Answer:	5 considering normal methods. If you only have sticks, twigs, etc. and a match or lighter is a 10 and using two stick to create friction is a 1, then these around 5. This fresnel will quickly blacken paper but you don't get a flame. You have to create an ember and then use skill, angle, the right tinder and lots of patience to get a fire. I compared these to a 4 inch magnifying glass and the glass was twice as good and easier to focus. I was using various combinations of cotton ball, jute fibers, various cardboard, and dry pine needles. I actually got a fire with the magnifying glass, but I never could duplicate with this fresnel. Note that the 4 inch magnifying glass has 12.6 in2 and these have about 4.8 in2 and the magnifying glass focuses much better. The image quality on these is marginal compared to other larger ones I have, but these do work as a pocket magnifier for reading.

Answer:	YES ! ! ! BUT NOTE: It will do practically nothing to a white piece of paper . . . but make a black spot with charcoal or a black marker and it will burn a hole in 1 second. But there is techique to starting a fire rather than just making smoking charcoal holes. Make several layers, if using paper, and have a black spot or image on it. Focus the sun to the smallest dot. Bright clear sun will burn a hole in 1 second - - - expand the hole going upward in ever increasing arc (heat travels up). Once you get a red hot coal, blow to make it increase, then stick the paper into another envelope made of folded paper - this concentrates heat - and blow into that. If you are lucky a peice of rolled up newspaper will just burst into flame in 30 seconds BUT you'd better practice with different material and conditions.
