12 best mower engines

Mower engines are the powerplants that drive various types of lawnmowers, including push mowers, self-propelled mowers, and riding mowers. These engines are specifically designed to provide the necessary power and reliability to cut grass effectively. Here are some key aspects of mower engines:

  1. Types of Mower Engines:

    • Gasoline Engines: Gasoline-powered engines are the most common type of mower engines. They are available in various sizes and power levels to match the requirements of different mower types.
    • Electric Motors: Some lawnmowers, particularly corded electric and cordless battery-powered models, use electric motors. These motors are typically quieter and produce zero emissions.
    • Propane Engines: Propane-powered mower engines are used in commercial settings where emissions regulations are stricter. They are cleaner-burning than gasoline engines.
  2. Horsepower: Mower engines are rated in terms of horsepower (HP), which indicates their power output. The higher the horsepower, the more robust the engine, making it suitable for larger or more demanding lawnmower applications.

  3. Engine Start: Mower engines can have different starting mechanisms, including pull-starts, electric starters, or keyless ignition systems. Electric starters are convenient and reduce the effort required to start the engine.

  4. Air-Cooled vs. Liquid-Cooled: Most mower engines are air-cooled, meaning they dissipate heat through fins on the engine's exterior. Some larger or commercial-grade engines may be liquid-cooled, which involves a radiator and coolant system to manage engine temperature more efficiently.

  5. Engine Displacement: Engine displacement is a measure of the engine's size and capacity. Larger displacement engines typically generate more power and torque. Displacement is measured in cubic centimeters (cc) for small engines and cubic inches (ci) for larger engines.

  6. Maintenance: Mower engines require regular maintenance, including oil changes, air filter replacement, and spark plug replacement. Proper maintenance ensures the engine's longevity and optimal performance.

  7. Fuel Type: Gasoline engines run on unleaded gasoline, while propane engines use propane fuel. Electric motors, on the other hand, are powered by electricity. Using the correct fuel type is essential for engine efficiency and longevity.

  8. Emissions and Environmental Considerations: Gasoline-powered mower engines emit greenhouse gases and pollutants. As a result, there has been a growing interest in electric and propane-powered alternatives, which produce fewer emissions and are considered more environmentally friendly.

  9. Noise Level: Gasoline engines tend to be noisier than electric motors. Noise levels can vary between different mower engine models, and quieter engines are often preferred for residential use.

  10. Brand and Model: Various manufacturers produce mower engines, including Briggs & Stratton, Honda, Kohler, and others. The brand and model of the engine can influence its performance and reliability.

In conclusion, mower engines are essential components of lawnmowers, providing the power needed to cut grass efficiently. They come in various types, sizes, and configurations to match different mower designs and user preferences. Regular maintenance and choosing the right type of engine for your specific needs are key factors in ensuring the longevity and performance of your lawnmower.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this replace Briggs & Stratton 331877-1371-B1 engine
Answer: The replacement model number for your engine would be 331877-3036-G5. To determine if this engine would work, you would need to check the shaft size and dimensions of the engine to see if they are the same. This has a 1" x 3 5/32" shaft and would have a 10" bolt circle. The measurements of the engine are 18" L x 17" W x 16" H. It is a 17.5 HP engine.
Question: hp vertical shaft for log splitter for a 37 ton splitter
Answer: You would want to check the shaft size and bolt pattern on your existing engine to see if this would work as a replacement. This engine has a 1" x 3 5/32" shaft with a 10" bolt circle.
Question: Can this engine replace a kawasaki fh500v on a bob cat 48" walk behind mower
Answer: If the bolt pattern, shaft diameter, shaft keyway size and rotational direction are the same for both motors they should exchange. You'll just need to figure out the electrics. The documentation on those is (ahem) *sparse*. good luck
Question: I have a bobcat 48" walk behind mower and need to replace the worn out engine.does this engine have the same bolt up pattern as kawasaki fs481 engine
Answer: I replaced a Kohler ProCommand 15hp with this engine. The bolt pattern is fine. Other considerations: shaft length, shaft diameter, and tap size (or key size). My Kohler had no electrical components, and this engine is set up for electric start (no electric starter, rather recoil). This engine has a solenoid in the carb to shut when engine is shut off. The solenoid is operated off the electric supply on the engine (yes, it has an alternator). This means the fuel supply is shut off until power is supplied to the solenoid. I took the solenoid out, snipped off the plunger, so the flow is never inhibited. Also, there is no way to shut the engine off - remember it is set up for electric control, that is a key switch. My Kohler setup had none of this. A ground wire comes off the alternator, and it needs to be used to shut down the engine. I mounted a toggle switch on the dash, ran wires up to the switch, so that I can toggle ground wire continuity, or open. This only one, of many ways to solve this problem. The engine runs well, has more power than my Kohler ProCommand 15. But, it is not a long-service engine. I expect 300-400 hours before failure, and that is OK with me (my Kohler had over 5,000 hrs).

User questions & answers

Question: Will this engine replace kohler command pro 25 on dixon ztr
Answer: yes
Question: will this engine replace zero turn 747cc kohler
Answer: It should bolt in. Most small engines have a similar bolt pattern.
Question: I have a lt2000 craftsman with a 20hp brighton and stranton engine and does it fit? does it come with fuel injector or carbs
Answer: The engine is complete and ready to install. I used it to replace a Briggs opposed twin and it bolted right in. you will need to get a kohler muffler kit to complete the install. I had to make some minor modifications to the hood mount brackets for the exhaust headers, but nothing an average inclined handyman cant do. the engine wiring plug may be different ant require some wiring mods, but is doable.
Question: Will this engine fit? i have a 2005 simplicity champion ztr with a single cyclinder kohler
Answer: Anything is possible! It should bolt in ok. May have to alter a couple of the engine protection guards. Main thing is if the shaft size of your old engine is the same so you can transfer the pulleys to the new engine. Ke3ep in mind that any engine swap requires a little knowledge of some mechanic skills and wiring skills in case harnesses are different.

Question: Are the mounting holes the same as a B&S440000 shaft diameter and length seems to be the same no pics of bottom side of motor to reference, thank you
Answer: Ok
Question: Will this work on a 60” cut Montana zero turn
Answer: I don't know bout that brand. I got all my specs from my BiG Dog mower engine. And it was an exact replacement engine .it's running good. U need all your specs from you engine your replacing. And the diameter of your engine shaft that the electric clutch slides on.
Question: What size is the shaft
Answer: The shaft size is 1-1/8" x 4-19/64". I used it to replace a 22 hp model 40H777 v-twin on a Husqvarna 2254 GT and it was an exact fit. Mounting holes on engine required tapping, 3/8"-16 I believe, or rely on B&S self tapping screws from initial installation. Mine did not require a manual choke and so far I am very happy with this selection.
Question: Shaft lenght
Answer: Shaft Length (In.): 4-19/64

  • Professional Series, Commercial Series (Industrial/Commercial) engines are cast iron sleeved. Select for medium duty commercial, industrial and rental use.
  • Intek and Powerbuilt engines are aluminum cylinder bore OHV engines. Select for general consumer use.
  • Standard engines are aluminum cylinder bore, side valve engines. Select for general consumer use.

Engine Installation

It is important to maintain the original engine’s size, starter type and position, fuel tank location, fuel line routing, muffler location, exhaust direction and muffler accessories (i.e., deflector, spark arrester, etc.). Reinstall all guards, shields and safety devices. Replace missing, worn or damaged parts.

Vertical Crankshaft Engines

Compare the overall engine size to avoid possible mounting interference.

  • Match the crankshaft

  1. A - Diameter
  2. B - Height (distance from base to crankshaft center line)
  3. C - Length (distance from oil seal/cover’s mounting face to end of crankshaft)

  • Match the crankshaft type, i.e., keyway, tapered or threaded
  • Match the crankcase cover’s tapped holes for mounting accessories (if applicable)
  • Match the base mounting dimensions and bolt hole spacing

Engine Maintenance

Regular lawn mower maintenance helps prevent problems, plus lengthens the life of your lawn equipment. But even with plenty of TLC, normal wear and tear from hours of mowing the lawn increases the chances of hitting a glitch from time to time. We recommend using our maintenance kits to ensure your engine is running smoothly all season long.
