Treacle Pudding

Apparently, Harry loves anything treacle. He’s always reaching for the treacle tart, and he seems to really like the treacle pudding Mrs. Weasley prepared for dessert the night before he left the Burrow for Hogwarts (see Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 5).

Treacle is like molasses and is made during sugar refining. Black treacle is like dark molasses, and light treacle is also called golden syrup, which can be found in some supermarkets and specialty food stores. The light variety is so good that if you buy it you might find yourself sneaking spoonfuls every now and then.

1. Fill a large pot with water and place a shallow bowl upside down inside the pot. Bring the water to a boil. Butter and flour a 2½-quart round baking dish or glass bowl and its lid; set aside.

2. Whisk the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together in a mixing bowl and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, sugar, and the ⅓ cup golden syrup or molasses, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed, until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing at medium speed until incorporated, about 30 seconds after each. Add the lemon zest and juice and beat until incorporated. Scrape down the sides and add the flour mixture alternately with the milk, mixing on the lowest speed just until incorporated and beginning and ending with the flour. Use a rubber spatula to scrape the sides and bottom and fold the mixture together.

3. Pour the ½ cup golden syrup or molasses into the bottom of the baking dish or glass bowl. Scrape the batter into the dish and smooth the top with the rubber spatula. Cover tightly with the lid and place it in the pot on top of the overturned bowl, making sure the water comes halfway up the sides. Cover the pot and simmer for 2½ hours. Check every so often to see if more water needs to be added (don’t let the pot boil dry).

4. Remove the pudding from the pot. Remove the lid and invert the pudding onto a serving dish. Serve with warmed golden syrup.

How to use it:

1) Align:

Adjust the rollers of the bottle cutter so that the bottle rests well.

You have many adjustment options, so you can work very narrow bottles to very large bottles.

The bottom of the bottle rests against the high-standing sheet metal.

2) Scoring:

Turn the bottle under gentle pressure evenly and without settling in one direction - only once.

It is not good for the cutting wheel or the end result to go over the cut several times.

Note that the cutting wheel can push freely against the bottle.

3) Separate:

Method 1: Heat water and run the very hot water over the scribe. Turn the bottle slowly.

Then they immediately run cold water from the tap. Repeat the process a few times until the glass pieces fall apart.

Method 2: Heat the scratch with a candle flame, always turn the bottle and then quench it , put the bottle into ice water.

The process must be repeated several times.

4) Grinding:

If the bottle parts are separated, the sharp edges should be processed with sandpaper.

Matters need attention

1.The glass bottle must not have residual liquid or labels.

2. Keep safety distance and wear gloves when working with glass.

3. Only suitable for bottles with diameter between 0.5”-2”. If diameter of the bottle is beyond 2”, suggest to use our upgraded 2.1 version

TOO WET

If the clay is too wet, the carved pieces will stick to the pot as you try to remove them, and you won't get a clean finish.

TOO WET

You'll also risk warping your pot as it won't be stable enough to handle at this stage.

TOO DRY

If the clay is too dry, the tool will scratch into the clay rather than cut into it. You'll have to apply so much pressure that you'll risk cracking or warping your pot.

JUST RIGHT

When you get your clay in just the right leather-hard state, the tool cuts through the clay smoothly and the carved pieces come away easily.

FLUTING

Use a loop tool to cut ribbons of clay down the length of a pot. You can get a variety of effects depending on the size and shape of your chosen tool. Project: Fluted Stem Vase, pages 60–65.

CREATING TEXTURE

There are lots of options to create surface interest and detail with a variety of loop tools. Work freehand and let your imagination loose. Projects: Textured Bowl, pages 38–43 and Contrast-Carved Planter, pages 54–59.

GIVING SHAPE TO A FORM

I use this technique on wheel-thrown pieces to carve sharp angles out of a solid piece of clay. Project: Angle-Carved Candlestick, pages 102–105.

FETTLING

Trim the edges of a piece with a knife, in this case trimming the edges of a curve to create a multi-faceted shape. Project: Fettled Hanging Planter, pages 96–101.

Faceted Jug This

This has got to be one of the most satisfying carving techniques; the feeling of slicing through the clay and even the sound as it draws through the pot! As always, to get a great finish you need your clay to be in just the right state; try and catch it when it’s on the soft side of leather-hard. When you draw your tool through the clay to cut your facets, it should glide smoothly and cut a sharp line.

Inlayed Storage Jar

Inlay—or Mishima—is the technique of applying slip into a pattern that has been carved into leather-hard clay. The result is a design that sits flush with the pot giving a very smooth finish.
