12 best analog synthesizers
Analog synthesizers are the darlings of the music world, bringing a rich, warm sound that's hard to replicate. Unlike their digital counterparts, which use computerized algorithms to generate sound, analog synthesizers rely on electrical voltage to create and shape tones.
These instruments became iconic in the realm of electronic music, with pioneers like Bob Moog and Don Buchla paving the way. The basic components of an analog synth include oscillators, filters, amplifiers, and modulators. Oscillators generate the raw sound, filters shape its timbre, amplifiers control volume, and modulators add dynamic elements like vibrato or tremolo.
The hands-on nature of analog synths allows musicians to sculpt sounds in real-time.Twisting knobs, sliding faders, and patching cables create a tactile and immediate connection between the artist and the music. Each analog synth has its unique sonic fingerprint, contributing to the diverse landscape of electronic and experimental music.
Vintage analog synths from the '70s and '80s are highly sought after, prized for their character and quirks. However, modern manufacturers continue to produce analog synthesizers, combining the classic warmth with contemporary features.
Books on analog synthesis delve into the technical aspects, history, and creative applications of these instruments. So, whether you're a seasoned electronic musician or a curious novice, exploring the world of analog synthesizers is a journey into a realm where sound becomes a sculpted, living art form.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I connect this to a full sized keyboard and essentially run all the sounds through the synth and play them on the full sized keyboard |
Answer: | It doesn't come with the stylus. I'm sure you could use a pen or stylus, but I like just using my fingers so I can hit two notes at the same time. |
Question: | Good for beginners? Does it have a sequencer and does it record |
Answer: | Well if what you're hoping for is a dual oscilator monosynth with a delay effect, you're pretty much not going to find anything close bellow a couple hundred bucks. You can find a used microKorg, which is digital and has four voice polyphony, and has effects including delay, for a wee bit over two hundred. And if you want analog with a built in delay, I can't think of one. A cheap Behringer delay pedal might work for you though. |
Question: | also what are those little yellow cords and do they come with the product |
Answer: | If you have a Behringer mixer, you would have to hook this up to your mixer via an analog input- that is, either a channel strip using line-in or a stereo/mono input, or 2-track RCA input. If you have the Behringer Q302usb mixer, you can chain the Main Outs (red and white RCA jacks) to the monotron by running an RCA to 3.5 mm stereo cable or adapter from the Monotron, then run the headphone out of the monotron back to another RCA input on that same mixer with an identical cable, or to another mixers RCA 2-track in. If you have a different Behringer mixer that has 1/4" jacks, you'll need a cable to go from the Monotron to a 1/4" jack. Basically you're going to need a cable or adapter to go from the Monotron's 3.5 mm headphone out stereo jack to either another 3.5 mm jack, 1/4" jack, or RCA jacks. |
Question: | Ok, can I just plug in my 88 key midi controller and pretend that little toy keyboard doesn't exist |
Answer: | Search for "Korg Monotron Duo" on YouTube. Here is Korg's official video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilSWwjuRrhw |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the td-3 support usb audio - or just midi data |
Answer: | It won’t record midi data for the knobs |
Question: | Does moving its filter cutoff knob send midi cc messages that can be recorded by a sequencer, received, & played by the td3 when the sequencer plays |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Do you need to connect this to a mac or pc to use it |
Answer: | No - you can run it stand alone. It is a bit finicky and tricky to program patterns without the Behringer (included) sequencer programming tool, but if you're old school it works just like the TB 303 USED TO WORK. Step input, one note pitch and note value at a time. A pc/mac will make this easy - point and click. And then you DUMP what you created to the TD3 for playback. |
Question: | Hello! Does it come with an international power supply? (110v-220v |
Answer: | My TD-3 arrived with a power supply with an interchangeable U.S. plug adapter (100v-240v) so I think you can purchase different plug adapters elsewhere that are compatible with the power supply. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used as a midi controller |
Answer: | Yes you can. It has MIDI IN also MIDI via USB. So you can hook any keyboard with MIDI OUT into it or to use the USB MIDI In, then you would hook both to a computer and play it that way. |
Question: | Does this quantize your input keys when recording |
Answer: | This is analog synthesizer and it doesn't have a sequencer or recorder built in. The purpose is to generate monophonic sounds. You can connect an external sequencer and control the MS20 via MIDI. It is quite bewildering for an absolute beginner. |
Question: | how do i get this to work with Abelton ? do i need a midi interface |
Answer: | you connect the different modules together, often in interesting ways. For example...a sine wave oscillator can be used to make a pure tone, OR you can slow it WAY down and use the patch cord to control an audio filter to make an undulating wah-wah tone. You don't hear the sine wave, you use it to control some other function. This was Moog's original innovation and is used time and time again in modular synthesizers (and in digital ones, but the connection is less obvious when you're just adjusting parameters on a screen). |
Question: | Will this work well with guitar pedals like the strymon timeline? Or would the signal be too hot for the pedal because of the internal amp |
Answer: | Absolutely. It does have one midi in port. I can trigger this synth with any controller that has a midi out including my DAW. |

User questions & answers
Question: | i need a bigger keyboard, Can i use one with the xd |
Answer: | Another current sound the MiniNova can easily do is the screechy feedback resonance. I haven't tried to get this sound on the Korg, but it would be worth a try. |
Question: | Does this come with a gig bag |
Answer: | you will need an interface to record an analog line level signal into a computer. you can hook it up usb from midi with a converter, bit you will only be communicating MIDI signals, not analog sound. That goes for most usb connections between digital keys and OS's. You can control virtual instruments using it as a midi controller but thats not what you buy this for. For example though:you could control the microkorg with another MIDI controller if you want bigger keys, and with a controller with surface control faders /knobs you can assign all functions to those as well. In summary: No it doesnt come with editing software. |
Question: | Are the keys full sized |
Answer: | The XL has more sounds, it also has an LCD display that shows the sound name and parameters making it easier to navigate and program. |
Question: | Would this be a good tool for composing? I play guitar and was thinking about this for composition and playback. How much storage doe it have |
Answer: | 1. Go into Edit mode 2. Use knob 1 to select ARP (arpeggiator) page 3, Use knob 2 to edit step notes and times |

Korg Monotron Duo
Go Anywhere Analog: That was the theme behind the remarkable battery-powered and palm-sized analog synthesizer that Korg dubbed the monotron. Now the powerful and fun-to-play monotron is joined by two new siblings. Each is played from a ribbon controller keyboard with newly added features. The monotron’s simple operation and ease of use (5 knobs and 1 switch) is alive and well, inviting hours of enjoyment and musical exploration. Offering two oscillators, the monotron DUO adds an extra dimension, delivering an even more extreme sound. Tune the oscillators in unison for a rich, thick, analog tone. Tune them in intervals for classic soloing sounds and generating new effects. The X-MOD (cross modulation) circuit taken from Korg's classic Mono/Poly can introduce a mild or razor-sharp edge to the overall sound; everything from a rich vibrato to extreme metallic sounds reminiscent of an FM synth.
The monotron DUO's ribbon controller keyboard now features the familiar Scale function used on the KAOSSILATOR. You can use this button to select one of four scales: Chromatic, Major, Minor, or Off. Choose the Chromatic scale to play precise pitches as on a piano, or choose Major or Minor to generate musically coherent phrases by simply sliding your finger around on the keyboard.

The new Arturia MicroBrute is the next generation of the Brute family of synthesizers. The little brother of the award winning, modern classic: MiniBrute. The MicroBrute is smaller in size but retains the pure analog sound, the famed Steiner-Parker filter as well as Arturia's multiple wave oscillator with wave-shapers. No shortcuts were taken in making sure that the MicroBrute sound stands up to any analog synth on the market. New Features Step sequencer: Arturia has added a new step sequencer for generating patterns. This easy-to-us step sequencer is reminiscent of sequencers found on the Sequential Circuits Pro One as well as the rare and classic Oberheim DS-2a. Updated Sub-oscillator: The new sub-oscillator allows for adding an octave down as well as the ability to mix in a 5th up harmonic. This allows this single oscillator synth to sound like a monster with multiple oscillators. Mod Matrix: The Mod Matrix patchbay allows you to route 3 modulation sources, ENV, LFO and Keyboard CV (on the rear panel) to any of 6 modulation destinations. This semi modular capability allows for many sound-making capabilities. The MicroBrute is the smallest and most powerful analog synth on the market and it promises to set a new standard for analog synth sound and price.

User questions & answers
Question: | is this also a midi controller |
Answer: | no.You can control it by midi but it is not a midi controller. |
Question: | Would you recommend this for a beginner |
Answer: | I would HIGHLY recommend this for some trying to learn synths. Its very basic and straightforward. Its simple to understand and learn on. |
Question: | Can you save sounds in a memory bank? I’m hoping to lock in a bass sound for live use that I can come back to |
Answer: | You can save patterns, but you cannot save sounds. They supply you with a few "sheets" that you can mark what your settings were, but that is a physical marker, not a memory marker. |
Question: | can a guitar be pugged into this |
Answer: | Yes it can. It will be able to be effected by the filter LOF and so on. Will not act as some kinda vocoder or harmonizer. |

Bass Station II. Bass Station II is an analog mono-synth with a talent for bass, but a sound-engine that is versatile enough to kick out sharp leads and crisp arpeggios. It brings the best elements of the original Bass Station into a brand new design with re-worked modulation, effects, filters and more; like the Bass Station, but much much bigger. The signal path is pure analog - including the effects section. The hardware has been laid out in modules with dedicated pots, switches, sliders and buttons for all major parameters. Critically, you can store and recall patches on Bass Station II. It comes with 64 killer factory presets, space for 64 of your own sounds on the hardware, and you can store more on your computer. The key-mechanism consists of 25 full sized keys that are velocity sensitive with assignable aftertouch. It has been developed as a ˜synth-action' keyboard, where each key is individually sprung so it is light to the touch and highly responsive to the synth engine. Bass Station II is a fully class compliant MIDI device with MIDI I/O on 5 pin din ports - for connecting to other MIDI outboard - and can interface with your computer over USB. The Synth Engine: A Brief Overview Oscillators: Bass Station II is built on three analog oscillators and a noise generator. There are two fully independent oscillators plus a sub oscillator (which is the critical component in creating rich, analog bass sounds). Oscillators One and Two are switchable between sine, sawtooth, square and variable pulse width, and Oscillator Three - the sub osc - can be set to one or two octaves below Oscillator One. It can be square, sine or narrow pulse width, delivering the characteristically ˜fat' bass tone. Filters: You can select between two discrete filters - ˜Acid' or ˜Classic' - each with a built in overdrive for pushing filter tones from dry, to warm, to nasty! The ˜Classic' Bass Station filter can be switched between low pass, high pass and band pass at 12 or 24dB slopes. Th...

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the signal be looped out to rack modules and external filter etc |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | How does this compare to the roland jd-xi |
Answer: | More like how it contrasts. The jd-xi is more like a mini keyboard with mic. The Novation Bass Station 2 is more like Moog synthesizer with fat keys and smooth sound. Added onto this 2nd edition is a 303 instrument you play live instead of program. totally different beasts. |
Question: | Hello. I'm not really sure of discription- but can I play chords sound on it or single note only? Thanks |
Answer: | Hello, it's a monophonic synth meaning it can only play one note at a time. |
Question: | I would be interesting in purchasing if I can verify it can just do plain low full bass. Can it do plain full bass, nothing extreme |
Answer: | That's tough to fully answer because no one can completely know how you really want the words "plain full bass" translated into noises for your ear. That said, this little beast can do whatever the hell you want--plain low full bass included. Buy it because it's stupid cheap for as amazing as it is, turn down every knob in the mixer section except "sub oscillator", select the sine wave, drop it down -2 octave and then feel your bowels quake with plain full bass. There are also some good presets that fit your description too. |
