13 best nikon flashes
Nikon flashes, also known as Nikon Speedlights, are external flash units designed for Nikon cameras. They are crucial tools for professional and amateur photographers alike, providing additional light in situations where the built-in flash of the camera may not be sufficient. Here's what you need to know about Nikon flashes:
Compatibility:
- Nikon flashes are specifically designed to be compatible with Nikon DSLR and mirrorless cameras. They often have features that allow for seamless communication with Nikon camera systems.
Variety of Models:
- Nikon offers a range of flash models, from entry-level options to more advanced and powerful units. The specific model you choose will depend on your photography needs and budget.
TTL vs. Manual Mode:
- Nikon Speedlights typically offer both TTL (Through The Lens) and manual modes. TTL mode allows the flash to automatically adjust its output based on the camera's metering system, while manual mode gives the photographer full control over the flash power settings.
Wireless Flash Control:
- Many Nikon flashes have the ability to function wirelessly, either as a remote flash or as a master unit to control other off-camera flashes. This is a powerful feature for creative lighting setups.
Bounce and Swivel Capabilities:
- Nikon Speedlights often have the ability to tilt and swivel, allowing you to bounce the flash off ceilings, walls, or reflectors for softer and more natural-looking light.
High-Speed Sync:
- Some advanced Nikon flashes support high-speed sync, allowing you to use flash at faster shutter speeds than the camera's normal sync speed. This is useful for freezing fast-moving subjects in well-lit environments.
Built-In Diffusers and Gels:
- Certain Nikon flash models come with built-in diffusers and colored gels that can be used to modify the quality and color of the light.
Power Source:
- Nikon flashes are powered by either disposable batteries (like AA batteries) or rechargeable battery packs, depending on the model. Consider the type of power source that best suits your shooting style.
Accessories and Modifiers:
- Nikon offers a range of accessories and modifiers for their flashes, including softboxes, diffusers, and color gels, to further customize the quality of light.
Learning and Practice:
- Using an external flash effectively requires some practice and experimentation. Understanding concepts like flash exposure compensation, bounce angles, and diffuser usage can significantly enhance your photography.
Remember, the choice of a Nikon flash depends on your specific needs, the type of photography you're interested in, and your budget. It's always a good idea to research and potentially try out different models to find the one that suits you best.

Take control of the lighting around you with the Nikon SB-300 AF Speedlight for D-SLRs and hot-shoe equipped Coolpix cameras. Find new inspiration: use the 120° tilting head to bounce the flash off a nearby wall or ceiling (bounce flash), eliminate unwanted shadows on your subject (fill-flash) or illuminate a poorly lit scene with a soft, balanced light tailored to your shot. Shed Light on New Opportunities With the SB-300 AF Speedlight, you'll enjoy a flash that's soft and balanced for excellent color, skin tones and lighting throughout your entire composition-not just on your main subject. Use it in bright situations to fill in unwanted shadows (fill-flash), or use its 120° tilt capability to bounce your flash off the ceiling or a nearby wall for even softer, less direct lighting on your subject (bounce technique). Outstanding Flash Precision Nikons i-TTL (intelligent Through-The-Lens) flash coverage technology tailors the characteristic of the flash to the shot. An imperceptible pre-flash fires milliseconds before the main flash to gather information about the scene-shadow areas, subject distance and reflectance. Your i-TTL capable camera and the SB-300 AF Speedlight then work together to achieve the best exposure and white balance setting possible, all in a fraction of a second.
From the Manufacturer

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this works perfectly with Nikon Z |
Answer: | Yes. Any lens with the old Minolta AF mount will work on the a350 |
Question: | Does it work with older Nikon film cameras, e.g. FG |
Answer: | I too have a Minolta camera 35mm film. I bought this DSLRA350 with the idea that my Minolta lens would fit this new camera. They do not. This is still an excellent camera but you will need to buy lens to fit it. I have been very happy with Tamron AF 18-200mm. I bought it through Amazon.com. I also bought Tamron AF 70-300mm. |
Question: | Will this flash work with a Nikon D |
Answer: | Hello, the lens will not be compatible as-is, it will necessitate an adapter from A to E mount. The camera will switch to APS-C mode. |
Question: | Will this flash work with my Nikon D |
Answer: | It attaches via the standard A mount. I looked and a200 uses A mount, so it should not be a problem |

Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight
Introducing Nikon's new flagship Speed light, a flash designed to empower the most seasoned professionals and passionate enthusiasts. The SB-5000 AF Speed light takes Nikon's acclaimed Creative Lighting System with Advanced Wireless Lighting to the next level with both traditional optical wireless control and powerful new radio control. Place up to six groups of remote flashes out of view, behind obstacles—even in other rooms—up to 98 feet away. Whether building a new lighting system or integrating with your existing system, the SB-5000 AF Speed light opens exciting new lighting possibilities.
Light without limits
The SB-5000 AF Speedlight introduces powerful radio control Advanced Wireless Lighting (AWL) communication to Nikon's innovative Creative Lighting System for exciting lighting possibilities. When used with a compatible series, with the optional WR-A10 (Wireless Remote Adapter) when attached to D5 and WR-R10 Wireless Remote Controller (transceiver) (requires firmware version 3.0 or later), you can control up to 6 groups (A/B/C/D/E/F) of SB-5000 AF Speed light behind obstacles, around corners, in bright sunlight—even in different rooms—up to 98 feet away. The SB-5000 AF Speed light also integrates seamlessly with Nikon's optical wireless Speed lights and cameras.
Nonstop performance
For studio, wedding, event and action photographers, continuous shooting is the name of the game. The SB-5000 AF Speedlight can handle more than 100 consecutive firings at full output without overheating, thanks to an innovative built-in cooling system and a brilliant heat-shedding design. For TTL shooters, this means a new level of lighting control while capturing decisive moments. Great shots don't wait for a flash to be ready, and neither should you.
Reimagined design
Designed for photographers who rely on portable lighting, the SB-5000 AF Speed light is smaller and easier to use. It has a smaller footprint and provides streamlined access to frequently used functions such as Flash Mode, Zoom Head Position and Flash Compensation Value. Like a DSLR camera, the SB-5000 AF Speed light has an “Info” button for quick access to your favorite settings. For more fluid operation when using radio control, you can adjust settings right from a compatible camera's menu.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this work with the SB |
Answer: | I believe As long as you have the standard hot shoe it would. There are no controls just seems to use the TTL circuitry. I have a few different nikons and it worked great on all. Just turn it on with camera in an auto mode and just works. My first one only worked about a year and died. I bought another. Way better than the built in flash but no we’re near as powerful as the bigger flashes. Good for general indoor small room shots with less than maybe 7 people or so. It’s the first flash I grab unless I need more light or creative flexibility. It’s small, lightweight and very convienient only 2 aaa batts.... only 2 1/2 “ x 1 1/2 “....tiny |
Question: | does this work with the SB |
Answer: | Just one small lens comes in this bundle. The camera is great though, at a good price. I can see why you asked, due to the picture showing the lens on and off the camera. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi will this work with a d5200 and a sb 700, even though the d5200 has no creative light system built in or does this take the place of it?? thank you |
Answer: | The SB-5000 is slightly more powerful than the SB-910 and is a little smaller in size. The menus are easier to use as is the switch on the back that selects the modes. The SB-5000 is compatible as a remote flash with the SU-800 and will also respond as a slave (remote) unit with any of the current Commander master flash units, such as the SB-700, SB-800, SB-900, and SB-910. I truly like this new SB-5000, it is able to handle Radio AWL with the WR-R10 Wireless transmitter and a Nikon D500 or D5 (but not yet for older Nikons unless a firmware update is issued, which I expect will be). Additionally, the SB-5000 is designed to shoot up to 100 consecutive full-power shots without overheating, unlike the SB-900 and SB-910. |
Question: | I bought a R1 twin flashes by Nikon, but im missing the Wireless Commander, is this the one |
Answer: | This flash works with my Nikon Z5 so it should work with the Z6 and Z7. |
Question: | Will this wirelessly control off brand flashes such as yongnuo |
Answer: | The SB-300 and any of the SB-xxx flashes will not work properly on Nikon Film Cameras. You can obtain a flash that will be much less expensive than a SB-300 and work properly on a FG. To help you in the best way possible please contact Rich at 800-991-3350 ext 2117. |
Question: | Hi will this work with a d5200 and a sb 700, even though the d5200 has no creative light system built in or does this take the place of it?? thank you |
Answer: | Will work with all Nikon D cameras |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why is the Nikon SB-700 cheaper than the SB-600? I would think the SB-700 is the better product and I want to buy one for my D |
Answer: | Katy, it should... I have an SB700. As long as it has the hot shot on the bottom of the flash it should work. Happy shooting! |
Question: | Does sb 600 work with nikon d810 or d3x |
Answer: | No, you can still use those for further connectivity, especially with other flash units. With a supported Nikon Camera, you have full control without the need for any other gear. The PW are great for a lot more. |
Question: | work with the d |
Answer: | Yes it does. The radio control won't |
Question: | Will this flash work with a D |
Answer: | Yes, the SB-5000 will work in normal optical mode for Nikon CLS (Optical AWL), just like the older Nikon flash units (e.g., SB-700, SB-800, SB-900, SB-910, or SU-800). It can be used as a Master flash (Commander) or a remote flash. I do not believe that you can control the SB-5000 with the WR-R10 transmitter for Radio AWL as of yet with cameras older than the Nikon D500 (or D5) because they do not have the new Flash control menu that lets you control how the WR-10 transmitter works. It will require that Nikon do a firmware update to the Nikon D750, D7200, and other cameras to be able to use the WR-R10 with the SB-5000. |

The SB-900 i-TTL Speedlight leads the Nikon Creative Lighting System by delivering the portability, power, and versatility to support any photographer's creative lighting imagination. The SB-900 works as a wireless standalone flash, or you can use it as a commander or wireless remote light source. In commander mode, the SB-900 controls up to three remote Speedlight groups and an unlimited number of compatible Speedlights, with four wireless channel options helping you manage wireless conflicts in multiple photographer environments. The flash also offers streamlined controls and menus, including a rotary select dial that sets key flash functions quickly, along with a prominent master and remote control switch to simplify wireless operation.
Photographers working on zoom photos will appreciate the SB-900's expanded auto power zoom coverage, which ranges from 17 to 200mm in the FX format to 12 to 200mm in the DX format. Photographers also have the choice of three light distribution patterns: standard (for general illumination), center-weighted (for portraits), and even (for groups or interiors). Finally, the SB-900 automatically identifies mounted color gel filters and adjusts the camera's auto white balance setting (available with select Nikon digital SLR cameras). Other details include automatic FX/DX format identification; user-friendly firmware updating; flash tube overheat protection; and a drip-proof mounting foot cover.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it comparable with the D |
Answer: | Yep, good luck. |
Question: | it works perfect with nikon d |
Answer: | Yes, but you need a Yongnuo model nikon version that supports TTL optical slave mode. Much better and cheaper instead to get a Godox x1t radio transmitter/receiver pair. Better yet replace the Yongnuo with a Godox model with built-in radio receiver (such as TT685N). |
Question: | Does the nikon speedlight sb-900 work well with the nikon d7100 and d750 cameras |
Answer: | From Nikon's page on the D5200: "Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS) Advanced Wireless Lighting supported with SB-910, SB-900, SB-800 or SB-700 as a master flash or SU-800 as commander; Flash Color Information Communication supported with all CLS-compatible flash units" |
Question: | It it comparable for the D |
Answer: | Yes |
