Great American Songbook: The Women

Things are changing now, but apart from some pianists, there have been few women instrumentalists in jazz. On the other hand, women dominate the history of jazz singing. Adelaide Hall shocked listeners in 1927 with her throaty, feline growl. Mildred Bailey, Maxine Sullivan, and Lena Horne were stars of the swing era who spent their entire careers working alongside the best jazz musicians of the day. In the 1950s, Julie London, singing in little more than a whisper, recorded exquisite miniatures with minimal accompaniment. Anita O’Day showed a new generation the way into bebop. And Peggy Lee, who was once told by Louis Armstrong that she was 'born to swing,' not only enjoyed a long and glorious career but also wrote songs with both Duke Ellington and Quincy Jones. And they all depended on the Great American Songbook—in Peggy’s case adding a few of her own to it. The variety of styles and voices among these jazz singers is endless. Some didn’t even call themselves 'jazz singers'—Julie London, for instance described herself as a 'song stylist.' There’s no handy definition. A jazz singer is one who is accepted by jazz musicians and listeners as one of their own.

3-Second Riff

Most of the female singing stars of the 1950s, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, and Doris Day among them, served their apprenticeships in jazz-based big bands.

3-Minute Improvisation

It’s no accident that the marvelous variety of both male and female singers’ voices—the warm or cool tones, the whispers, the growls—began to emerge only toward the end of the 1920s. That’s when the microphone came into general use for radio, recording, and live amplification. The microphone conveyed the slightest inflexion, the merest hint of a smile or sob in the voice, in living, breathing, just-for-you intimacy. It was a revolution in human communication.
