Not sure if tearing was hardwood related or due to mopping. But its definitely worth a shot! I used it in my new home on stairs and walkways in rooms while moving. Loved it so much, I left it down for 1-2 months to protect light color carpet from my husband’s boots and son. I would think you could use it on other carpet during the training process to prevent future odors
