Answer:	Pillows are great for it and I can't think of what else could be used. I was able to purchase polyester pillows at a reasonable price.

Answer:	Won't use it for a newborn, it is quite soft and the waterproof liner makes quite a bit of rustling noise when the baby turns. Good for a toddler though.
