12 best beginner banjos
Beginner banjos are ideal for those who are new to playing this unique stringed instrument. Here's what you need to know about them:
Construction: Beginner banjos are typically constructed with affordability in mind, often using less expensive materials and simpler designs. They usually have a closed-back resonator, although open-back models are also available. The resonator enhances the banjo's volume and projection.
Number of Strings: Banjos come in various configurations, but for beginners, a 5-string banjo is most common. The 5-string banjo has four main strings that are plucked with fingers or picks and a shorter fifth string that's typically played with the thumb.
Tuning: The most common tuning for a 5-string banjo is known as G tuning, which is (from highest to lowest pitch) gDGBD. This tuning is popular for bluegrass and traditional banjo music.
Neck and Fretboard: Beginner banjos often have necks made of less expensive wood, such as mahogany or maple. The fretboards are typically made of rosewood or another affordable wood. Fret markers (inlays) are usually found on the fretboard to help players find their way around the neck.
Resonator vs. Open-Back: As mentioned earlier, beginner banjos can have a closed-back resonator or an open-back design. Closed-back banjos are louder and have a brighter sound, making them suitable for bluegrass and country music. Open-back banjos produce a softer, mellower tone and are favored for folk and clawhammer styles.
Price Range: Beginner banjos are available in a wide price range, from very affordable models to mid-range options. It's essential to find a balance between your budget and the features you need.
Accessories: When purchasing a beginner banjo, consider what accessories are included. Some kits may come with a gig bag or case, picks, a strap, and an instructional book or DVD to help you get started.
Brand and Reputation: Research different banjo brands and models to find one with a good reputation for quality and playability. Some reputable banjo makers include Deering, Epiphone, and Recording King.
Setup and Action: A well-set-up banjo is crucial for ease of play. Ensure that the banjo you choose has comfortable string action (the distance between the strings and the fretboard) and that the tuning pegs work smoothly.
Playing Style: Consider your preferred playing style. If you're interested in bluegrass, a resonator banjo may be a better choice. If you're more into folk or old-time music, an open-back banjo might be more suitable.
Beginner banjos are a great way to get started with this unique and versatile instrument. As you gain experience and improve your skills, you can explore higher-end banjos with more intricate features and materials. Happy picking!

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the tuner work for all string instruments |
Answer: | Unfortunately no, I only have the deck designed for 6 string guitars. |
Question: | How would you tune the smaller size banjo, also size wise would you say concert or tenor ukulele |
Answer: | Hi Jay - There isn't currently a deck designed specifically for bass guitars at the moment. This deck however can still be very useful to a bass player. For example all of the note cards, interval cards, key cards and theory cards will still apply. The only cards that might not apply well are the chord cards and the scale cards because it might be tricky for a bass player to visualize removing the last 2 strings. I hope that helps. |
Question: | Is there a left hand version available |
Answer: | Hey! This deck is intended for both left handed and right handed players, charts are written the same regardless of what your primary hand is. |
Question: | Can someone tell me why they suggest tuning to open c as opposed to open g |
Answer: | Can you please send me an email at [email protected] and I'll send you a copy of the pdf. |

Question: | I'd like the same thing (mini at this price) in an open-back. Do you have that |
Answer: | Open C (cGCEG) is ideal. But you can also tune up to open D (dADF#A). Use the chord shapes for typical open G tuning. One way to tune to open G is to tune it to dGBDG and use the chord "shapes" for open D tuning. It works great but you will be in G. Think of this "mini banjo" as a banjo with a capo on the 5th fret. There are a number of other tunings that need to be transposed like modal and minors but I use these C,D and G tunings the most. If you attempt to tune the strings on the mini banjo UP to open G they will break. And if you try to tune down to open G the bridge will move around and the strings are too loose and floppy. I've gone down as low as open A but it sounds terrible and the bridge seems to slide around. You can change to a heavier gauge of strings and tune to G but I've never done it. |
Question: | Does it come pre-strung |
Answer: | Vangoa is on planning to build a left-hand version, but it is not yet launched to the market, you could follow us for more product information. |
Question: | Just wondering does the mini have a traditional banjo sound or is it higher or different than a normal banjo never played before looking at your set t |
Answer: | There are a lot of tunes played on a banjo , that sound better in other tunings. My favorite is Gmodal or sawmill tuning. |

Product description
While it isn't known who first conceived the idea of a banjo ukulele, but we all know The banjo-ukulele is a four-stringed musical instrument with a small banjo-type body and a fretted ukulele neck,a mix between a Ukulele and a Banjo.
The instrument achieved its greatest popularity in the 1920s and 1930s, and combines the small scale, tuning, and playing style of a ukulele with the construction and distinctive tone of a banjo, hence the name. Its development was pushed by the need for vaudeville performers to have an instrument that could be played with the ease of the ukulele, but with more volume, designed it for those ukulele players who want more of that sweet ukulele tone blended with the pop and snap of the banjo.
Tightening or loosening the drum head, through adjusting the tension hooks fitted around the outside of the drum results in a change in tone.
The head typically has a firm tension. Tightening it so that it is rock hard to the touch gives a bright sound with good note distinction, but less bass response. Loosening it so it is softer, yet still tight enough to keep the bridge in place with the tension of the strings, results in a warmer, less bright sound. The bridge floats on the head and is held in place by the tension of the strings.v Back and Side:Sapele

User questions & answers
Question: | The durm is a really Remo drum |
Answer: | Not sure that's the right email address. Check again for a different re nt one on the website. |
Question: | What's the tuning of this banjo ukulele |
Answer: | I guess you could but you'd have to use different string Just rearranging them will not work. |
Question: | What size is the body / drum head |
Answer: | It's about 2 1/2 to 3 pounds (American) no more though. It comes with a strap if you get the right package. (And it looks like in the description above you're ordering the same one I did.) I'd reccomend using it. It gets a little uncomfortable squeezing it to your belly with you forearm like you would a normal uke. All in all I love it and my kids think it sounds neat. And it can be loud if you want it to. I have a tenor uke and it's a bit lighter and quieter. Both awesome. If you get it you wont regret it. Have fun! |
Question: | Can this be used left handed |
Answer: | For the price compaired to what you would pay separately for the items, it is a good deal. Another item, just to think about. I think you would be better advised to buy a soprano uke. It is made for children's hands and the wood body is sturdier than a banjolele with a drum and floating bridge. This is a concert size instrument made for adult hands. A 7 year old will not have the length in his fingers to reach chords on the top 3 frets. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What are dimensions of the actual instrument? It says 37.5" long. How wide is the head and how thick is the instrument? I want to buy a case for it |
Answer: | Buy a strap with clips. The banjo will either already have clips for attaching strap or u clip onto front and rear brackets holding the head. |
Question: | Is this instrument of good enough quality for a trained guitar player or just a good starter banjo |
Answer: | Sorry. I can not tell you that but the one thing I can say is that it’s a very beautiful, well made, sound, look, everything about this bango you would be happy with |
Question: | How does the strap connect to the banjo |
Answer: | 5th string will be on the other side. But, in my opinion, since both hands require equal dexterity in fingering, best to get a standard banjo for maximum selection and resale value later on. |
Question: | Is this for left handed or right handed people |
Answer: | Yes, it has a resonator board on the back, though if you want it to be quiet like me, you can remove it pretty easily. |
