten. Lost Art Records previously released five Foley albums including the soundtrack CD to the acclaimed documentary, Duct Tape Messiah by filmmaker Kevin Triplett. BLAZE, a major motion picture on Blaze's career directed by Ethan Hawke was released in 2018. "Blaze is one of the most spiritual cats I've ever met; an ace finger picker; a writer who never shirks the truth and never fails to rhyme," - Townes Van Zandt.

The Tree of Forgiveness

Product description

The highly-anticipated album, The Tree of Forgiveness, is Prine's first collection of new material since 2005's Grammy-winning Fair and Square. Rather than going out on a limb, Prine cultivated the themes that have brought international acclaim since the 1970s. For example, he can take a topic like loneliness and make it funny or heartbreaking.

Prine teamed with Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb to record in Nashville's historic Studio A, enlisting friends like Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell, and Amanda Shires to sing along. The songs are new, although some had waited to be finished for decades, like a co-write with Phil Spectro called "God Only Knows." Another incomplete song, "I Have Met My Love Today," now celebrates the unexpected spark that leads to lifelong romance -- with a dash of youthful innocence. The musical arrangements may be simpler than on past efforts, yet his unique ability to distill complex emotions into everyday language remains fully intact.

About The Artist

After nearly 50 years on the road, hotel rooms are a familiar enough sight. Following two bellmen to his suite, Prine settled in with four guitars and 10 boxes of legal pads to complete the album that would become The Tree of Forgiveness. he highly-anticipated album, The Tree of Forgiveness, is Prine’s first collection of new material since 2005’s Grammy-winning Fair and Square. Rather than going out on a limb, Prine cultivated the themes that have brought international acclaim since the 1970s. For example, he can take a topic like loneliness and make it funny (“Knockin’ on Your Screen Door”) or heartbreaking (“Summers End”). Perfectly aligned with his quirkiest songs, “The Lonesome Friends of Science” makes its point through the characters he calls “those bastards in the white lab coats who experiment with mountain goats,” as well as the discredited planet Pluto and the towering Vulcan statue in Birmingham, Alabama.

The only available recording from this legendary Austin, Texas singer/songwriter. Contains "If I Could Only Fly," a song recorded by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.

Review

"Blaze Foley and his songs are most definately in a league of their own. Superb songs and a great, great performance." -- Peter Holmstedt, Entertainment Network Scandinavia.

"Foley wrote and sang story songs so vividly full of ache, sadness, reflection, and the naked truth that I believe he may have attained that level of direct realism that songsmiths such as Kristofferson, Dylan, and Haggard are always trying to reach . . . the guy can write, and no one covers his material better than he does. All the right ingredients to become a new sensation." -- Joe Nick Patoski, Senior Editor, Texas Monthly

"His stories and songs capture bits of life with remarkable precision for their brevity. Townes Van Zandt was a friend and champion of Foley's songs, and it's easy to see why; Foley lays his soul out, which occupied the same dark hollow that VanZandt's inhabited, yet his blues and folk melodies bring emotions to life in ways that very few, except VanZandt, of course, have ever been able to do. Live at the Austin Outhouse portrays his humanity and offers ample proof as to why his music is remembered a decade after his death." -- Austin Chronicle
